Simply Wonderful! Photos by Ed Savwoir.

The 8th Annual SPCA Garden Tour was a great success. The weather was wonderful, the gardens were wonderful, and the garden visi-tors, yes, they were wonderful too. Proceeds from the Garden Tour

go towards neighborhood beautifica-tion projects and every year more a n d m o r e neighbors are willing to share their garden re-treats with the community mak-ing more beautifi-cation project possible. This year

there were four new and four repeat Garden Hosts. A world of thanks goes out to our Gar-den Hosts: Don-ald Morgan, Mau-reen Stephenson, Margery Gold-berg , J a c k ie Green, Carole and Lee Smith, Deborah Royster and Robert Mal-son, Thyra Riley a n d F r a n k Dickey, and Lisa and Jeffrey Ross. Appreciation

is shown to our sponsors, Stone-Work by Flavio & Sons ((301) 598-8528) and Annie’s Hardware Store ((202) 726-2658). StoneWork has been a sponsor for the past six years. Annie’s

Hardware, a new business off Georgia Avenue at Upshur Street. Kudos to the Garden Tour planning

committee: Chairperson Gloria Owens, Beth Allaben, Cheryl Hamlin, Cynthia

and Sam Prather, Jeffrey Ross, and Photographer Ed Savwoir. A special thank you to the volunteers who staffed the ticket booth: Evon Ervin, Rosemary Reed Miller, Sheryl Scruggs, Emily Gumpert, and Clarence Cross.

Meet the Board Another installment in our continuing effort to give you a

chance to get to know the SPCA board members.

Alex McCants is enthused to join the SPCA board as a Delegate to the DC Federation of Citizens Asso-ciations. Alex works as a Senior Business Analyst on the State Department’s Refugee Admis-sions Program, and his son is a Pre-K student at Shepherd Elementary. Alex is

also a mem-b e r o f Northmin-ster Presby-t e r i a n Church and is currently the volunteer coordinator of the Shep-herd Park Ne ighbor-

dearly love. A second generation Washingto-nian, she is excited to join the board and volunteer-ed at the picnic this year. Paula is also the

Neighborhood Watch Block Captain for the 1300 block of Locust Road. Recently retired from DCPS, Paula began her career as a high school vis-ual arts teacher and served as the Director of Art Education for 19 years. As an Art Consultant, she worked with Zion Baptist Church, Blagden Avenue, to design, create, and install 28 themed stained glass panels. SPCA Community Service Awards At the picnic, we presented the

2012 SPCA Community Service Awards to those who have made ex-tra efforts to serve our community. The Business Supporter of the Year, which honors a business that has improved the quality of life in Shepherd Park, was given to Doggie Washerette and owner Ethel Taylor. Kathleen Sheekey was recognized as a Community Supporter for four years of service as co-coordinator of the Shepherd Elementary Early Read-ers Program. A Friend of Shepherd Park is

an individual, business or group out-side of Shepherd Park that has made special efforts to support our commu-nity, and this year we honored Andre Carley for his community advocacy and partnership with the SPCA on Georgia Ave projects, and Paul Sim-mons for 39 years of dedicated ser-vice to our community as a mail car-rier. The Public Safety award went to Alex McCants, who works to im-prove community safety as the volun-teer coordinator of the Shepherd Park Neighborhood Watch Program.

You could go to the movies and see "ParaNorman" or "Frankenweenie" or "Hotel Transylvania" in 3-D. Or, you could go to Shepherd field at twilight on Halloween and see real live ghosts and goblins and Spidermans and princesses!

The annual Shep-herd Park Halloween Parade starts at 6 pm sharp on Halloween (Wednesday, October 31, line up at 5:45 pm). Kids will get a head start on their treats as they walk a lap around the field. Then they fan out in the neighborhood for tricks and more treats.

An address list of neighbors giving treats

is distributed at the parade and on the neighborhood listserve. To make sure the Halloween candy you've bought gets dispersed, get your house on the list by emailing Mark Pattison at [email protected].

The ne ighbor-hood's annual house and pumpkin deco-rating contest (for bragging rights only) will take place the weekend before Hal-loween. If you want to be a contestant – or a judge – email Mark.
