About the How to Survive as a Shark

Facts & Opinions Sort

How to Survive as a Shark by Kristen Foote

is an amusing and informative picture

book about sharks. It is told from the

perspective of a grown great white shark

teaching newly born shark pups. Through

the fictionalized lessons, the pups learn

about great white shark life cycles, how

they move, what they eat, and more.

Using This Product

After reading How to Survive as a Shark, discuss perspectives and how

learning facts can change perspectives.

Here is an example.

In the middle of the book, humans are called “scurvy dogs” that are not good to eat and are dangerous predators for the sharks, killing thousands

a year. On the other side, humans tend to think of sharks as dangerous.

The facts on the page show the truth, by sharing about bee stings and

shark kills.

Use this as a starting point for recognizing how facts can help change

opinions. Then, use the activity to expound upon those difference. Can

your students spot which sentences express opinions about sharks and

which ones state the facts they learned from the book?

Two Options

The activity is provided twice.

First, the activity is provided with black

and white sentence strips, a page

labeled “facts” and “opinions”, and fact/opinions envelopes. The students

can cut the sentence strips, glue the

envelop edges (only the edges) to their

pages, and then sort the sentences into

the correct envelopes. See the image to

the right for an idea on the final

product. Of course, students can also

color as desired.

The activity is also provided with color

cards and sorting mats to make this

activity into a center or group activity.
