Shire of Lake Grace Local Government Inventory request was made in 1946, suggesting Dingo Rock, South Lake Grace, Newdegate, and the lakes district for possible key water supply sites. At a ratepayers meeting in March 1946, it was resolved that the secretary request the Water Authority to prepare plans to be submitted for action prior to summer 1947, including the Dingo Rocks catchment. In April 1946, the Water Authority advised that the expansion of the district’s water supplies was in abeyance due to shortage of manpower and materials. By 1947, the town’s doctor, Dr Margaret Clarke made a formal complaint about the water supply in Lake Grace. A special meeting was called in July 1947, attended by Mr Doney the Minister for Public Works and Labour, and Mr Nalder, the MLA for the district. The Chairman of the Road Board, Mr Elliott, presided. The subject under discussion was the water supply, and among the recommendations was the issue of Dingo Rocks which could provide a water supply for the local settlers who needed to cart water long distances. Elliott strongly recommended a further inspection of Dingo Rock in view of the excellent catchment potential. In November 1947, the Beenong area was dependent on the water in the railway tank. In correspondence from PWD to the Roads Board in February 1950, it was stated that Dingo Rocks was marked for attention. When Mr Elliott was re-elected as Chairperson of the Board for the 16th consecutive term, in May 1950, he reported that works were progressing at Dingo Rocks. The prisoners from Fremantle Jail constructed the 7 metre rock and cement wall to catch the run-off from Dingo Rock. All the work was done by hand with picks, shovels and blasting. The prisoners camped at the site and the work was supervised by the Public Works Department. The Dingo Rock Dam was opened on 23 July 1952 by Victor Doney MLA. It was vested in the Water Authority in 1969. (Gazette 7 February 1969) It is still in use. SLG # 2 CATEGORY 1 LOT/PLAN DIAGRAM LOCATION Winchcombe Rd, Lake Gulson, 11 miles

west of Varley

OTHER NAME(S) CONSTRUCTION DATE(S) c1940-c1950 STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The entire farm is representative of the 35oo Scheme development. The various built places are of considerable significance in representing the development of the property. The mallee root shed and fences demonstrates the innovative use of local materials in construction. The POW hut represents the presence of war and foreign labour on the farms. The dwelling is representative of a period of development. The place demonstrates associations with a pioneer of the district, war time and the occupation of the land. The mallee root shed and fences are rare if not the only example of their type. The POW hut similarly is a rare surviving example of its type. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION Machinery Shed – The walls are constructed of mallee roots and have a thickness of approximately 0.6 metres. The roof structure is a sapling structure, connected by wire ties, and with a bush thatch roof.

Page 11: Shire of Lake Grace · 2014. 5. 12. · Shire of Lake Grace x Local Government Inventory Shire of Lake Grace Contents ... gable with break pitch verandahs. Some of the verandahs have

Shire of Lake Grace Local Government Inventory Mall root fences – The fences are approximately 1 metre high, and constructed by mallee roots and have a thickness of approximately 0.6 metres. Farm dwelling – The timber framed and fibro clad cottage has verandahs surrounding the original four rooms. The corrugated iron roof is a high pitched gable with break pitch verandahs. Some of the verandahs have been enclosed. POW hut – The one room sapling structure is clad with vertical sheets of corrugated iron. The chimney is made from flattened kerosene tins. The window is from an abandoned vehicle. HISTORY Henry Millington took up his land in 1929 and settled on his virgin property in January 1930 as part of the 3500 Scheme. There were no properly formed roads, railway or services in the area. The first few acres were cleared by him with an axe and a saw. He was then granted some funds to enable him to employ some help to clear the remainder of his land. A Hessian and corrugated iron dwelling was the first home on the property which was added to over the years and was home to his family until 1950. During the 1940s Italian Prisoners of War were allocated throughout the district to assist the farmers. The POW on Millington’s farm lived in the hut that is still in evidence. Henry Millington was active in the Volunteer Defence Forces in Varley. The mallee root shed was constructed during the war years when a machinery shed was required, but no funds were available, and material were in short supply anyway. Innovation and resourcefulness is the saviour of the man on the land, and Henry Millington was very innovative in constructing his machinery shed from the readily available material on the farm. All the mallee roots were picked by hand from the farm property. After World War Two the economical situation began to improve, and in 1950 a new dwelling was constructed on the property. The family continued to farm the property until March 1996 when Henry Millington’s son retired. Shire of Lake Grace Local Government Inventory Garard’s thatched house SLG # 4 CATEGORY 2 LOT/PLAN DIAGRAM LOCATION North Burngup OTHER NAME(S) 1945 house; North Burngup Phone

exchange CONSTRUCTION DATE(S) STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The thatched place demonstrates a way of life no longer practised. It represents significant associations with the depression period of Western Australian history, and the settlement of the North Burngup region. The later place represents associations with the telephone communication system in the area, and is typical of post war development in the Wheatbelt. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION Thatched bush timber dwelling – Bush timber structure constructed without the use of nails or wire. The structure is thatched with tee tree on the walls and roof, and an interior lining was made of “cresco” super bags with an initial “white wash” consisting of a mixture of sour milk and “super”. It was later painted with kalsomine. The tee tree roof thatch was 5 feet thick (very cool) and on a steep gable. The floor was crushed ant nests. The structure is still discernible although the walls and roof are falling in. Existing dwelling – The place has surrounding verandahs at a break pitch. The corrugated iron roof is high pitched in a gambrel style. The cement bricks were hand made one at a time with a brick mould. HISTORY The property had previously been occupied by an old soldier from Narrogin before the Garards took over the property. Robinson, the old soldier, pegged an opal mine in the district, before he walked off the property during the Great Depression, and was later a flower seller in Perth city. When the Garards arrived at the property a 22 rifle was resting on the gate post. The Garards settled in North Burngup in c1933. They established their farm dwelling in close proximity to the North Burngup Government Dam. This dwelling was built during the Great Depression, at about the same time that the sustenance workers were cleaning the dam. The land was virgin country, and it is a testimony to the strength and determination of the settlers of the period to survive the depression, clear their land and construct a dwelling. The Garard family lived in the thatched dwelling until 1945 when a new home was constructed in close proximity. After hand building this place, they moved in on VE day, 15 September 1945. This place represents the first permanent home on the land. It is typical of the period. The phone exchange was a vital communication which was often located in farm houses and operated by the woman in the house.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION Timber framed and clad with fibro cement with a weatherboard dado. The corrugated iron roof is hipped with a skillion extension at the eastern end. HISTORY In 1927 the North Burngup School was established. It operated for 11 years until it was closed in 1938. The advent of the railway line in 1931-32 had resulted in a community focus at the Pingaring Siding, and after the closure of the North Burngup School, there was some concern in Pingaring with regard to locating the school on the western side of the railway line. Parents were alarmed at the danger of the children being run over by the weekly train through Pingaring. The school was subsequently relocated from North Burngup to the elevated existing site of the Pingaring School. The Pingaring townsite was condemned by the government authorities because it was too low lying, and they would not allow a government building to be located in that vicinity. The school opened on 31 January 1939, with Miss Mavis Harris as the teacher. By 1954, the school’s student’s numbers had increased, and the Education Department provided a new building, and teacher accommodation. The school re-opened on 12 February 1954 with 22 students. It was officially opened by the district inspector on the 29 April 1954. The former school building was relocated to the sports ground in close proximity to the existing school. A fifty year celebration in 1977 commemorated the site of the original North Burngup School. The school closed in 199 ORIGINAL USE School CURRENT USE HISTORIC THEME

The club house represents the development of the facilities and the club. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION Brick construction HISTORY When it was obvious that the railway line was coming through to Newdegate, a permanent townsite was surveyed (this site) which was closer to the proposed site of the Railway terminus. On 21 June 1926 the existing Newdegate and Lake Biddy townsite blocks were auctioned, and this site was eventually abandoned. In 1927, a stone with traces of tin was found on this site. Prospectors and towns people were optimistic about the possibilities of a tin deposit, and a company was formed. The hotel manager at the time, Mr Hospens, had the sample analysed and it was found to contain no tin. The company was subsequently wound up. The Golf Club first formed in 1933 with 2 holes. With 9 holes in place around the original townsite, the original hall served as the clubhouse. By the time there were 12 holes, a clubhouse had been located on the site. The former South Newdegate School building which became the Clubhouse, later burnt down. The existing clubhouse was built in 1966, and the Bowling club amalgamated in 1968. While the majority of the Wheatbelt in Western Australia was serviced by rail, and the introduction of bulk handling in 1932, the Lake King region was not provided with either of those facilities. In 1938 settlers were still having to deliver their bagged grain to the Newdegate Railway Station. It represents a way of life no longer practised in Lake Grace. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION Site with a brick construction. HISTORY Lot 2 was the first lot purchased in the Lake Grace townsite, and Hurtle Bairstow established a store. It was the site of social gatherings. At a meeting on 14 October 1917, it was decided on form a Co-operative by the name of The Lake Grace and District Co-operative Company Limited. Hurtle Bairstow was appointed as manager on the basis that he receive 75% of the profits of the company. The Co-op initially operated from his store. By the end of 1918 a hall with a Co-op office had been constructed, which was subsequently converted into the Co-op Store in 1922. From 1922 – 1929, Faram was the manager of the Co-op. In 1938, celebrations in Lake Grace marked the 21st anniversary of the Co-op, and a tribute was made to Charlie Aldridge, the manager at the time. A record crowd for Lake Grace, assembled for the Concert, supper and dance that evening. The Co-op developed and was extended three times before it was destroyed by fire on 30 March 1979. The Co-op traded from Slarke’s shop until this premises was completed. The new supermarket and mall with specialty shops was opened by the Premier Sir Charles Court on 3 May 1980. Named the “Lakeway”, the $500,000 rebuild and $200,000 fitout was a considerable investment. By 1981, the Co-op was in severe financial difficulties and at a shareholders meeting, a property trust was formed. Bernborough Pty Ltd purchased the building and the Co-op leased it back with a manager, until 1989 when it was sold to M & J Stanton, who moved their newsagent and drapery store (from the shops on the corner of Bennett and McMahon Streets), into the supermarket. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION HISTORY The dam was originally established to provide water for the settlers and travellers in the district. A soak above the dam is the site of the first camp of Bennett, McMahon and Absolon, the first settlers to cross the lake in a vehicle. The dam provided the only water supply and the water was always white due to the pipe clay. Later Bennett built a second dam at the site. It subsequently was where the mail contractor camped overnight on Wednesdays. The settlers would pick up the mail from that point, and distribute mail to the more outlying settlers; Carruthers distributed a lot of the mail. The mail drop was an eagerly awaited social event. The White Dam site developed into the social centre of the district, with the 1st annual PGA (Progress Association) picnic at the dam in 1912. Politicians addressed the gathering, and sports were held for the young people. Lake Grace pony cup race. The PGA were lobbyists for the railway line. The race course extended from the existing golf course gate to White Dam. In 1913, the settlers lobbied for a water condenser to secure a water supply. After a thunderstorm providing plentiful water, the settlers advised they no longer required the condenser, but it was on the rail, and was subsequently installed before the 1914 drought. Shire of Lake Grace Local Government Inventory ‘Ormidale’ and Harvey’s Lake SLG # 45 CATEGORY 5 LOT/PLAN DIAGRAM LOCATION Lake Grace OTHER NAME(S) CONSTRUCTION DATE(S) c1920s STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The sites represent ways of life no longer practised and associations with the Harvey family who were early settlers of the district. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION HISTORY Jack and Lila Harvey owned the first sheep in the district. Harvey’s first sheep stud was in Cartmeticup, where he transported his sheep from in 1920, by train. In the first year every lamb was taken by dingoes. In 1920, the house was removed from a site in Cartmeticup by horse drawn wagon in pieces and reconstructed on Harvey’s farm, ‘Ormidale’. Heavy rains in the 1920s filled up the lakes, and created a river, dividing Jack Harvey’s property. On the west sideof one of the lakes was a shady spot with tea trees and sheoaks which became a popular spot for picnics, and was know as Harvey’s Lake. A stile was built over the fence for easy access from the road. Jack Wilson took out some heavy timber, and constructed a diving board and platform 100 metres from the lake shore, where it was reputed that the water was up to 10 feet deep. Men and boys built corrugated iron canoes with wooden seats, and Les Tetley built a wooden boat with a canopy across the top for the ladies to paddle on the lake in. people enjoyed picnics and swimming. The lake was used every weekend, after church everyone would travel out in their horse and cart, tie the horse in a shady spot, climb the fence, and the men and women would go in separate directions to get changed in the bush. During the centenary celebrations in 1929, the Lake Grace School enjoyed a picnic and race day at the lake, and money from the Government was distributed to the children to commemorate the centenary. By the late 1930s and early 1940s a thick weed grew in the lake and spoiled the swimming. The Harvey family lived at ‘Ormidale’ until 1946. Hugh McCallum from the Agriculture Department held demonstrations at Harvey’s stud. In 1952 the house was once again relocated, this time to Lake Grace townsite in Bennett Street. Shire of Lake Grace Local Government Inventory Griffin’s Reward SLG # 46 CATEGORY 5 LOT/PLAN DIAGRAM LOCATION Lake Grace OTHER NAME(S) Griffin’s Find Yamboyna Farm CONSTRUCTION DATE(S) 1957 STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The site represents associations with the discovery of gold in the wheatbelt. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION HISTORY Charles Griffin Senior took up a war service property in 1919 in Lake Grace. In the 1930s and 1940s, his son Charles jnr worked as a miner in Kalgoorlie. In 1941, Charles snr joined his son in Kalgoorlie. When Charles jnr visited his father’s Lake Grace farm in 1957, he recognised similarities in the mafic granulites outcropping on the farm, to those in the Kalgoorlie region. Many years previously, Paddy Hammell had worked the O’Donnell block, and had a stone assayed, revealing a gold content. Charles jnr began panning on the O’Donnell block, and on the ‘back block’ of his brother Tom’s farm. The creek in front of the homestead revealed the first gold traces. In 1957, Charles Griffin applied to the Mines Department for gold mining rights and requested that a government geologist survey the area. The response to Griffin was negative. Charles and a friend, James Lawless, sank a 30 feet deep shaft with drives north and south. The Griffin far and son formed a partnership with Lawless. Clement Treloar located gold on O’Neill’s adjoining property, and O’Neill formed a partnership with John Fitton. In 1958, Griffins and Lawless had 19 ton of ore treated at the Marvel Loch State Battery, returning ½ oz fine gold to the ton. Later that year, gold bearing quartz was discovered on the ‘back block’ and a shaft was sunk, revealing gold, but needing deep mining. In 1962, the mining company Lake View and Starr became interesting in the property and in 1963, took an option over ‘Griffin’s Find’. They drilled four diamond drill holes in the vicinity of Giffin’s first discovery but failed to find the ore boady. After initial planning to proceed with full scall mining, a week later they pulled out of the site, only a week prior to the crash in gold prices. In the 1960s Leo Bowron located gold 700 metres north west of Griffin’s original discovery, and sank two shafts. The Lake Grace Shire trucked the ore to the railway where it was loaded onto special ore trucks. In 1968, the Griffins sold the property. The mine was subsequently fully developed with Seltrust undertaking a full gold drilling program in 1979. It no longer operates. ORIGINAL USE farm/gold mine CURRENT USE farm

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION HISTORY The season of 1925/1926 was the first for the ‘Norths’ cricket club. Matches were played on the dried out salt lake at this site which was on Jack Madrell’s property, near the North Lake Grace School. The pitch was actually a road used by the soldier settlers to the north. As the game became more popular, it also became more organised, and a more permanent venue was established. All clubs had to establish a cement pitch for the 1926/1927 season to remain a member of the Association. A ground was cleared on the catchment of James’ Dam, opposite Charles Robinson’s farm. The pitch was relocated to the defunct Beenong Ground in 1950/1951 where they played until 1959/1960. It has an association with the early settlers. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION HISTORY The area north east of Lake Grace was first settled in 1919. No school was available for the children, so the children’s education took place in the lounge of AB Thompson’s new dwelling in 1923. In 1924, the recently vacated former school room from Lake Grace was relocated to a paddock on WD Boulton’s farm. Boulton’s farm was the centre of the district, and no child had to travel more than 8 miles. The children usually travelled by horse and cart, subsidised by the Government at sixpence per child. The students originally comprised of 2 Thompsons, 3 Merediths and 3 Duckworths. In 1927 the school students and teachers enjoyed a day’s outing to White Cliffs. In July 1937, the name was change from North East Lake Grace School to Beenong School. In 1940, the school closed due to low attendance. It was an Education Department requirement that a minimum number of 8 children was needed to retain a school teacher and keep a school open. Often the small country schools opened and closed a number of times depending on that requirement. When the school closed, the Beenong branch of the Farmer’s Union Progress tried to retain the school building as a meeting place. However they were unsuccessful and the Lake Biddy branch of the Farmer’s Union bought the school room in 1942. They dismantled it and re-erected it to provide a school at Buniche. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION HISTORY In 1929, after it was decided to build a rifle range, a grant of £90 was received from the Commonwealth Government. It contributed towards the total £140 cost of establishing the range. The property was leased from the Department of the Army and was one of only eight Commonwealth Rifle Ranges in Western Australia. It opened on 31 August 1929. During World War Two, the Voluntary Defence Corps joined with the rifle club and used the rifle range. It represents the settlers value of an education for their children, and has associations with the early settlers of the South Lake Grace area. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION The building was timber framed with a timber floor and a corrugated iron roof. It was unlined on the inside. 18’ x 12’ corrugated iron cladding on the walls. A fireplace. HISTORY In 1925, the settlers in the South Lake Grace area formed a school committee and applied to the Education Department for a school. The request was denied, and it was suggested that the farmers build a school on private land. Consequently on 12 July 1926, a school was built on John Lay’s property. It was painted red, and was mostly referred to as the “little red school”. It was opened on 7 September 1926 with the teacher, Olive Flannigan, paid by the school committee. When Mrs Peacock, the teacher, and her tow children lived there, a rug separated the school from their accommodation, until the parents later enclosed part of the verandah as a bedroom. In June 1927, the school closed due to not enough children attending. It was an Education Department requirement that a minimum number of 8 children was needed to retain a school teacher and keep a school open. Oftern the small coutry school opened and closed a number of times depending on that requirement. In 1931, the school reopened with government assistance, and in May 1934, it officially became a Government School. The school was the venue for much of the social activity for the settlers in the South Lake Grace area. Christmas trees and dances were popular, and Parson Stansfield held church services in the school. In 1947, Irene Hooper (nee Lay) was the last teacher at the school, formerly having been a pupil. The school finally closed in 1947 when the school bus service transported all the children into Lake Grace School. In 1980, strong winds blew the little school down. The site represents a way of life no longer practised. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION HISTORY As early as 1915, the Narrogin to Kondinin line passed through Kulin and ended at the Kondinin railhead. From 1913, Stileman was Chief Engineer of the WAGR, and his plan proposed the extension of the trunk line eastwards from Corrigin through to Forrestania which was planned for expansion under the Empire Immigration Scheme, sharing costs. In 1926 the Wagin line extended eastwards to a railhead at Lake Grace. Considerable lobbying from the Karlgarin community vied for an extension of the Corrigin line as outlined in the Stileman Plan. The Railway Advisory Board finally proposed a spur line from Lake Grace to Karlgarin, and onwards to Hyden at the head of the line. By 1927 fierce discussions were taking place. The motion to construct the trunk line east from Kondinin was put before Parliament in 1928. The Stileman Plan, the line east from Kondinin was subsequently defeated. As late as 1929 surveys were continuing for the Kondinin extension, and late in 1929 the Karlgarin town was surveyed, but in June 1930 the railway gangs commenced construction at the Lake Grace end of the spur line to Karlgarin and Hyden, with Waddercarrin (Mordetta) a siding along that line. The railway line did not come to Mordetta Siding until 1931, and the trains first ran between Lake Grace and Karlgarin in 1932. When the siding was opened in April 1933, it changed from No. 2 siding to Waddercarrin. In 1960, the name was changed from Waddercarrin because there was a railway siding of a similar name near Dowerin, and it created confusion. The name Mordetta was a combination of two local farm names: Ross Willcox’s Mordiallok and Alex Dixon’s Wangetta. In 1945 two fettler’s dwellings were provided for accommodation for the fettlers and their families. The fettlers worked along the railway line maintaining the facility. The goods shed received all incoming and outgoing goods. The loading ramp was important for the loading and unloading of stock at the site.

The passenger train service ended in the early 1950s when the railway bus took over. Local farmers carted their grain to the siding. The grain was in bags sewn at the top and loaded into closed wagons for cartage to Fremantle. The railway line was closed on the 30 June 1957, however on the 15 January 1960 the line was reinstated for a trial between Hyden and Lake Grace. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION A stone and plaque commemorate the site. HISTORY IN April 1926 a North Burngup School opened with only 6 of the promised 12 students. When the school opened on March 28 1927, there still were only 7 students. The school building was located at this site after having been located at this site after having been relocated from a Group Settlement area. The North Burngup settlement diminished when the railway siding was established in the vicinity of Pingaring Rock, and a town subsequently focussed around the railway siding from the mid 1930s. On 2 August 1934, the name of the school was changed to Pingaring School. By 1938, the North Burngup School closed and was relocated to the vicinity of Pingaring Siding, a more central position in the district. The school reopened on 31 January 1939 and the building served until a new school building was completed in 1954. The building was later relocated to its present site, a short distance from the Pingaring School, at the Pingaring Sports & Recreation Ground. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION The hall was a timber framed and corrugated iron clad structure measuring 35’ x 40’ and cost £200. The tongue and groove floor boards were of a high standard for dancing. HISTORY After the establishment of the dam in the early 1920s, by 1928 the community at North Burngup was such that a hall was constructed to provide for a community venue. Many memorable events took place at the hall; the annual Christmas Tree party, 50th wedding anniversary, wedding breakfasts, birthday celebrations, send-offs and welcome-homes for the World War Two personal and Junior Farmer meetings. Margaret Fisher’s 21st birthday. Dances were a regular social event with the local children polishing the floor on Saturday morning with Shellite and sawdust. Jack Wilson and Vince Lucas ran pictures shows for a few years. Three anthill tennis courts adjoined the hall, and were the venue for regular matches with visiting clubs. Soccer was popular in the district in the early days, and the ground was established about 200 metres east of the hall. Later cricket became very popular and the cricket pitch was incorporated in the soccer ground. The salmon gum logs under the shade of salmon gum trees on the oval boundary was a popular spectator position. Bough sheds provided shelter and a venue for afternoon tea. In 1932, the railway line from Lake Grace to Karlgarin and Hyden opened through the North Burngup district. The railway line passed some 5 miles to the west of the North Burngup settlement, due in part to the availability of water at Pingaring Rock. The North Burngup settlement diminished after Pingaring Siding was established and a town subsequently focused around the railway siding from the mid 1930s.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION HISTORY After World War One, the settlement of the Newdegate area was discussed by Narrogin farmers and it was suggested that the district be developed into 5000 acre grazing properties. Some Lake Grace farmers argued that the land was more suitable for wheat and put a case to the State Premier. In 1922 the land was surveyed and as part of an unemployment program for the government, sustenance workers were despatched to the area to be employed to clear the land for prospective settlers. 300 acres of each surveyed block was cleared to give the settlers a beginning. In the region of 400 workers came to the area, many of them were European. The clearers travelled to Lake Grace by train, and then proceeded on foot or by horse and cart. They camped on the jobs but food and water supplies were obtained form the main camp at this location. The clearing was subsequently fount to be of a poor quality and a considerable expense to the government, but the farmers had good crops the following year. Lake Biddy was later the rail depot for those areas bringing their wheat along the track for rail transport. Lake Biddy was the only town built on the Holland’s Track. In 1988, a Bicentennial event was “Walking the Holland’s”, commencing at Lake Biddy, the walk proceeded south to Sheoak Hill, and onto Silver Wattle Hill where a plaque was laid. In 1993, a celebration to commemorate the centenary of the trace was organised by the Newdegate Primary School, and they re-enacted a walk of a segment of the track. The track passes through 12 farms in the Lake Biddy district. It was only 10kms from the Lake Biddy Store, and in the 20s and 30s, the track was the shortest route to Newdegate and Lake Grace. It was never a road, just a meandering track, so when roads were built it wasn’t used. Although it was a popular short cut during World War Two. Shire of Lake Grace Local Government Inventory Lake Biddy Recreation Ground SLG # 74 CATEGORY 5 LOT/PLAN DIAGRAM Reserve 19137 LOCATION Witham Road, Lake Biddy OTHER NAME(S) 42 mile dam CONSTRUCTION DATE(S) STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The site represents a way of life associated with sport and recreational activities of the early settlers in Lake Biddy. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION HISTORY The original cricket club was located on the eastern boundary of Son Lloyd’s property; the “Water Hole” site was an old road which formed the pitch with white anthills. The first match was between Lake Biddy and Lake Grace in 1924/25. In 1926 the Lake Biddy club joined the Lake Grace Cricket Association. At the 42 mile dam on New Years Day 1924, the first picnic and sports meeting of the local settlers was held. At various time the settlers met at Sheoak Hill on the Holland Track or at Stalker’s house, where they had deliberately left a wall out of the house to allow a space for dancing. WM Witham’s, an original settler, farm was directly over the road from the recreation ground. Part of Witham Road was formerly the Holland’s Track, in the straighter sections. In 1927 the first horse events were introduced at the Sports ground, and the athletics and novelty foot events continued to be enjoyed. Volunteers developed the grounds over the years. A strong tennis club developed and three courts were constructed as well as a concrete cricket pitch, adjacent to the sports ground. In about 1960 the date of the annual sports changed from New Years Day to March, to coincide with the South East District Racing Carnival. By the late 1960s the lack of public support and local interest saw the sports ground and events abandoned. ORIGINAL USE CURRENT USE HISTORIC THEME ARCHITECT BUILDER

It represents ways of life no longer practised. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION HISTORY William Robert Tilbrook left Busselton in November 1928 with his three eldest sons and took up land in Mt Madden on the 3500 Scheme. In 1937 the Tilbrooks established the first shearing plant in the district. After World War Two, in the 1950s, they started a Peppin blood Merino stud. The phone exchange ended in 1962. The Peppin stud ceased when Mr & Mrs Tilbrook retired. The property is still farmed by the Tilbrook family. The original farmhouse was demolished in 1978.
