Sexual Problems In Diabetic Patients

Sexual Problems In Diabetic Patients

Sex is an important and pleasurable aspect in any relationship and an unsatisfying sex life leads to a

number of problems between couples. It can cause feelings of guilt, rejection and dissatisfaction which

ruin a relationship further. What makes things worse is that both men and women in the relationship

find it very hard to talk about their sexual problems with their partners.

Sexual problems are especially more common in those suffering from diabetes. Diabetes causes severe

damage to nerve endings, blood vessels and the nervous system because of which blood flow is reduced

and there is a loss of sensation in the sex organs.

Diabetes also causes heart problems, depression, injuries, which also lead to sexual dysfunction in both

men and women. Men and women face different kinds of sexual problems that need to be dealt with

before they cause irreparable damage. Stress, smoking, excessive alcohol intake, drugs and fatigue play

their part in a dissatisfied sex life.

Sexual dysfunction in men is broadly categorised into - erectile dysfunction (ED), ejaculatory

dysfunction and impaired libido or sexual desire. Many men face the problem of not having an erection

a few times in their life but if it happens with alarming frequency, then the condition is called ED

(previously called impotence). Most men over the age of 60 experience erectile dysfunction but the

condition affects diabetic men 10-15 years in advance. It is important to visit a doctor without being

embarrassed to get evaluated so that the problem can be identified and a solution sought. There are

also a number of medical solutions to rectify erectile dysfunction minus any side effects.

Sexual problems in diabetic women is not a well-researched topic but it is known that diabetic women

also have trouble during intercourse, problems with arousal, feeling desire and orgasm. The blame is laid

at emotional and lifestyle choices made and no proper treatment is available except for lubricants.

Female sexual dysfunction is slowly being taken seriously and therapy is also being offered for those

needing it.

Both men and women must do their best to keep their sugar levels in check so that they can avoid

feeling embarrassed, maintain their self-confidence and manage to have a healthy relationship.

In any case, it is essential to recognise the root of the sexual problems so that the right support can be

sought.
