Maintain Site-BasedStormwater Detention Systems
Issue:Site-based stormwater diversion anddetention systems must be properly maintainedto be a reliable component of the citys storm-water infrastructure.
Recommendation:Establish maintenance standards for site-basedstormwater systems, and require property owners toverify compliance.

Encourage InnovativeStormwater Practices
Issue:Modern stormwater control systems incorporateboth civil engineering strategies, such asunderground detention tanks, and landscape-based strategies, such as green roofs and naturallandscaping. New York Citys regulations, however,do not properly account for the impact oflandscape-based strategies.
Recommendation:Revise stormwater regulations to account forlandscape-based strategies.

But what about...
Embodied energy?
Product lifecycle?
Materiality?
Construction sequence?
What about all the aspects of the element that dealwith time and not just space?
While the RainRoof started to address some metricsof real application (structural and water weight), itfocused on adaptability of the element to a wide range
of contexts without considering well enough how theelement would actually be used in those contexts.

ShadeStructure: Design Development
All pieces of the new element use standard dimensionallumber or standard plywood sheets.
The pieces lock togetherwith circular inserts.Optionally, fabric can bestretched across the topfor additional shading, or todirect water into tubes thatrun through the center ofthe assembled fins.

Fins + Louvers
The fins are cut from one 4x8 plywood sheet, whilethe louvers use standard dimensional lumber. Thesizes and lengths of the louvers can be changed, ascan certain aspects of the fins.
The entire assembly is easy to manufacture, assem-ble, and dis-assemble; creates shade; and contributesto an interesting outdoor environment.

Fins + Louvers
The assembly of fins + louvers can be used in groupsof 3, 4, 5, 6, or 8 to form different patterns of shadingand walkways. This is the 4-piece assembly.

ShadeStructure: Next Steps: Grid Development
The goal is to deploy the grouped fin assemblies ingrids that adapt to the number of fins chosen - differentpatterns are required for the different assemblies.
