• 31 volunteered-many more were on the list

Lessons learned

• Getting media involved is very tricky, plans change min by min

• Having a great partner is key

• The opening event with kids was a fun additional event

• IPads were hard to manage for the clinic

The interactive items are a big hit with all ages and I see adults “reading the walls”…that’s what we hoped would happen. Georgia Section Member Demographics in 2009:

2000 members: 75% belong to ~350 chemical businesses

305 businesses with < 49 employees; 59 businesses with >49 employees

but… only 6 members were part of the Small Chemical Business Division

Eventually led to the formation of a “Chemical Businesses Group”

Chemical Businesses Group

Vision:

o Self-sustaining group of the Georgia section

o Collaborative affiliate of the Small Chemical Businesses (SCHB) Division

o Networking (B2B, Personal)

o Resource information sharing, employment opportunities

o Mechanism for members to reconnect with the ACS

“Innovative Project Grant” (IPG) was written in 2012 to fund inaugural event held November 9th 2012 – Chemical Businesses “Showcase”

Local Chemical Businesses “Showcase”

The Event:

o Held in conjunction with the Georgia section’s 3rd bi-annual Academia-Industry Forum titled “Creation of the Chemical Entrepreneur” at Kennesaw State University (KSU)

o 80+ attendees (vs. target of 50) total

o 18 companies with exhibit tables for the business “showcase”

o Breakfast and lunch were provided

o Networking opportunities with academia-industry forum attendees

o Total cost was ~ $ 1,700.00 (defrayed by IPG & KSU venue for free)

o Very positive member response via survey with strong alignment between member expectations and the event

Local Chemical Businesses “Showcase”

Benefits:

Stimulated interest in the ACS, the local section, and the SCHB Division

Established a firm baseline for future events like it

Inspired an all day session titled “New Business Opportunities for Chemical Businesses” at SERMACS 2013 in Atlanta

Provided a basis for introducing ourselves to the Georgia Economic Development Department

Recognition: Corporation Associates - “Outstanding Local Section Industry Event”

Local Sections Activities Committee - “Best Activity or Program Stimulating Member Involvement”

Small Chemical Businesses Division - “Outstanding Collaboration Between a Local Section and a Division”

Four major objectives

6 leaders ,13 students attended

(i) to foster leadership in the chemical sciences

(iii) to forge synergy across local sections and increase collaboration,

(iv) to provide students with strong mentors who possess leadership capabilities.

(ii) to lead future students towards leadership potential within ACS

Results

Students who have training will be encouraged to take on more leadership roles within our sections

HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS1. Program SEED: >60 students conducted

summer research at neighboring colleges & universities; 26 out of total of 54 students presented at 2012-National ACS Meeting; 5 ACS scholars; 5 Chemistry Ambassadors; One Bill Gates scholar

2. Chemagination: 27 posters on 4 categories were presented at St. John’s University; First place winners were sent to MARM 2012.

3. Chemistry Olympiad: 338 students with 20 qualifying to the National Exam level @ Adelphi University (5 Honors; 2 High Honors)

4. Brooklyn H.S. Brooklyn Chemistry Day: Annual Brooklyn H.S. Chemistry Day (123 students) involved chemistry magic demonstrations & research lab tours in neighboring colleges and universities.

5. 17th Annual H.S.Research Poster Session:Annual poster competition was held @ St. Joseph’s College (70 posters, 77 students) with college alumni attending and serving as judges who gave certificates.

6. Achievement Awards to Long Island and Brooklyn H.S. Students: 55 awardees were given wooden plaque certificates at two different dinner events with a keynote speaker talk and parents present.

8. H..S. Chemistry Teachers Topical Group: 8 meetings, average 50 H.S. teachers attending
