Device description

Intended use / user indications

Intended use

Goudsmit sheet separators are designed to loosen/separate sticky or oily steel sheets.

The magnets force the sheets apart to make sure to lift one sheet at a time.

Damage to tool and die is prevented by eliminating accidentally double blank lifting.

The sheet separators are suitable for sheets of almost any length, width or shape,

including round and asymmetrical products.

The permanent magnetic power does not decrease and is guaranteed for several

decades.

The use of expensive compressed air systems to separate the steel sheets is no longer

necessary, as the permanent magnets will do the job at a much lower cost.

Use this device only for the above mentioned applications

Environmental demands

The sheet separator has a heavy casing around the magnet system, which means that no

special environmental demands are necessary.

Temperatures

Suited for outside temperatures of -20 °C to 40 °C.

Make sure that the magnet is not exposed to high temperatures, while this might cause

the magnetic power to decrease permanently. See product specifications for maximum

product temperatures.

The magnet is to be protected against higher temperatures than prescribed, because the

magnet might lose magnetic force permanently when exposed to high temperatures

Free space

The working space surrounding the sheet separator must be well marked out, to avoid any

danger for persons passing-by. The marking out must be provided with clear warnings

concerning the entrance of the working space.

Noise level

The noise level of the sheet separator is low.

Vibrations

The magnet is to be protected against strong external vibrations, because the magnet

might lose magnetic force permanently and or the brittle ceramic magnet material

might break.

Cleaning

Cleaning of the magnets should take place regularly,

9

Working principle

Working Principle

As steel sheets are placed against the sheet separator, the powerful magnetic field

automatically forces the sheets apart and separates them from one another. When the top

sheet is removed, the next sheet instantly moves up. As soon as the sheets are removed

from the separator, they are no longer magnetised. The permanent magnetic sheet

separators can also be supplied with a (pneumatic) turn on/off system. This is important

for automated production processes.

Construction

The sheet separator has a heavy casing around the magnet system, which means that no

special environmental demands are necessary. The construction of the magnet systems

make sure that the highest possible separation force is achieved with minimum size.

Available models

Goudsmit sheet separators are available in several models:

Permanent ferrite magnet system for the most common applications

Extra strong Neoflux® magnet system in a compact design to separate extremely oily

or sticky sheets.

Pneumatically controlled permanent Neoflux magnets that can be switched on/off by air

pressure.

Sheet separators for the automotive industry,

Installation examples

The sheet separators can be placed next to a stack of steel sheets in different ways, with 1

or 2 magnets at a time. Practice will show which placing method functions best. See

examples below.

10

Assembly examples of permanent and switchable sheet separators

Assembly is simple by using the tapped holes on the back of the sheet separators. The

arrows on the photo indicate the recommended transportation direction, in which the

plates can be best carried off after being separated by the sheet separator.

For smaller sheets the best is to place the sheet separator in the middle of the shortest

side.

Sheet separators that are place opposite of each other ensure that the sheets will float.

For an optimal effect the best is to place two sheet separators at the corner(s) of stacks of

large steel sheets

Application example 1

In the table you will find various technical data that apply to this calculation example. At

this workplace, steel sheets are manually placed in a press. The steel sheets are 900 mm

long and 600 mm wide. The sheet thickness is 3.0 mm, so we take sheet separators from

the series TBSP 03 that separate up to 4 mm. The sheets are oiled and stick to each other.

Under these circumstances. TBSP03 sheet separators have a recommended working

surface of 26 dm2. Sheet surface area: 9 x 6 = 54 dm2. Number of plate separators: 54

dm2 / 26 dm2 = 2 pieces. By placing the sheet separators opposite to each other the

plates float and they are easy to grip.

Pull sheet away in direction shown by the arrow.

11

Application example 2

In the table you will find various technical data of this calculation example. An automatic

manipulator feeds steel plates to a punching machine. The steel sheets are 2500 mm long

and 1250 mm wide. The sheet thickness is 2.2 mm, so we take the switchable sheet

separators TPSP, which separate up to 3 mm. The sheets are quite clean and only stick

slightly together. Under these circumstances TPSP sheet separators have a recommended

working area of 34 dm2. In most automated production processes, it is sufficient to spread

50% of the sheet. This is to ensure that only one plate is taken. Surface to be spread: 25

x 12.5 dm2 = 313 x 50% = 157 dm2. Number of sheet separators: 157 dm2 / 34 dm2 =

5 pieces. Placing two sheet separators at a corner ensures a powerful separation at that

point. The other sheet separators are distributed evenly on the adjacent sides of this

corner.

Pull sheet away in direction shown by the arrow.

Construction

Sheet separators come in many models and types. In this chapter some different types will

be shown.

TBSP and TGSP – standard permanent magnetic model

Standard permanent sheet separators come in 2 magnet types / -strengths: TBSP and TGSP

TBSP is built up with ferrite (Ferroxdure) magnets

TGSP is built up with Neodymium (Neoflux®) magnets

TBSP (Ferroxdure) magnets are cheaper and up to 100°C temperature-resistant, but

magnetically weaker then the TGSP (Neoflux®) magnets, which are more expensive and

only up to 60°C temperature-resistant.

TPSP – Pneumatically switchable model

Compressed air actuates the magnet system, which works as a pneumatic piston inside

the solid aluminium housing. A parallel guiding guarantees the plate magnet inside to

always move parallel in a robust way, so it will not get obstructed inside the housing.

Bigger versions work by a pneumatic cylinder whereby an internal magnet is actuated.

ensure that the device can be installed without risk.

Use only lifting/hoisting and transport equipment that is in good condition and never exceed

the safe working load of the equipment being used.

The weight of the device is stated on the identification plate on the device, placed on the

housing as a metal plate or a sticker.

Only remove the safety pin, fitted on some versions, after installation. Keep the pin in case

you need to transport the device again.

Dangers of strong magnetic fields.

The magnets on Sheet Separators can seriously and permanently injure.

Ferromagnetic objects will be attracted, if you are closer than 50 cm to the magnet.

Dangers of strong magnetic fields.

Do not stack or transport without non-magnetic spacers of at least 40mm.

Do not place on steel surfaces

Compressed air supply

On pneumatically actuated / adjustable sheet separators

The compressed air supply must be between 6 to 8 bar. Use 6mm air hoses and fittings.

15

Startup

Before startup, make sure that:

the device or installation has no damages or malfunctions;

all connections (electrical, mechanical, pneumatic) have been made properly;

the device or installation is placed and situated correctly;

all protective covers (if applicable) have been fitted correctly;

the device is thoroughly cleaned;

there are no other sources of danger present

on versions with the safety pin, remove it after installation but before use.

During startup, make sure that:

the device or installation has no damages or malfunctions;

16

Maintenance

Magnetic systems attract dust and Ferromagnetic particles. Regular cleaning is

essential. A clean magnet functions considerably better

All parts are best cleaned by pressurised air and/or soft cloth. Also it is possible to

deep clean with special cleaning fluids that do not harm the material. Ensure that

these fluids do not contaminate the product

Regularly check that all warning pictograms and the identification plate are present

at the correct locations on the device. If warning pictograms or the identification

plate should get lost or damaged, then immediately apply new ones to the original

locations.

Always inform operating personnel regarding planned inspections, maintenance, repairs or if

attending to breakdowns.

Malfunctions/Service

CAUTION!

Improper handling of the magnet device may lead to damages. Potential damage to body and or property! Any repair to GOUDSMIT magnet devices may be performed by qualified

personnel only. Be aware that permanent magnets attract ferromagnetic material with great

force when it gets in reach of the magnetic field danger of getting jammed!

Consult GOUDSMIT MAGNETIC SYSTEMS service

Malfunctions

In case of malfunctions, consult the following table in order to determine the cause of the

malfunction and its possible remedy. In case a specific malfunction can’t be found in the

table, consult the GOUDSMIT Magnetic Systems service.

Failure Possible cause Possible solution

Magnet does not separate sheets, or

separates them badly

Magnet is switched OFF or set to low magnet force

Switch ON and or set to higher magnet force

Sheets to be separated are too thick

Order a magnet with a higher separation capacity.

Maximum thickness 4 mm

The sheets to be separated are not or just slightly ferromagnetic

Check the not or badly separated sheets with a permanent magnet to determine whether the load is

attracted. - not attracted: the sheets cannot be separated with a (any) magnet - slightly attracted: possibly a magnet

with a higher capacity can do the

job, so contact Goudsmit for consultancy

The sheets are not placed correctly near/against the

separator

Place the sheets correctly (flat and even) against the separator
