LETTER FROMTHE PRESIDENT“There are as many worlds as there are kinds of days, and as an opal changes its colours and its re to the nature of a day, so do I.”John Steinbeck

I would like to welcome residents to the new Evanston-Creek-side Newsletter. In the months ahead, we are going to be looking for your input and contributions to make this news-letter distinctly our own. Therefore, if there is any content or changes that you would like to see made to the existing format, please forward your suggestions and comments to [email protected].

We are now a month or so into the school year, and have witnessed some growing pains with the addition of our new schools and the applicable tra c associated with them. In distinction of these safety issues, we are asking residents to play a leadership role and educate your children on tra c safety, but also to pay particular attention in and around the school zones. The Board is cognizant of these issues and we are working with the City and CPS to enforce and correct these issues. If you witness an unsafe act or have something that you would like to address; either make a tra c service request or contact our CPS Community Resource O cer – Cst. Steve Kelly ([email protected]) and Director of Community Safety – Doug Lamb ([email protected]).

Finally, the biting air is signalling that winters embrace is not that far away. The Board will be installing a temporary ice sur-face this year, and we are canvassing for volunteers to assist with the set up and preparation of this rink. Conjointly, the Board is also looking for volunteers to join us. We currently have a couple of vacant directorships: Secretary/Newsletter and Memberships. If you are interested in either one of these positions, please email [email protected].

Regards,

Jason Yardley

Look out for each other! The City of Calgary, Calgary Police Service, Alberta Health Region, the Alberta Motor Association and other tra c safety partners are working together to reduce the number and severity of pedestrian collisions. Through education, enforcement and en-gineering strategies, these partners are striving to improve intersection safety in Calgary.

The slogan of the campaign is "Look out for each other". It was created to emphasize that the safety of pedestrians on Calgary's streets is the shared respon-sibility of all users of our roadways and sidewalks.

Be awareMake eye contact with drivers turning right before you step into a crosswalk. Make sure they see you, plan on stopping, and have time to stop. Also, don’t assume that because the car in the lane closest to you has stopped that other cars will stop too.

Be safePedestrians do have the right of way at marked and unmarked crosswalks; but be careful, some drivers might not know that rule or always follow it. Being right won’t keep you from being hit.

Stay alert while walking:• Unplug headphones when crossing the street.• Hang up your cell phone until you are out of the

intersection.• Texting can wait until you know you are safe.• Look up and make eye contact with the approach-

ing driver and make sure the driver sees you.

For more information on pedestrian safety, visit Calgary.ca/lookout.

The Calgary NW ECD (Early Childhood Development) Co-alitions, consist of three coali-tions who have joined forces with parents, community members, organizations and

professionals, who are all working together to better the lives of young children and their families. We work hard to support ve important developmental areas for children – Social Competence, Emotional Maturity, Lan-guage & Thinking Skills, Physical Health & Well-being, and Communication Skills & General Knowledge. We do this through providing opportunities for parent and children to learn, grow, share, and participate in a variety of di erent programs, workshops, and events. We are al-ways looking for interested parties to join our coalitions.

IN & AROUNDCALGARY

Happy October!

It’s hard to believe but Halloween is just around the cor-ner! Soon the streets will be ooded with little ghouls and goblins looking to ll bags full of sweet treats. Hal-loween is a great opportunity to meet your neighbours, admire some creative costumes and, of course, enjoy the occasional mini chocolate bar!

While Halloween is a fun time for people, it can be a scary time for pets! The strange visitors, ringing door-bell and unusual costumes may cause stress or even frighten a family pet. Just as families must take safety precautions to ensure a safe and happy Halloween for children, pet owners should be mindful of safety dur-ing the festivities. To make sure Halloween is fun for the whole family, Calgary Humane Society wants to remind you of a few safety tips for your pets!1. Keep candy out of reach of pets! Chocolate, arti cial

sweeteners and certain types of nuts are toxic to ani-mals.

2. Set up a safe space! Setting up a room with your pet’s favorite items in a quiet area of the house will help to block out some of the stressful aspects of the holiday.

3. Leave Fido at home. Including the family pet on trick or treating may seem like fun, but strange costumes and fast moving children could cause your pooch a lot of stress.

4. Put a sign on the door asking trick or treaters to knock, especially if your pet reacts to the doorbell!

5. Be cautious with your costume, especially if your pet is easily frightened. Consider setting your pet up in a safe space before getting changed into your festive duds.

6. If your pet is dressing up, choose a costume that does

not restrict your pet’s airway or movement. Keep dress-up sessions short and watch for signs that your pet is becoming annoyed with their costume. Most pets do not like costumes so if you must dress up your pet, consider snapping a few photos and removing the costume right away.

7. Do not allow your cats to roam. A popular myth is that cats can fall victim to foul play on Halloween. While we have not seen that occur in Calgary, roaming cats can fall victim to the increased tra c or may become lost if they are frightened by all the little ghouls and goblins collecting candy.

8. Looking for more tools to help a stressed out pet at Halloween? Contact our FREE behaviour helpline at 403-723-6019 to speak to one of our behaviour con-sultants about di erent products and strategies that may work for your pet.

From all of us at Calgary Humane Society, have a safe and happy Ha lloween!

It’s October, and students are settled into the school year. The mornings are colder, the leaves are falling and we start to think about the Thanksgiving holiday and re- ect on all that we are grateful for.

We have much to be thankful for this year. We are grateful that we live in a city that highly values education. We see this through the increasing number of families choosing Calgary Board of Education schools for their children each year. We also see the value placed on public education by the City of Calgary and our communities, who provide tremendous support for our students. Your support helps our students succeed, and for you, we are grateful.

We are grateful for our employees. Nearly 14,000 peo-ple from all across the city of Calgary choose to work with the CBE and their e orts and passion make a dif-ference in the lives of our students every day. Some are faces you see in our schools, and some work behind the scenes, but each employee contributes to our success.

We are grateful for our families and communities. By getting involved in school councils, volunteering in

classrooms, supporting schools with their fundraisers and projects and sharing your experiences you make our school system better.

We are grateful for our students. Their commitment, ex-citement and energy fuels our system. They are the rea-son we are here. Every day, we see our students learn, grow and challenge themselves and others. Our stu-dents inspire us and help us realize how much the work we all do to make this world a better place truly matters.

As community members, parents and educators, we have a chance every day to make a real di erence in a child’s life. We have a chance to engage children and en-courage their lifelong learning. The moments we get to spend with our children and students matter. For that, we are grateful.

If you are interested in learning more about how the Board of Trustees advocate to protect public education and student success, we’d love to speak with you. Con-tact us at [email protected].

Mike and Suzanne were both born and raised in Calgary. Mike has family in Win-nipeg and Suzanne has family in Sas-katchewan and Trinidad. Mike grew up

in South Calgary while Suzanne grew up in the North. After they were married Suzanne convinced Mike to move to the North (which Mike still refers to as ‘Ban ’). Suzanne’s sister and the rest of her family are in North Calgary and it was important to her to remain close to them. Suzanne grew up with her big sister and Mike has two older brothers.

This power couple both owns their own companies. Mike runs Vintage Construction Group. Having man-aged various companies in the last eight years, Mike had always dreamed of opening a business of his own. This year he created Vintage Construction Group and has done various projects in Evanston, such as build-ing fences for an entire block, dry wall and renovations. Vintage Construction Group is a full service general con-tractor o ering top-quality construction products. Mike and his team spend their days completing a number

of di erent projects, such as decks and fences, garage packages, roo ng, basement developments and cus-tom home developments.

Suzanne has worked in the corporate world for the last 15 years. She was laid o due to the economic down-turn and decided to start her own business. Prior to working in the o ce, Suzanne was already involved in the beauty industry.

It’s not hard to see the passion Suzanne has for what she does.

“I chose spray tanning because it’s a good pick-me-up for men and women. With so many body image issues we face, it’s hard. I struggle all the time but a spray tan makes me feel and look good. It’s a lot safer than lay-ing in a tanning bed. I did that in my younger days and it wrecked my skin. I also had a close friend who was diagnosed with skin cancer. It’s very scary. At the end of

the day I wanted clients, no matter shape or size, to feel good about themselves. Everyone deserves that.”

Having a husband with a renovation company de nitely came in handy when it came to creating her beautiful home studio. “It’s been a great success,” says Suzanne. “I have met so many wonderful people. I am a social person and love to interact with people so doing this is a better t for me than sitting behind a computer.” Cli-ents can come to her Evansridge studio or she can go to them. My business is completely mobile and works for those with kids or have a busy schedule. I do my best to make my services competitive and a ordable. I love making people feel good about themselves!”

When they are not working, Mike and Suzanne enjoy spending time with family and friends and of course their dogs, Lola, their 5-year-old pit- bull, and the Pom-eranians, three-year-old Purdy and ve-year-old Mieka. Most people nd the combination of the three dogs

odd but they all get along wonderfully. Suzanne is sad that pit bulls have such a negative reputation. “It’s not the breed, it’s the owners,” she says. “Pit bulls are gentle and friendly and love their people.” Along with their dogs, Mike and Suzanne love their home. They describe it as their escape from the everyday. Suzanne paints in her spare time and Mike enjoys football.

Suzanne and Mike moved to Evanston from Tuscany a year ago. They chose the community because they have a lot of friends close by. They also enjoy the stores and how easy it is to get to Stoney Trail. They were happy when the 14th street entrance opened but are still frus-trated by the tra c lights and constant stops and hopes that it’s xed soon!

Suzanne describes her neighbours as being very kind and welcoming. They will remain in Evanston into the near future but they do want to eventually move to an acreage.

Alberta Health Services: EMSHalloween SafetyThe members of Calgary’s Halloween Partners for Safety: Calgary’s Child Magazine, EMS, Calgary Police, Fire, 9-1-1, Bylaw, Transit, and Shaw Communications would like to remind parents and trick-or-treaters of some Halloween safety tips, as October 31st approaches. Partners for Safety vehicles will be out patrolling communities on Halloween night to provide a visible safety resource for parents and trick-or-treaters.

Trick-or-Treaters• Remember: all regular pedestrian rules still apply. Be sure

to cross the road at marked crosswalks, or well-lit corners only. It is safest to work your way up one side of the street, and then cross once to the other side.

• Stay away from houses that are not well lit. Do not accept rides from strangers, or enter any home you feel is unsafe.

• Let your parents know where you are going to be at all times (route) and advise them if you will be late returning.

Costumes• All costume accessories, such as sticks, rods, or wands,

should be soft and exible, with no sharp edges.• Consider using hypoallergenic make-up kits instead of

masks that may impair breathing, or vision.• Be sure costumes are loose enough to be worn over warm

clothing, but not so long that they become a tripping hazard. Costumes should not be longer than your child’s ankles.

• Ensure your child is wearing adequate foot wear that takes into consideration weather conditions and walking.

• Consider sending your children with a ashlight for ad-ditional safety and increased visibility.

• When purchasing, or making costumes, look for materials and accessories that are labeled ame-resistant.

• Choose bright colored costumes that are highly visible. Add-ing re ective tape to costumes further increases visibility.

Parents• Be certain that young trick-or-treaters are accompanied

by an adult. Older children should stay in groups. • Advise children not to eat anything until they return

home. Dispose of any items that appear to have been tampered with, or that are not properly wrapped.

• Pre-determine boundaries to trick-or-treat within and es-tablish a rm time to return home.

IN & AROUNDCALGARY

Pumpkins aren’t just an orange vegetable; they also come in white, blue and green. Great for unique

Halloween carvings!

Frankenstein, the famous monster of the iconic story bearing the same title, is actually not named Frankenstein. His maker, Dr. Frankenstein, called him “creature” and “demon”.

MLA CALGARY-MACKAY-NOSE HILL KAREN MCPHERSONCurrent Member(403) [email protected]

The fall session of the Alberta Legislature is starting at the end of this month and I am looking forward to being your voice in the legislature again this session.

Over the summer and early fall I have heard from con-stituents across the riding and attended some amazing community events. I really enjoy every opportunity to connect with you.

Earlier this fall, the Minister of Seniors and Housing, the Hon. Lori Sigurdson, visited Calgary Mackay Nose Hill for a tour and tea with residents of Holy Cross Manor in Evanston. Our seniors really enjoyed the chance to meet with the Minister.

In early September, I was very happy to join the NDP Caucus for this year’s Pride Parade in downtown Calgary on Labour Day weekend. I’ve been an ally for many years and I’m very proud to be part of a government that val-ues all people, including the LGBTQ+ community.

This fall both, Kenneth D. Taylor Elementary School and Our Lady of Grace School opened in Evanston. Ken-neth D. Taylor School will be open rst to grades K-3 and down the road to serve grades K-4. My o ce was pleased to be able to provide two provincial ags to the school and we are looking forward to the grand open-ing in the spring. Our Lady of Grace School has grades K-9 and I’m looking forward to the Blessing and Dedica-tion Ceremony in November.

Throughout the month of October I will be hosting cof-fee and chat events on Fridays at 1pm. Please join me as I would love to meet you! On October 7th, 14th, and 21st, I will be at the Starbucks next to the Superstore at 7020 4th Street NW. On October 28th, I will be at the Good Earth in Creekside at 11988 Symons Valley Rd. NW. I look forward to seeing you there!

As always, I welcome your input. Please feel free to con-tact me by email at [email protected], by phone at 403-215-7710 or drop by the o ce at #106, 8220 Centre Street NE, beside First Calgary Credit Union.

COUNCILLOR, WARD 2 JOE MAGLIOCCA403-268-2430 [email protected]/ward2Facebook: Joe Magliocca • Twitter: @Joe_Magliocca

I would like to take this opportunity to wish residents of Ward 2 a Happy Thanksgiving. In spite of the economic challenges we face in both our city and province, as Calgarians we still have much to be grateful for.

This year’s construction season is wrapping up and de-spite the many delays due to our wet summer, many infrastructure enhancements and community improve-ments were complete throughout the communities in Ward 2. Some of these improvements include: • Stoney Trail / Sarcee Trail NW Interchange upgrade – to

be completed by year end.• Twinning of 112 Ave west of Sarcee Trail NW – to be

completed by year end.• Crowfoot Way NW Enhanced Crosswalk Markings &

Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB).• RRFB for Crosswalk at Arbour Lake Road NW & Arbour

Crest Drive NW.• Re-development of the pathway under Symons Valley

Parkway NW.• New pathway at Robert Thirsk High School.

For Sage Hill and area transit riders Route 429 has been extended from the current terminus in Sherwood to the Sage Hill transit hub just north of the Sage Hill Walmart. This change will provide a new connection from the Sage Hill and Kincora area to the northwest LRT, as well as provide connections to Route 425 and the north cen-tral area of the city. It will also help connect the newly emerging shopping centre to surrounding communities.

Joe’s Tip:Halloween is coming up and with children excited and in costumes, please remember to slow down and be espe-cially cautious in residential neighborhoods and around playground zones.

We’re opening soon.
