Whether you are interested in business, the arts, e-commerce or information technologies, you want to prepare yourself for a successful career. You need to learn how to work both independently and as part of a team, to communicate effectively and apply knowledge in many ways. At Sheridan we can teach you how to apply knowledge creatively.

Page 5: Sheridan College viewbook 2011/2012

The workplace is changing.

Pick a job. Any job. Ask yourself, “Has that job changed over the last 10 years? The last five?” Whether the job is in business, education, IT, the arts or any other field, it has likely evolved. The impact of technology, the Internet, mobile communications, the economy and global trade are being felt in every field.

What will it take to prepare yourself for a rapidly changing workplace, now and in the future, when things will be moving even faster?

Every career choice requires a solid base of knowledge and understanding in language, literacy and numbers, as well as learning specific to your chosen discipline. Your future success will depend on being able to apply this knowledge creatively, in ways that go beyond what you can find in any textbook.

This is what Sheridan has been teaching for over 40 years. In the process we have become leaders in various fields, such as animation – Sheridan graduates are behind the award-winning stories and special effects you see in many hit movies. That creative approach to learning is used in all Sheridan programs, from business to technology to education.

Get Ready.

Sheridan offers career-focused programs to a diverse student body – from high school to postsecondary graduates and internationally trained newcomers. All are provided with the blend of theoretical and applied learning that makes them career ready when they graduate.

We offer flexibility, so that you can build on your existing knowledge, credentials and experience, to attain qualifications that employers recognize and value. For full-time students there are five types of credentials:

Ontario College Certificate programs can generally be earned in one year or less. Some are career-specific; others are foundation programs. Foundation programs are a stepping stone to further deeper study in your field of interest. They introduce theory and practice to students who want to assess their talent, build a basic portfolio or skill set, and chart a course for further study.

Ontario College Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas are two and three-year programs. Some are for a broad base of study, which enables graduates to pursue various career opportunities and others are more focused as preparation for a specific field of work.

Bachelor’s Degrees combine the theory and critical thinking of a university program with hands-on, applied learning and a practical work term. Top employers compete for these graduates and entrance into the programs themselves can be highly competitive.

Graduate Certificates are one-year postgraduate programs that generally require applicants to hold a postsecondary diploma or degree. These programs offer students the oppor-tunity to further hone their skills and gain practical experience that will help them gain a competitive edge in the job market.

We offer a wide range of credentials to suit your interests and ambitions

university transfer Agreements

Our goal is to make it as easy as possible to build on qualifications you have earned at other institutions or at Sheridan. We have agreements with universities in Canada and abroad that provide advanced standing into related programs. Please see the chart starting on page 25 for a sample of these agreements or visit our website. For general information on transfer agreements in Ontario, go to www.ocutg.on.ca.

Joint college – university Degrees

Collaborative programs are partnerships between Sheridan and university partners where students study at both institutions. Some collaborative programs allow students to earn credentials from both schools, while others award the university credential alone.

Financing your educationeducation is an investment in your future. Shortage of funds should not prevent you from benefiting. We can help you secure funding and every year we administer over $4 million of bursaries, scholarships and awards that are additional to government assistance.

gOVernMent assistance (Osap)The Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) is a government-sponsored program designed to help students fund education. OSAP entitlements are determined based on specific financial circumstances.

OSAP loans have to be repaid. In addition, there are grants and bursaries that do not have to be paid back. Full-time students can apply for grants to help pay for technology and textbooks.

Detailed information, including online application procedures and deadlines for applications are on the OSAP website at osap.gov.on.ca

sHeridan bursariesThere are a number of bursaries for Sheridan students who demonstrate financial need. These include:

Entrance bursaries* are open to students attending Sheridan for the first time. Amounts range from $500 - $1,500.

Needs based bursaries* are program-specific awards offered to students who are studying in some of Sheridan’s applied degree, post-graduate and other higher cost programs. Students must be receiving OSAP or out-of-province financial assistance to qualify. Amounts range from $250 - $2,500.

Set-Aside Bursaries (for OSAP and non-OSAP students) are based on need and available to students studying in a postsecondary program. Once your classes have begun you will be invited to apply online. Amounts range from $250 - $2,000.

For full details on all the Financial Aid options Sheridan has to offer, including awards information and application forms, visit http://financialaid.sheridaninstitute.ca.

*Application forms are available on our financial aid website.

costs including tuition fees $3,000 - $12,000; residence $5,700; food and living expenses $1,000 - $2,000; books, supplies and parking $1,000 or more. These costs are approximate.

Stick to the budget so your money will last through the year and you won’t get into a financial crisis.

Apply for all the awards, scholarships and bursaries you are eligible for.

Apply for OSAP at least 10 weeks prior to the start of your classes.

If you apply for OSAP assistance, your fees will be deferred (postponed) until receipt of your loan, and you only need pay a small amount up front when your fees are due ($300).

If you are having financial trouble, please come in and talk to us. We can help you budget and control your costs.

generAL TrAnSFer POLICIeSEach university determines its own transfer policies for students with college credits/credentials and these are subject to change. The information below is intended as a general guide. Students must contact the Admissions Offices at the universities they are interested in for specific details.

AdMISSIOn TO unIVerSITYAt most universities, a minimum of one year of study at Sheridan will enable you to be considered for admission to year 1 at that university, even if you do not have six Grade 12 U or M credits from high school. However, some university programs have specific academic pre-requisites that will be required for eligibility and it is your responsibility to determine and complete those pre-requisites. You must meet the universities’ minimum grade requirement to be considered and may need to exceed that requirement for admission.

TrAnSFer CredITThe amount of transfer credit varies from university to university and is granted dependent on:

a) The compatibility of your Sheridan studies with the program you wish to enter at University

b) Your overall academic average at Sheridan and, in some cases, your individual course marks

c) Typically, you will need to successfully complete more than one year of study at Sheridan for transfer credit(s)

Some universities grant “block transfer credit” based on the length of your Sheridan studies. Other universities assess transfer credit on a course by course basis (advanced standing). It is your responsibility to check with the Admissions Office at the university of your choice.
