TelephoneFrom CHINA to ABROAD
- International direct dialling
1. Dial the international dialing access code (00).
2. Dial the country code of the country you are calling. (If the number starts with a 0, drop the 0
and dial everything else. )
For example, to call the US number (123) 456-7890, dial 00+1+123-456-7890.
By default, the international long distance function is closed by telecom carrier, so you need to call
them to open the service and your may be required to pay 300 yuan or more as a deposit to
activate the international long distance function. Also it's expensive for international direct dailing.
For example, call USA is 0.80 yuan / 6 seconds (8.00 yuan per min) and 40% off at concession
period 0:00-7:00 daily.
- Using IP card
This is a cheaper way to make an international call. Telecom opreators offer many kinds of IP
cards, such as 17900 calling card by China Telecom. It's the most compatible card and can be used
in most area of China. It's cheaper then IDD, for example, call USA is only 0.30 yuan / min + 0.10
yuan /min local connection charges.
IP cards are often sold at discount prices. You can buy below two cards online and get card
number w/ PIN instantly.
Miscellaneous
Telephone From ABROAD to CHINA
1. Dial the international dialing access code (typically 00, 011 or 0011)
2. Dial China's country code (86). (If the number starts with a 0, drop the 0 and dial everything
else. )
For example, to call the Chinese number (012)-345-6789 from the US dial 011+86+12-345-6789.
Again, direct dialing is the most expensive way to make an international call.
Mobile Phone
In China, you can use SIM card and choose to buy one from 3 main mobile service providers:
China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom. There are many branches of these three
companies and all of them provide international calling programs of themselves. To buy a SIM
card, you need to show your passport to the clerk and then choose a mobile number you
prefer. OC will help get this done.

Great Firewall of China. That means you cannot get access to them in China mainland, but if
you want, there are many online VPN software which helps get access to those blocked
websites and some of them are free. Be careful to select online VPN service.

Tips
1. Most of the time, vendors and taxi drivers ask for a small note
when you pass them a RMB100 note, sometime they cannot
change it and sometimes are not willing to. So it is a good idea
to stack up on RMB10 bills.
