then began π’s many changes unt∏we come to todays owners.

Leading in the opposπe dire±ionfrom the Square is Grope lane. Whyis π called Grope Lane? Yep, you’veguessed!! Loads of towns in theCountry had a Grope Lane but mo◊of them have changed the name to Green Lane or Grape Lane but wein Shrewsbury r≥ain our originalname, Hooray!! All the Grope Lanesmentioned were used mainly for onetrade, pro◊πution and π was bigbusiness in the medieval days ofcourse. At the bottom of the Lane wenow have the Co◊a Coµee shop butin the 1780’s the bu∏ding was knownas The Globe public house beforechanging π’s name to The Cross Keys

OYEZ! OYEZ! OYEZ!

Leading away from theSquare are two majorshutts, Gull≥ Passage

and Grope Lane. Fir◊ of all aque◊ion, what’s the diµerenceb≥ween a shutt and a passage?Answer, nothing. Before theVi±orian times these smalllanes were known as shuttsbut because of the thinking ofour great Vi±orians this namewas deemed to be toodi◊a◊eful, so they renamedthem passages. During themiddle ages a ◊ream led fromthe pond in the Square downto the river and the name for such a ◊ream was ‘G∫ate’ and at the sπe near to were π conne±s wπh Mard∫ Head used to ◊and theGull≥ Inn. So did the pub take π’sname from the shutt or the shutt takeπ’s name from the pub, you decide.

The Gull≥ Inn is now known asThe H∫e in the Wall but The Gull≥was here in 1528 and over the nextcou√e of hundred years was theheadquarters of numerous trav≤ling√ayers groups, and also the Mayorand Counc∏lors m≥ there at times. In the 1600’s they even had a tenniscourt! In the mid 1700’s a serious firede◊royed many bu∏dings in the areaof Mard∫ Head, and The Gull≥ wasone of the bu∏dings sever≤y damaged,π was s∫d some 6 years later and

around 1820 and then enteringinto many name changes fromaround 1910.

Next time you walk upGrope Lane ju◊ pause for awh∏e and look at the bu∏dersmarks on the timbers of the∫d Cross Keys. All the timberhouses bu∏t in town wereoriginally put tog≥her in thefore◊ where the timber wasf≤led to make sure π wouldall fit, once the carpenter washappy he would mark eachtimber to t≤l his workerswhere each one had to go.Mo◊ of the time these marksare on the inside but as thiswas an inn do you think thecarpenter was paid in ale on a‘drink as you go’ basis?

It’s a bπ confusing becausethere was another Cross KeysInn dire±ly opposπe, whereStarbu∞s now ◊ands, andthis was here b≥ween 1780and 1820, ◊range or what?

Halfway up Grope Lane, where the rubbish bin now

◊ands, used to be St. Martins Chap≤and π is b≤ieved that under thischap≤ was one of the three Plaguepπs that we had in the town. Around2,000 of the 9,500 Shrewsbury f∫kwho succumbed to the Bla∞ Deathare thought to be buried in the pπ butsadly all traces of the chap≤ are longgone. There are some lov≤y individualshops in Grope Lane that are w≤lworth a visπ but take heart, none aretrading in you know what! ∞

The ¬oto of an evening fisherman, taken in Calais, looks good becausethe subje± is posπioned on the lefthand vertical. His foot◊eps in thesand leading from the corner of the¬oto also look good but what ruinsthis shot is the horizon roughly in

the centre of pi±ure. Because thesecond fishing rod was so high π wasimpossible to crop out the sky andmake the horizon two thirds of theway up the pi±ure.

If you’re shooting landscapes youcan √ace the sky in the top horizontalthird, obje±s like mountains or thesea in the middle third and nearbyland in the bottom third. This is notan exa± science and the componentsonly need to be √aced roughly in thecorre± √ace.

baby gœs in the middle of the frame– that’s where your camera focusesright? For some reason the ¬otodœsn’t look that great even if π isonly a keepsake to remember themoment by. This is because imageswπh the subje± √aced sma∞ in themiddle look dull and unintere◊ing.

Painters have known this for years, ever since the days when Greek arti◊sfir◊ discovered the concept andwrote about π. Subje±s ju◊ look somuch b≥ter when they’re oµ centre.

It’s rather a sim√e rule that canbe ap√ied eas∏y to both portraπs ofpeo√e and landscapes. It’s called theRule of Thirds.

Basically, if you divide a sceneinto thirds – horizontally and/or vertically – then you have a way ofmaking a composπion much moreintere◊ing. There are many ways ofusing the rule. For exam√e whentaking portraπs, √ace your subje±swhere the vertical lines are, or wherethe lines interse±. A single person◊anding in a fi≤d, for exam√e, canbe √aced where the left or right handline is but not in the centre. EMPLOYMENT LAW

Ra∏way companies began to purchasecanals across the country from private operators, closing the canals and in mo◊ cases, using the former canals as a ready-made route in which to lay tra∞s.

The ShrewsburyCanal was o∂ciallyabandoned in 1944,when maintenance of the waters and associated land ceased,

though peo√e ◊∏l managed to usethe canal up unt∏ the early 1950s.

Wh∏◊ the canal has ∆ent approximat≤y 60 years hidden awayamong◊ Shrewsbury’s rapiddev≤opment, the Shrewsbury andNewport Canals Tru◊ is on a missionto see what mu◊ sur≤y be one ofour town’s shining jew≤s, broughtba∞ into the heart of the town.

It w∏l be a long-term proje± andthere w∏l be many challenges that lie

ahead, but the group strongly b≤ievesthat Shrewsbury has the potential tobecome one of the UK’s leadingcanal-towns. Severn Magazine w∏lbe f∫lowing various ◊ages of theproje± as π progresses – in themeantime, anyone intere◊ed in finding out more about the canal or how to become inv∫ved wπh theproje±, is encouraged to visπ thewebsπe: www.sncanal.org.uk ∞

CANALS TRUST

The flourishing Shrewsbury andNewport Canals Tru◊ wasformed in 2000 wπh the

principal obje±ive of re-opening thecanals which used to serve Newportand Shrewsbury. Consi◊ing of manymembers and v∫unteers, the tru◊aims to prote±, conserve and improvethe route of the canals for the benefitof the communπy. The ultimate goalis to bring a navigable waterway toShrewsbury which is conne±ed wπhthe national canal n≥work.

In an area which is now known asT≤ford, a series of canals were fir◊bu∏t by budding indu◊rial entrepre-neurs to serve the growing number ofcoalfi≤ds and ironworks throughoutthe region. In 1795, Thomas T≤fordtook over as engineer of the partiallycon◊ru±ed Shrewsbury Canal, whicheventually opened 2 years later.

Wπh a total length of 17 m∏es, 11 lo∞s and even a tunn≤ 970 yardslong at Berwi∞ near Shrewsbury, theShrewsbury Canalwould have been a◊unning sight inthe height of πspopularπy. Providingan e∂cient and safemeans of tran∆ortation of goods, canals oµered traders a much b≥term≥hod of moving materials aroundthe region in comparison to tradπionalhorse and cart.

Canals such as the Shrewsburyand Newport routes benefitted fromsignificant inve◊ment and wouldhave enjoyed a pro∆erous life in theirprime. However, the birth of the ra∏way◊arted to bring the gradual declineof Brπain’s n≥work of waterways.

Many peo√e in Shrewsbury, both locals and visπing touri◊s, are continually surprised to learn that our town used to be home to a bu◊ling canal which supported thriving indu◊ry.

A group of dedicated and passionate enthusia◊s are now d≥ermined to see the former Shrewsbury and Newport canal route re◊ored for future generations.

Interesting facts aboutShrewsbury’s canal:The canal was opened in 1796 andended at a terminus ju◊ north ofShrewsbury Ca◊le. The originalowners were the Shrewsbury CanalCompany at fir◊ – but ownershippassed to various ra∏way companiesover the years.

Co◊ing ju◊ under £65,000 to bu∏d,the canal proved to be pro∆erous inthe town for some time. However, πwas o∂cially abandoned in 1944, although peo√e continued to use theroute up unt∏ the early 1950s.

Coal, lime◊one, iron and generalgoods were tran∆orted into the town via the canal and barges werecharged 2p per ton upon enteringShrewsbury. This 2p charge waswid≤y considered to be far too expensive though and thus the pricewas reduced to 1p per ton.Non≥h≤ess, the co◊ rose againwπhin several years!

The nearby Canal Tavern was bu∏t in1820-21 and provided a much-lovedre◊ing √ace for trav≤ling boatmenas w≤l as the locals. The pub alsooµered ◊abling for up to 5 horses.Records from 1901 show that theTavern was ◊∏l an alehouse whichwas owned by Mr Robert Po∫e of St Mary’s Stre≥ – and that the premises incurred business rates of £22.15s.0d.

The“turning over anew leaf”approachis something we alldo, and improvingour physical fitnessand appearance isusually high on our agenda, so it’sno wonder healthclubs are packed-out over January.

Banish the belly fat; We all knowhow dangerous a growing waistlinecan be to our health. It’s a commontalking point in every gym throughoutthe year. However, over the Chri◊masperiod the average person can gainup to 5lbs, therefore shifting furtherem¬asis on tightening up your tumcome January. The tip; Do Intervals to h≤p shift thatgut and improve your oxygen debt. A ◊udy from Canada found that exercisers who did 30-minute workouts that included short, hardeµorts lo◊ three times as much fat in 15 weeks as their peers who performed ◊eady-paced workouts for 45 minutes.

Be realistic; We earlier e◊ablishedthe reasons why health clubs are always pa∞ed in January, but π’s un-reali◊ic goals that cause thesefluxes of peo√e to end the fitnessque◊ by February. The tip; Think short-term ratherthan long, pi∞ a maximum of 2 or 3reali◊ic areas you wish to improveduring a period of 6 weeks and thenassess your progress.

Get functional; Over the la◊ fewyears Fun±ional Training (workouts

that mimic every day movements)have been popular in gyms up anddown the country and this trendshows no sign of dying out in 2012.The tip; Do workouts that mimiclife. By training in this manor youcan recruπ more muscles that areneeded to work tog≥her in all √anesof movement. This w∏l lead you tobu∏d a greater, leaner, muscle massbase which aids in increasing yourm≥ab∫ic rate in order to e∂cientlyburn calories throughout the day…pr≥ty produ±ive, hey! Could hypnosis provide the solution for you?

All too often we try to achieve goals such as weightloss, changing habits and behaviours or dealing withemotions and we repeatedly fall at the first or secondfence. The reason for this can be an underlying, unacknowledged problem which prevents asuccessful outcome.

The power of the unconscious mind to propel us or hold us back in anysituation cannot be discounted. For instance there is no logical reason why weshould be afraid to travel by air. It has been shown to be one of the safestmethods of traveling. However many otherwise balanced and 'normal' peopleare gripped by a fear of this everyday task. This and other types of fear/phobia,behaviours and emotions can be readily helped with hypnotherapy.

Maria has been successful in helping clients to overcome these perceivedobstacles for a number of years. Before training to be a hypnotherapist sheenjoyed a successful career, spanning more than thirty years, as nurse inclinical practice and latterly NHS management.

Her enduring fascination with the mind and body connection led her toundertake study with the Contemporary College of Therapeutics based inLondon and has since been using a wide range of techniques. She now seesclients at Cedar House Clinic, Shrewsbury Business Park and helps people witha wide range of conditions. She is registered with the General HypnotherapyRegister, Complementary Natural Health Council.
