New York, the city thatnever sleeps, especially on thewater. I have so much tocover in this article, howeverlet’s start off with one of ourfavourites... ferries! From thecommuter ferries, to highspeed, to tourist, to Point Ato Point B, in the Harbour, there are ferries galore! Oneof the oldest ferry lines is theStaten Island Ferry, operatedby the New York CityDepartment ofTransportation founded in1817 and is free of cost.Prior to the World TradeCentre attack vehicles wereallowed on the ferry, howeverthat is no longer the case.Currently it has one linewhich is around 5 miles long
( about 8 ½kilometres) andhas 8 vessels. There is the St.George terminal inStaten Island andSouth Ferry at thetip of BatteryPark. The dailyridership isaround 75,000people.
Alongwith theStaten Islandferry thereare the Statueof Libertyferriesoperated byStatue
Cruises. Statue Cruises is aHornblower Companyservice to Alcatraz Island.Statue Cruises gained theoperation in 2007 taking
Circle Line's title ofserving the NationalPark Service for 54 years. There are also somesmaller commuter
ferries such asNew York WaterTaxi, New YorkWaterway and
Liberty LandingFerry.
Now it's not onlyferries that are on theharbour ...during thesummer the harbouris filled with pleasure
boaters. Most boatsin this area average
to around 40 feet(about 14metres). Thereare also manysightseeing/dinn
er cruises. Thedinner boats rangegreatly in size
...from 60 feetto 200+. Continued
NEW YORKHARBOUR
Since the 19th century the Port of New York hasplayed host to many types of vessel, including thegreat liners of Cunard and White Star Line. Capt.Matt tells us more.

Don't get me wrong it's notonly larger boats that occupythese waters. There are manykayakers and every year thereis a kayak race aroundManhattan Island.
Let’s take a touch on some ofthe events that happen in theharbour. One of the largestis the fourth of Julyfireworks. Every year onAmericas Independence Daythere are several bargesplaced around the harbourdisplaying an incrediblefireworks display. There arealso the Superboat racesalong with the ‘Poker Run’speedboat races. One of theforgotten events are thetugboat races ...yes, you heardme tugboat races! It's prettyself explanatory; this is whereseveral tugboat companiesenter tugboats to race eachother. It's quite the event!
I'm trying not to go toooverboard so now I'll justgive some generalinformation about theharbour. As you know in thegame there are severalbridges, sometimes posing
height restrictions. The mostwell known is the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, the gatewayto New York Harbour linkingStaten Island to Brooklyn. Now there are the bridges onthe East River, an easy way toremember them are the'BMW' bridges, standing forBrooklyn Manhattan andWilliamsburg bridges. Thelast bridge featured in theenvironment is the 59th streetBridge.
Points of interest include, one of my favourites: SouthStreet Seaport. Severalferries/harbour cruises leavefrom there. Also theButtermilk Channel is where
the Queen Mary 2 berths.Left out? Unfortunately Iunderstand that there areseveral places that weren'tincluded in the environment;however I feel that it wouldmake a huge difference to thegame. One is Chelsea Piers, many cruise ships dock hereincluding Norwegian CruiseLines ships. Another hugething that was left out wasthe ports of Newark andElizabeth. These portsprovide a huge supply ofgoods to the United Statesand is one of the busiestports.

Bugsier 2 first came to our screens back in 2008. Several yearson in 2011 she is still a popular vessel in the ShipSim series.
By ShipAddict
With the launch of the NewHorizons add-on pack onMarch 25th 2008, for the firsttime Ship Simulator fans hadthe opportunity to pilot anazimuth tractor tug, the newvessel being the Bugsier 2.
In real life, Bugsier 2is owned by theBugsier Reedereitowing company andshe operates inHamburg, mainly as aharbour tug to assistwith day to day portoperations.
Both Bugsier 2 and her sisterBugsier 3 havetheirazimuthunitsplacedunder thebow with aprotective platesituated just in frontin order to protect theunits should the tug ever runaground.
Bugsier 2 was designed as aseagoing tug with offshorework in mind as well asharbour duties, therefore herforecastle was raised byroughly 1.5 metres allowingher to be used for deep seaoperations.
The vessel hasaccommodation for the crewwith three single cabins andtwo twin cabins, all of whichare air conditioned.
Bugsier Reederei officiallytook over Bugsier 2 on the
June 30th
2006 andstarted
operations in
Hamburgon July 8th.
While designed for bothharbour use and offshorework, she spends her time inHamburg assis-ting with
arrivals and departures.
Even though she is used forharbour work she does havethe equipment and capabilityto carry out deep sea workincluding anchor handling, however the anchor cannotbe placed on the deck. Shealso has an onboard crane onthe after deck which can lift amaximum weight of 9.1tonnes at a fully extendedoutreach of ten metres.
Bugsier 2 is powered by twoDeutz MWM Type 9 M 628engines which give her aspeed of 12 knots. They alsopower the air conditioningunits and even twosearchlights above thewheelhouse.
When undertaking harbourduties Bugsier 2 tends tooperate with a crew of threepeople, however she can take
a maximum of ten crewmembers at most.
Insidethe
Bugsier2 there
are sixwatertight
compartments thatprotect the main areas
of the vessel, including theengine room.
In the wheelhouse Bugsier 2has two radar systems...Continued on next page...

...an electronic chart system, echo sounder, and auto pilotfunction, and an AIS systemas well as magnetic andsatellite compasses.
Bugsier 2 in ShipSim
Bugsier 2 was one of the newvessels included in the NewHorizons add-on and she wasmodelled by forum member,‘SimonDR’ in Lightwave.
The 3D model itself isbeautiful with a lot ofattention to detailincluding navigationlights, life rings andbollards.
Inside the wheelhouseconsoles and buttons haveall been modelled as well asbookshelves and seating.
The winches and life boathave also been modelled aswell as the break water, designed to protect her fromlarger waves when used inoffshore operations.
When Bugsier 2 first cameto Ship Simulator she wasa welcome alternative tothe Fairmount Sherpa inonline multiplayer;particularly in Marseillewhere it was very popularto sail container shipsinto the port andmoor them inthe dock area.
Since she
wasreleased with
New Horizons peoplehave always had troublecontrolling her due to herazimuth drives which havethe ability to rotate 360degrees allowing the player tospin her around at fast speedsand in tight spaces.
With a bollard pull of 63tonnes she is perfect touse in in-game missions
along with the pushboat Herkules Atlas as
well as multiplayer,particularly for
assisting largeships
suchas the
Latitudeand Vermaas.
Even though she is used forharbour work in real life, shecan still be used in-game inan open sea environment toassist with rescue operationsin missions as well asmultiplayer.
Bugsier 2 has returned onceagain in Ship SimulatorExtremes along with herazimuth drives and featuresin the ‘Core’ campaignsection of the game. With therecent release of the MissionEditor she will hopefullyfeature in user made missionsand continue to be a popularShip Simulator vessel.
‘Mvsmith’ has produced a tutorialon using Azimuth drives inShipSim 08. You can view it here.

Ocean Liners
Normandie was considered bymany to be the world’s ultimateocean liner, she was the largestand fastest passenger shipafloat when she entered servicein 1935, and a pinnacle ofFrench design. Constructionstarted in January 1931 at StNazaire, western France, whereall previous French ocean linershad also been constructed. Theliner was completed in May1935.The shipyard Chantiers etAteliers de St Nazaire(Penhoët) built the liner for theshipping company CompagnieGénérale Transatlantique(CGT), which was known asthe ‘French Line’.Normandie’s design wascreated by Russian émigréVladimir Yourkevitch, andincorporated beautiful lines, arounded stem and bulbous bowbeneath the waterline. Theliner’s dimensions wererevolutionary, with a length of1,029 feet and width of 184feet. The hull design alsoenabled the ship to achieve amaximum recorded speed of32.2 knots.Despite having three funnels, the last one was actually adummy, used to house kennels. The interior spaces werelavishly decorated by a numberof designers in a modern artdeco style.During sea trials it was revealedthat Normandie had vibrationissues, this was later correctedat the end of her first season.Normandie was also fitted witha radar detection device fordetecting objects, the first
passenger liner to have such adevice. On 29th May, 1935, on her firstvoyage, the Normandie brokethe speed record for crossingthe Atlantic and became theBlue Riband holder, and HalesTrophy winner. For a number of years the SSNormandie providedpassengers with luxury oceantravel. However with the outbreak ofwar, the Normandie ultimatelywas seized in New York by theUnited States, who intended toconvert it into a naval transportvessel, and rename it ‘USSLafayette’.In February 1942 during theconversion from passengerliner to navy ship a fire brokeout. The fire departmentpumped water onto the ship inan effort to put out the fire, however the water ultimatelycaused the ship to capsize.Although the liner was refloated, it was impractical torestore her to her originalcondition, and she wasscrapped in October 1946.
Welcome to the Ocean Liners page, produced in association with OceanLiners.com. Thismonth’s liner is the SS Normandie, one of the fastest Atlantic liners of her day.
