A Chara

The Live Register in Mallow has fallen by 24% since the Government took office in 2011. TheGovernment has exceeded the target of 100,000 new jobs which it set for itself when enteringoffice.

My target for Mallow has always been to create jobs and attract companies, such as MagniIndustries, to the region. Employment through construction of local school projects are just asimportant as foreign companies setting up here. The success of indigenous companies, such asEPS, play a major role in ensuring the recovery is felt locally as well as nationally. The next stepincludes the South West Action Plan for jobs which, further specifies the sectors where townssuch as Mallow can thrive. Plans like this become reality through the vision and hard work oforganisations like the Mallow Development Partnership which, has a tangible effect on the townand the surrounding areas. If you have any query you would like to discuss with me, please don'thesitate to contact me at the office or online.

A NEW CHAPTER AT SCOILGHOBNATAN I was delighted to officially open the new extension at ScoilGhobnatan before the summer holidays. This is a vital piece ofinfrastructure for the school community on the Southside of Mallowand one I have championed since entering Government.

I will continue to prioritise investment in bricks and mortar for ourlocal schools so that our children across Mallow can learn and grow ina safe environment.

OVER €4.5 MILLIONINVESTED IN MALLOWPRIMARY SCHOOLS TO DATE

Thisinvestment has been spent locally and ensures a roadmap for allour schools for the future. I was delighted to recently confirmplanning permission at the Davis College Campus and GaelscoilThomais Daibhis that will allow those school communities growfurther. MDP SETS VISION FOR MALLOW

I am very much involved with Mallow Development Partnership. Itseeks to ensure economic sustainability and social progress for thetown through a variety of projects. The success of the Maths &Science was underpinned by the excellent year long projectcommemorating Thomas Davis, amongst other projects. Structuresare now in place that will streamline and focus the partnership forthe future and assist job creation. I am looking forward tocontinuing to work with the Partnership and Mallow Chamber. Thisis a team effort, involving Mallow people working voluntarily forthe future of the town.

SUPPORTING NEW JOBS INMALLOW The 50 new jobs at EPS are supported by Enterprise Ireland and IDAIreland. EPS is a strong, intergenerational family company. They haveshown major resilience through tough economic times. TheGovernment is strongly supporting companies that have strongexport potential in product and services. EPS has shown itself to bea strong leader in the water services sector. This jobs announcementcomes on the back of a strong relationship with the IDA andEnterprise Ireland.

I was delighted to partner with EPS on a recent Trade Mission toLondon where the company is seeking to expand its operations inthe UK market.

I am in constant contact with the IDA on a number of developmentsrelated to the Mallow area, including supporting Magni Industries inQuartertown. I am confident of North Cork’s prime position withinthe IDA in the South West Region. IDA supported industries assist491 jobs in the Mallow area – a significant number.

MALLOW RELIEF ROAD CANDELIVER RESULTS

I led a delegation this month from Mallow to Dublin to discuss theimportance of a relief road for the town. The MallowRepresentative Group carried out an independent assessment tofurther the case to re-activate the planning and developmentprocess to complete the relief road for Mallow. As the local Minister I was delighted to initiate this meeting withmy Ministerial colleague, Paschal Donohue. This report makes thestrong business case for the relief road, a road that is vital to thecontinued advancement of the town of Mallow. This report allowsthe opportunity to make the national economic gains viable forthe people of Mallow. Business and civil society working in tandemhave made a strong case and it is one I fully support.

A report was submitted to the Group by Indecon InternationalEconomic Consultants, which outlined that the project woulddeliver overall user benefits in the order of €90 million for Mallow.

FREE GP CARE FORMALLOW UNDER 6S There has been a 93% uptake by North Cork GPs and parents canstill register by logging onto www.gpvisitcard.ie.

The online system is easy-to-use and is as simple as booking aflight. Anyone who has any queries or questions can contact myoffice where we’d be happy to show people through the sign-upprocess.

I am delighted to finally see this initiative being rolled out acrossthe country, because it will ease the pressure on working families, and give peace of mind to parents of sick children. It means thatno parent of young children will ever be in a position again wheremoney becomes an obstacle to bringing their child to a GP.

Without Labour in Government, this simply would not havehappened. It is perhaps the single most important development inprimary care in the history of the State, and my colleague, PrimaryCare Minister Kathleen Lynch, played a crucial in getting it acrossthe line.

WINNING BACK MAIN STREETTraffic lights in Mallow are causing a serious problem to commutersand traders. I have engaged with Cork County Council to turn offthe lights completely until a proper solution is found. I welcomethe half hour free parking but I do believe that clarity is needed onthe operation of the system. There is confusion as to how the firsthalf hour operates.
