Then a few sentences later (25:17) we are again instructed not to defraud one another; but this sentence ends with the phrase you shall fear your G‑d”. Why? Rashi explains that the first verse refers to financial fraud. The second verse forbids verbal fraud— like speaking hurtful words or giving bad advice. That is why the second verse adds but you shall fear your G‑d,lest a person say: Who will know that my intention was to do him evil? Hashem surely knows. Adds Rabbi Simcha Bunim of Pshischa that legally, it is only forbidden to defraud another person but we must do better and go beyond the letter of the law, and take care not to delude ourselves either. Rabbi’s Message

In this week’s Parsha of Behar we find laws which demand honesty. The Torah first prohibits defrauding anyone in purchase or sale arrangements (25:14). Then a few sentences later (25:17) we are again instructed not to defraud one another; but this sentence ends with the phrase “you shall fear your G‑d”. Why? Rashi explains that the first verse refers to financial fraud. The second verse forbids verbal fraud— like speaking hurtful words or giving bad advice. That is why the second verse adds “but you shall fear your G‑d,” lest a person say: Who will know that my intention was to do him evil? Hashem surely knows. Adds Rabbi Simcha Bunim of Pshischa that legally, it is only forbidden to defraud another person but we must do better and go beyond the letter of the law, and take care not to delude ourselves either. We must be aware of our talents and utilize them to the fullest.
