HeLLO!

Hi and welcome to the latest issue of Severn magazine.

Whilst we’re still enduring tough times throughout the UK Shrewsbury still haslots to look forward to, with it’s new Riverside development scheme planned forthe town centre, which you can read about on pg 6. Despite the downturn Shrewsbury still has developing and new local businesses popping up all the timeand making a success in the area. Read about just a few of these ‘Newbiz’ on pg 4.

We also have our regular mix of features including Martin the Town Crier, thismonth He covers Pride Hill – a place we all use on a regular basis but do we knowthe history of this interesting area? Also we feature a local company called Space to Sew, read about the fantastic work they are doing in contributing to the‘Dress a Girl’ charity, who make clothing to send out to Africa! Learn how you toocan get involved.

I hope you enjoy this issue and please remember if you’re organising a local eventor have an interesting story to tell about Shrewsbury or its people and you wouldlike our readers to hear about it, please get in touch.

Hope to see you all soon…

In a b∫d move to improve thevπalπy and viab∏πy of the entiretown as a visπor de◊ination, the

owners of the Pride H∏l, Darwinand Riverside shopping centres areintending to inve◊ an impressive£150 m∏lion into the transformationof shopping in Shrewsbury. They are proposing a major revamp that w∏l for the fir◊ time, link all threecentres in a cohesive manner and enhance Shrewsbury’s shopping heart.

The proposed redev≤opment w∏lregenerate the three individual andoutdated shopping centres into amodern and attra±ive √ace to shop, visπ and work. The scheme w∏l see the dem∫πion of the exi◊ing

Previous √ans to regenerate thethree shopping centres have fa∏eddue to a la∞ of financial realism –however according to the currentowners of the sπes, their proposalsare based on sound financial appraisals.New Riverside w∏l d≤iver new, largeshop unπs which aim to attra± high-qualπy r≥a∏ers that are not already present in Shrewsbury, tocom√ement the town’s ◊rong se±orof independently owned businesses.

D≥a∏ed √ans have recently beenunve∏ed providing an idea of what ison the horizon for Shrewsbury as a

Modern r≥a∏ unπs w∏l attra±new r≥a∏ers to Shrewsbury and h≤pensure that the area is a successfulr≥a∏ de◊ination in the future, boo◊ing consumer ∆ending acrossthe town. Beautiful river boatWhen ◊anding by the W≤sh bridge

and ¬otogra¬ing the Theatre at duskπ’s a small leap of the imagination to see a ≈eek, ∏luminated river boatgliding s∏ently down the Severn. Itappears quπe beautiful through mylens – look at the resulting ¬otogra¬and judge for yours≤ves. If that’s not a boat I’ll eat my proverbial hat!

Beauty is in the eye…Of course not everybody sees π

that way. When the bu∏ding was fir◊con◊ru±ed the design was a lπtlecontroversial and attra±ed more thanπs fair share of crπicism. Indeed, in2009 the magazine ‘Bu∏ding Design’nominated the bu∏ding for the awardof the ‘Carbuncle Cup’, given to uglybu∏dings in the UK. Fortunat≤y π

AlterationWhere mo◊ peo√e draw the line

is adding or subtra±ing obje±s –‘altering’ the image. Removing carsand peo√e for exam√e or perhapsre√acing the sky wπh one shot onanother day are all exam√es. Thistakes quπe a bπ of pra±ise to bedone w≤l. Of course f∏m makers dothis all the time wπh motion pi±uresand π’s becoming more and moredifficult to know what’s real andwhat’s not! You have to ask yours≤fwhat the image is going to be used for.

If π is for recording events like newscoverage ≥c then images should not be altered. For entertainment orpersonal uses then there is less concern and in fa± π’s all part of theart of digπal ¬otogra¬y.

I altered the image of the ba∞ of the Theatre. Although I like theway the new bu∏ding surrounds the∫d chap≤, I didn’t like the trafficb∫lard right in front of the rear entrance. So I removed π to makethe image more √easing to the eye! Hope you like π. ∞

didn’t win, that honour went to thenew Liverpo∫ Ferry Terminal. Thisgœs to show that beauty is clearly inthe eye of the beh∫der.

Using PhotoshopI wanted the ¬otogra¬ to show

the Theatre in the be◊ light possibleand therefore resorted to using AdobePhotoshop to enhance the appearance.

Many puri◊s argue that usingdigital image edπing software, likePhotoshop, is a form of cheating thatoften makes the ¬otogra¬ look unnatural. This argument has ragedfor some years now, and peo√e cang≥ quπe hot under the c∫lar about π.I com√≥≤y disagree.

EnhancementIn the good ∫d days of f∏m

¬otogra¬y dev≤opers resorted toall manner of darkroom tri∞s wπhchemicals to wring every la◊ ounce of drama out of ¬otos formagazines and new∆apers. UsingPhotoshop to enhance digπal ¬otosis really not much different.

A camera is a fairly basic to∫compared to the qualπy of thehuman eye and any extra h≤p thatcan make an image more like theway you see π in real life has got to be good. Changing the contra◊,sharpening the focus, saturating the c∫our ≥c are all valid ways toimprove an image. This is called ‘enhancement’. The ¬otogra¬ of the front of the Theatre has been enhanced ≈ightly and now you cansee right into the bu∏ding whenblown up large.

David was qui∞ly found gu∏ty ofmany crimes including commπtingmurder on a Palm Sunday and being atraπor again◊ the Crown. Sonext time you park ∏legally you havebeen warned!

Another famous body to be puton di∆lay at the High Cross was thatof Henry Percy or Hot∆ur as he wasknown and this happened after theBattle of Shrewsbury in 1403 whenHot∆ur was k∏led and, although hisbody was taken to Whπchurch andburied there, King Henry orderedthat he be dug up and put on di∆layat the High Cross before he too washung, drawn and quartered and hishead journeyed down to London tobe put on a ◊ake on London Bridge, gruesome ◊uµ indeed!

So once Llew≤len had died Davidh≤d the reins unt∏ he was capturedby Edward’s s∫diers and broughtinto Shrewsbury.

King Edward wanted to overthrowthe W≤sh once and for all so ratherthan bringing David to London, whichwould take a wh∏e, the King orderedhis entire court to move to Shrewsburyand ordered twenty main towns inthe Country to send two of theirdeputies and each sheriµ of the land

Could hypnosis provide the solution for you?

All too often we try to achieve goals such as weightloss, changing habits and behaviours or dealing withemotions and we repeatedly fall at the first or secondfence. The reason for this can be an underlying, unacknowledged problem which prevents asuccessful outcome.

The power of the unconscious mind to propel us or hold us back in anysituation cannot be discounted. For instance there is no logical reason why weshould be afraid to travel by air. It has been shown to be one of the safestmethods of traveling. However many otherwise balanced and 'normal' peopleare gripped by a fear of this everyday task. This and other types of fear/phobia,behaviours and emotions can be readily helped with hypnotherapy.

Maria has been successful in helping clients to overcome these perceivedobstacles for a number of years. Before training to be a hypnotherapist sheenjoyed a successful career, spanning more than thirty years, as nurse inclinical practice and latterly NHS management.

Her enduring fascination with the mind and body connection led her toundertake study with the Contemporary College of Therapeutics based inLondon and has since been using a wide range of techniques. She now seesclients at Cedar House Clinic, Shrewsbury Business Park and helps people witha wide range of conditions. She is registered with the General HypnotherapyRegister, Complementary Natural Health Council.
