13:1You visit a large university where you’re part of a big tour, so you don’t ask many

questions. At Thiel, during your personal tour, you ask the student guide about how

she really likes Thiel. She loves it. She says the low student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1

means that she receives a ton of individual attention. She’s an athlete and just

landed a role in a play and has time to study. You make a quick mental list of pros

and cons. It’s clear: Thiel is the place for you.

We want you to know exactly what you’re getting into when you attend Thiel College.

That’s why we’ve articulated what distinguishes Thiel from other schools in what we call

“The Thiel Commitment.” When you commit to Thiel, we commit to you…for life!

AN EDUCATION WITH BREADTH AND DEPTH All of our academic programs can be

completed in four years. They provide a strong foundation that prepares you for a career, a

core of liberal arts classes that stretch your mind and elective courses that allow you to

individualize your education.

HELP FOR UNDECIDED MAJORS Take a Career Discernment Seminar after you’re

admitted, before classes begin. In the fall, choose an exploratory program in a discipline like

history or biology without locking yourself into a specific field of study.

EXTENSIVE CAREER GUIDANCE — FOR LIFE Whether you need help in career decision-

making, internship planning, job-hunting or networking, get help before, during and any time

after graduation from Thiel.

AFFORDABILITY Thiel is one of the least expensive private colleges in western Pennsylvania.

With our competitive scholarships and financial aid, we are often less expensive than regional

public schools.

WAYS TO SHOWCASE SKILLS With our co-curricular transcript and e-Portfolio system,

you can demonstrate in a tangible way to future employers and professional schools what

you’ve learned and accomplished.

NINTH–SEMESTER TUITION WAIVER Sometimes students need an additional semester to

finish their degrees because of “extras” like internships, service learning and study abroad

experiences. If so, for qualifying students, tuition is “on us” the ninth semester. On the other

hand, some of our students are able to graduate in 3.5 years and save a semester’s tuition!

POST–GRADUATE PERKS Our graduates can take additional classes with a 60 percent

tuition discount in existing classes with available seats. And don’t forget that networking with

thousands of Thiel alums will yield amazing advantages in your profession!

I talked to my high school guidance

counselor. She told me about a guy from

my high school who went to Thiel, so I

decided to check it out. I liked the feel of

the campus. I’m so glad I found Thiel.

21stIn 2009, the College launched the ongoing “Imagining Thiel” initiative that

involves the student body, faculty, and staff in discussions about positioning

Thiel for greatness in the 21st century. Recent developments because of this

dialogue include five new varsity sports, a new Theology and Youth Ministry

major, and a marching band. Watch for other new and exciting programs to

be announced soon.

RURAL SETTING, URBAN CONNECTIONS

Thiel is located on 135 beautifully landscaped

acres nestled near the center of Greenville.

Our students travel for internships and

entertainment to nearby cities like Pittsburgh,

Cleveland, Philadelphia, New York and

Washington, D.C.

OLD AND NEW Students love to walk

through the halls of the historic Greenville

Hall, which houses offices and classrooms,

was built in 1873 and was completely restored

in 1991. Our newest facility is the William A.

Robinson Theater, built in 2007, which

provides flexible spaces for the teaching and

performance of theatre arts.

Eat, relax, and meet your

friends at the Howard Miller

88%More than 88% of Thiel students live on campus. You’ll get to know your hall

mates well. You’ll have dinner with them, practice intramurals together and form

study groups. Some are in your classes. The more you are around them, the

more you enjoy their company. Okay, got to get going: you’re late for a meeting

– your hall is throwing a fundraiser for an organization called Autism Speaks, so

that an autistic child can have a specially-trained dog.

30Choose from nearly 30 residence halls,

apartments, theme houses and

townhouses for campus living. You’ll

spend a good portion of your time in

the residence hall environment, so we

want to give you choices.

EASY ACCESS The Academic Center is at

the heart of campus. This building houses

many classrooms plus faculty offices and

lecture halls. Adjacent is the Science Center,

which holds five floors of classrooms and

labs, including our new neuroscience labs.

COMFORTABLE SUPPORT The Langenheim

Memorial Library is a favorite place to study

with its nearly renovated, comfortable nooks.

The Library also houses The Learning

Commons, which provides career guidance,

academic support and career preparation.

Resident Assistants on each floor of the

residence halls are trained to help build a

community that will help students interact

with each other. Become an RA, make

friends and grow in the process.

Motivating you to do

Your Best

Two years after graduating from college,

I was back at Thiel teaching, and I loved

it. I continue to love it. When I left, I

didn’t imagine that I’d be here today.

That’s what I try to convey to my

students – their lives are going to take

some unexpected turns. I try to teach

them to be open to opportunities.

Freshman year you’re cuddling your

pillow, and your phone rings. It’s your

professor. “Missing this class will pull

your grade down,” he warns. You rush

to class. Two years later this same

professor waits three hours in his office

– 180 minutes – to serve as a job

reference on the phone. For you.

ACADEMIC SYNERGY Much of Thiel’s

curriculum is interdisciplinary. It will stretch

you as an individual and allow for wonderful

collaborations with professors across

disciplines. You’ll study the latest practices,

trends and theories and yet you really are in

the old-fashioned “community of scholars”

atmosphere. The professors enjoy their jobs so

much. Confront the world in an integrated,

holistic way. Get multiple perspectives and see

the relationships among the disciplines. Be part

of a very happy academic community.

An Education for Your Future

HIGHER THAN HIGH-TECH That’s because Thiel provides each student with a notebook

computer to promote the use of technology in the classroom and throughout campus. All

residence halls are wired with network access and offer free printing and paper. Faculty

utilize SMART classrooms in the Academic Center and Greenville Hall. Take your laptop

anywhere and you will notice an extensive wireless network on campus as well.

HIGHLY PRACTICAL Enjoy the best of a liberal arts education coupled with excellent

career preparation. As part of our Core Curriculum, you’ll take a series of multi-

disciplinary courses that will not only broaden your knowledge base; they’ll help you

develop the critical thinking and communication skills needed in your profession.

10,000Your senior Business Seminar is modeled after a program at Harvard University.

It begins with a formal dinner, where students mix with successful people. The first

speaker looks out at everyone in professional attire and says, “I visit a lot of schools,

and I rarely see people who look so great!” Throughout the semester, a dozen

successful Thiel grads visit to share their inspiring experiences. You realize that as a

graduate of Thiel, you’ll have more than 10,000 alumni friends for networking.

12Earn up to 12 semester credits

by completing internships.

That’s nearly 10 percent of your

total credits! An internship can

sometimes lead to permanent

employment for Thiel graduates.

For students who qualify, extra

layers of critical thinking and

interdisciplinary investigation are

offered through the Honors

Program. Need help to reach your

academic potential in the form of

tutoring or study groups? The

Learning Commons offers more

than 60 hours of support each week!

We have a different understanding about the

purpose of learning. We hope that our

students get great jobs and even become

wealthy, but education isn’t just for self-

benefit. We study the liberal arts to become

more free and fulfilled. Ultimately, an

education at Thiel is about serving others.

REV. DR. DEREK NELSONASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF RELIGION

HIGHLY EXPERIENTIAL Study neuroscience and benefit from Thiel’s partnership with

FHC Inc., a world leader in the manufacture of medical devices used in neuromodulation.

As a computer science major, help local entrepreneurs with their computer systems.

Environmental science students get first-hand experience with environmental analysis and

mapping with our GIS and GPS equipment.

HIGHLY MOBILE Conservation biology students travel 2,100 miles to biological field

stations in Costa Rica or across the country to Colorado. Political science majors can opt

for a Thiel Semester in Washington. Art majors may elect to study commercial art through

an exchange program with the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.

majoring in Criminal Justice Studies. But you’re equally grateful for the other

classes that zoomed you outside of your intellectual comfort zone. You’re sure that

the required courses that focus on Oral and Written Expression helped you get a

job as a state probation officer after your very first official job interview.

BUILDING BLOCKS. The foundational block is

that of the Core Requirement, sometimes called

general education requirements. These courses

build upon the courses students completed in

high school to strengthen their knowledge

about science, math, social science, the

humanities and literature. Core Requirements

help students understand how all knowledge

relates and how history, philosophy, religion

and literature share common themes and ideas.

TOMCATS RULE! Thiel’s athletic teams include 24 intercollegiate

sports, most at the Division III level of the National Collegiate

Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Presidents’ Athletic Conference

(PAC). A new Shooting Club is on the scene, and our facilities include

a new baseball and softball facility, a football and soccer stadium that

hosts 1,400 and a gym that seats 1,500. Our Fitness Center has plenty

of cardio machines and free weights, and an inflatable dome over the

football field offers extra recreation/practice space in the winter.

Greek life is vibrant at Thiel.

And it's more than parties

and social events. You'll be

able to develop leadership

skills through community

service projects like the

annual Seesaw-a-thon that

raises thousands of dollars

each year for local children

battling cancer.

110You talk with a Thiel student who participated in Semester at Sea, a study abroad

program where she lived on a ship, traveling the world and visiting ports like Japan,

Vietnam, India, South Africa and Brazil (just to name a few) for 110 days. She studied

sustainability issues and had many unforgettable experiences (like cage diving with

Great White sharks). You can’t wait to put all you’ve learned at Thiel to work on the

global stage too!

STEP UP AND STEP OUT Some classes at

Thiel offer built-in opportunities for service

through local nonprofit and community

organizations. Students in a communications

and a TV production class recently teamed

together to create a documentary video for

two regional shelter programs, to get the word

out about their services. A business

administration class helped a local medical

equipment recycling agency create an

inventory management system. Service to the

community yields practical learning and a

real sense of belonging.

Institute, which encourages, promotes and supports entrepreneurship in Thiel students,

regardless of their major! A state grant of $18,000 was recently awarded toward product

development for a computer-based locking device for door locks.

GET ON-THE-JOB EXPERIENCE Internships may begin as early as the second semester

of your freshman year! Intern at St. Paul’s, a Greenville retirement community. Or get out

of town for valuable experience with the Magic Kingdom college internship program in

Orlando. Other recent internships have included: animal care-giver, Pittsburgh Zoo and

Aquarium, and show programming assistant, SpikeTV/MTV, New York.

1stYou decide to be one of the many Thiel students who will be doing internships this

year. Your professors and the Career Services staff help you perfect your resume.

They put you through the paces with mock interviews, videotaping and giving you

feedback. Your professor tells you that a prospective employer tells him,

“I can spot a Thiel student before they even give me their resume by the way they

look and the way they present themselves.” Get used to being first choice!
