Welcome toour second female sale!

Dear Friends,It is with great pleasure and excitement that we welcome you to our second female sale, “The Ladies Behind the Bull BusinessBrand.” Once again, this year we will be offering genetics from our Hereford, Angus, and Red Angus programs. We’ll sell springpairs, fall pairs, fall bred heifers, and some donors. Again this year we’re emphasizing females, with most of the fall-calvingcows and bred heifers carrying heifer calf pregnancies.

It is rewarding for our family to see that many of the purchases from last year went on and were highlights for their new owner’sprogram. Many of the matings this year will do the same, with top end genetics throughout the offering. We utilize intense AIand ET programs that focus on proven genetics, mating large groups of females to the same sire, adding consistency everychance we get. When most people are asleep, we’re working cows, planning matings, and doing all the extra things necessaryto build a herd of functional cattle with performance, EPDs, fertility, soundness, udder quality, and the list goes on!

“/S Cow Families” are what built our operation, and we continue to advance our cow herd with sons and daughters of thesegreat lines of cattle. We are proud of the consistency we are creating in our operation and are sure that you’ll be able to addunique genetics to your herd from ours. The Lot 1 cow is one that is hard to let go. She is as near perfect as you can make one.Her progeny will be sale highlights in the years to come. The Lot 11 heifer very closely resembles the high seller from last year(Lot 19) that went on to the Hereford Junior National just a month later and won her division. The lead lots in the Angus sectionstem from the same cow family that produced the high selling donor in last year’s sale. This cow family has done a lot for us andwill continue to do so.

As many of you know, we’ve built our program around selling bulls and continue to have some exceptional ranches as customersyear after year. These commercial operations rival purebred customers for our bulls. We are fortunate to have second and thirdgenerations purchasing bulls for their commercial ranches. Some of our top bull genetics tie into the females in this year’s sale.Our high selling Angus bull comes from the same line as our top Angus females in last year’s sale as well as this year’s offering.Our Hereford and Red Angus females are full of the same genetics that topped our bull sale.

Dear Friends and Fellow Breeders,

Welcome to the second annual Shaw Cattle Co. Female Production Sale. This event is an

opportunity to share in the genetic base of a herd that has provided bulls to the top

operations in the Western states and beyond through 44 consecutive bull sales. They say that

the first sale is the easiest, and the second sale truly measures success; I feel confident that

once you see this set of females, you will agree that the depth of quality exceeds the

tremendous offering that sold in the Inaugural Shaw Female Sale a year ago.

First, I would like to again extend a special thank you to the Shaw Family and to Ron Shurtz for

allowing me to assist them in the marketing of this tremendous set of females. The hospitality

that has been shown to me in the time I have spent working with them prior to the sale is

greatly appreciated.

This family operation is four generations deep, and if you are not familiar with the Shaw Cattle

Co. program, I encourage you to come and see what they are all about. Shaw Cattle Co. ranks

among the top three herds in registrations among Hereford breeders year in and year out, and

their combined herd of Hereford, Angus and Red Angus is the 14th largest seedstock operation

in the United States. While the size of their herd is impressive, I believe it is the depth of quality

that is their most outstanding accomplishment. By keeping virtually every female they have

produced over the span of three decades, the Shaw family has been able to cull extensively

and keep only the best from each crop, thus resulting in a young set of matrons that excel in

phenotype, maternal traits, individual performance and numerical quality. Simply put, if a cow

doesn’t do her job here, she doesn’t stay…she makes a trip to the sale barn.

Regardless of the goals of your operation or the breed you prefer, I am confident there are

females in this sale that will suit your needs. The genetics represented in each breed are

second to none. This offering was selected based on the calf at their side or the calf they are

carrying being a female, so you are going to have an opportunity to share in the very best.

The “stuff ” legacies are built onThe Shaw name is rich in cattle history! It all began in 1946 when Tom Shaw returnedto his home in McCall, Idaho, after serving in the Navy and, as promised, was given abelated graduation gift from a neighbor: the pick of the heifers from his herd. Withhis new bride, Mary, at his side, Tom chose the heifer that would be the foundationof the Hereford herd and the start of Shaw Hereford Ranch. In 1959, Tom and Marypurchased the current “home place” near Notus, Idaho, and moved from the originalShaw homestead, along with their three children. As Tom and Mary grew their herd,performance was at the forefront of everything they did.

Over the years, Tom became well known in the Hereford breed and was a pioneer inmany aspects of the cattle industry. Tom started the first Performance Bull Test Cen-ter in the Northwest in cooperation with the University of Idaho in 1969. Cattlemenfrom all over the Northwest and Canada enrolled bulls in the program. Tom was alsoinstrumental in developing the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF), setting the stan-dard for beef cattle performance. He served on the founding BIF board from 1977through 1980. Tom served on the National Beef Board, National Cattlemen’s Associ-ation Board, Idaho Cattlemen’s Association (ICA) Board, and the American Hereford As-sociation Board (AHA). He also served as president of ICA and AHA. Tom was inductedinto the American Hereford Association Hall of Fame in 2009.

Tom and Mary’s youngest son, Greg, “officially”joined the operation after graduationin 1968, and he and Cleo were married in 1970. Eighteen years later, in 1988, thecows were split into three herds: one for Tom and Mary, a second for Greg’s brotherand family, and the third for Greg and Cleo. Greg and Cleo remained on the originalhome place and created Shaw Cattle Company. It is here that they raised their threechildren, Tucker, Sam and Jaime, and carried on the tradition of raising reputable per-formance cattle.

In 1990, Greg and Cleo took the opportunity to diversify and purchased registeredRed Angus cows to raise alongside the Hereford cattle. In 1996, Black Angus cattlewere added to the herd. Today Shaw Cattle Company maintains over 1,500 registeredcows encompassing all three breeds.

Greg has followed in his dad’s footsteps, continuing to raise performance cattle thatare known throughout the country, while also taking the opportunity to improve theindustry as a whole. Greg has served on a number of boards, including the Idaho Cat-tlemen’s, Idaho Purebred Council, and the American Hereford Association, where healso served as president. While serving on the AHA Board of Directors, Greg was in-fluential in developing and implementing “Whole Herd Reporting.”

Greg and Cleo’s two sons and their families have both returned to the ranch. Sam re-turned in 1999 after graduating from the University of Idaho. He and his wife, Janel,are raising their three girls on the ranch. Tucker returned to the ranch with his wife,Angie, in 2003. Tucker and Angie are raising their five children on the ranch. Greg andCleo’s daughter, Jaime, husband Kelly, and two girls live in Eugene, Oregon, and enjoyhelping out on the ranch when they can. Family is important to us, and we are proudto have our fourth generation of Shaws on the ranch, learning the craft of raising cat-tle just like Great Grandpa Shaw!

We lost the cornerstones of the ranching family in the fall of 2010 with the passingof Grandpa and Grandma Shaw (Tom and Mary). Their dedication to each other, theirfamily, and the cattle business is the “stuff” legacies are built on. We miss their day-to-day presence but look forward to carrying on the ranching tradition they startedand passing it on to the next generation.
