Headmaster’s Scholars of the Week Week 7 (ending 17th June)

I have set up a new notice board directly outside my study which gives details of my Scholars of the Week. Form teachers regularly send to me pupils who have completed an impressive assignment. I am able to talk through the successful work with the pupil, have them read to me and listen to their ideas for further de-velopment. I then reward them with an appropriate sticker and stars. This notice board will allow me to provide public recognition of their efforts. I shall publish each week’s ‘scholars’ in the SG Messenger:

Dexter Weir Excellent maths work

Emmeline Liddle Excellent Creative Writing

Edith McNair Excellent Creative Writing

The House test-tubes have been installed in the front hall in order for us all to raise money for SASP, the South Afri-can charity, which is dedicated to supporting children’s education. The accompanying table indicates what we might aim for in our collection…

Sport Chess Match v Junior King’s—Match Reporter, Piers Courage On Tuesday, 13 chess players from Spring Grove went to Junior King’s for a chess tournament and then we started and everyone played 2 or 3 games. At the end it was a draw, so Mr Cheney played their gap student for a tie-breaker and Mr Cheney won! The man of the match was me, 2 wins and a draw and well done Benny for 2 wins and a loss. Thank you Mrs Jones and Mr Cheney for taking us. U11 Girls’ Kwik Cricket tournament at Ashford School—Match Reporter, Matylda Reilly On Wednesday the U11 girls took part in a tournament against Ashford, Kent College, St Faith’s and Claremont. In our first match we restricted Ashford to just 7 runs whilst we scored 60. In our second match we played Kent College and we fielded first. They were very good batters and finished with a smashing 70 runs so we were determined to beat them. Izzy and Daisy went first and were caught out 4 times but still we managed to get 3 runs. The final score was 13 runs with Kent College having 70 runs. Next, we played St Faith’s. They batted first and scored 32 runs. We came in strong with me and Betsey and scored 7 runs and no outs. The final score was SG 28 and St Faith’s 32. Our last match was against Claremont. We fielded first and me, Betsey, Amelia and Gigi all caught them out and they ended with 28 runs. It was our turn to bat and we batted very well and scored lots of runs. We finished with 35 runs. We finished the tournament in 3rd place. Well done to everyone. Thank you to Mr Cheney and Miss Drury for taking us. Well played SG. U9 A&B Rounders v Lorenden (A) On Thursday, the U9 A Team played against Lorenden. We fielded first and did some good bowling. Lorenden, however, had some smashers and played really well. Our catching and throwing was not at our best so they scored 5½ rounders. Then it was our turn to bat, we smashed the ball as hard as we could. The last ball, Emmy whacked the ball and scored a whole rounder leading us up to 6½ rounders. Well done SG! Amelia got the Lady of the Match (well done) Thank you Mrs Langford and Miss de Ambrosis for taking us. B Team—Match Reporters, Abigail Weir & Elvie Kingham The B Team played against Lorenden too on Thursday The weather was fine and we got off to a good start. We started off fielding. Elvie tried her hardest and was excellent at 2nd base. Everyone tried their best and

managed to get a few people out. Phoebe was doing very good bowl-ing. Then the time came to do some batting. Tabitha started of batting and we found out they were good at fielding. We all tried hard but it wasn’t enough. We couldn’t win. The final scores were 5½ rounders to SG and 8 to Lorenden.

U9 Boys’ Cricket v St Faith’s We lost the toss and the game began. We had to bat first.. We batted well and scored lots of runs. The best pair was Piers and Seb. Spring Grove then fielded and St Faith’s batted well too. The score was 229 to us and 235 to St Faith’s. Man of the Match was Sebastian Fairchild. Issah ponders another move during a chess club practice session.

Spring Grove’s Family Music CourseSpring Grove’s Family Music Course

Monday 22nd —Thursday 25th August 2016 9.30—4.00pm each day

Overseen by our Director of Music, Hilary Jones, the music course is aimed at orchestral musicians who

will be keen to learn and develop their skills through the week. There are already a variety of

Kent-based orchestral courses for advanced school-age musicians. We think the Spring Grove course

will offer something new:

Children of all ages can sign up Confident Grade 1 players up to and beyond Grade 5. We can adapt

parts to suit abilities. Children from any school learning any orchestral instrument are wel-

come. Adults can join too…

It is possible for children to bring an adult along with them! An ideal opportunity for parents who might once have learnt an instrument

and lacked the courage to play! Course Tutors:

Bill McConnell (conductor/arranger), Hilary Jones (strings), Bill Jones (brass)

Pastoral Care: Sue McConnell and Hilary Jones The course will incorporate:

a mixture of group rehearsals for the different instrumental sections

a variety of orchestral styles including jazz, folk and classical supervised break time activities including swimming and

outdoor team games

Drinks and refreshments will be provided but packed lunches

will need to be brought each day. The course will end with a concert at 3.30pm on Thursday,

25th August to which friends and family are invited.

Family Camp Night (Saturday, 9th July) The Spring Grove Family Camp Night has become one of those fantastic school traditions which has grown in popularity over the years: it is run entirely by the par-ents who choose to camp overnight on the school play-ing field following our Sports and Prize Day. Invariably, it is a happy occasion when families can enjoy a lovely get-together, play games and a barbecue. Two concerns have grown in recent years: the growing popularity of the event with older unattached Spring-grovians and the security of the school. As this is not a school event, those who attend are responsible for the behaviour of the children who attend. Therefore, this year the event will be open to Spring Grove families as usual but I have also booked a security officer to remain a presence on site who will ensure that the school buildings remain secure and that children play safely and with due consideration for others. In order to im-plement this, there will be a £10 charge per family that registers and attends. Looking forward to a great Family Camp Night on Sat-urday, 9th July 2016

A celebration of nature and place through literature 18th – 19th June 2016

Boldshaves Gardens, Kent

“It is a thrill to see The Wealden Literary Festival taking root and flourishing. With its em-phasis on the natural world, its commitment to children and to community, and its vision

of getting people outdoors and hands-on with nature, as well as reading and talking about it, it strikes me as a hugely hopeful and valuable new event. Long may it grow!”

LOOK WHAT’S HAPPENING IN SG EXTRA IN THE SUMMER TERM

With the summer afternoons here, we shall be in the garden whenever

possible making the most of the potentially bright warm weather. So we won't be doing particular tasks on set days, but there will still many

things taking place.

PLEASE TAKE A LOOK BELOW

The children will be making their tea inside and we hope to eat outside on many afternoons. There is a perfect shaded area towards the back

of the garden, ideal for a picnic. The children will love it !

We will make aeroplanes, flying saucers. kites, parachutes, bubbles and anything children can fly, chase and have fun with. Various outside

games too.

Should weather not permit outside play, we will be making edible treats that the children enjoy as well as art/craft activities in the

Nursery area.

Even though no specific dates and activities are listed this term, as we are relying on the weather, it would still be advisable to book children in with the office the day before at the latest please. This enables the

correct amount of food to be available for the teas.

S G Extra is available Monday through Friday 4pm - 6pm. Please come along and join us.

If you child wished to attend, please book in advance.

Looking forward to seeing you in the new term.

The Bees Some of us have learnt some new things about bees this week. On Wednesday, a healthy local hive swarmed and a queen and her thousands of workers arrived at SG and took up residence in front of the school. On Thursday morning, they elected to relocate to the chimney at the top of the school and numerous scouts found their way into the headmaster’s study. A fire in the hearth did little to deter them, it seemed, but having tried again after the end of school, the swarm returned to their original tree near the pond. On Friday afternoon, Mike Cox, Maths teacher and Assis-tant Housemaster at King’s School, Canterbury arrived and carefully found the queen, placed her in his large red box where she was joined by her protecting workers and took them away to join one of his hives in Canterbury.
