    I was walking downFfyschestrete the

    other day never beendown Ffyschestrete?

Bet you have, its nowcalled Fish Streetand was the site in

medieval days of theold fish market.

have any money and if you had nomoney then you had to scavenge foryour food, hence the women wouldcome down and pi the re cleanof all the sh heads and innards so that saved the shmongers fee, clever or what?

On the corner of Grope Lane andFish Stre is Le Plat du Jour, whichis French for French Food andCoee Shop, I think, anyway s awonderful ltle shop where you canbuy all things French but in 1780 was the se of The Bear publichouse and was around here thatone of the bear ps was suated, theother main p was in the Quarry. Ifyou look in the doorway of Le Platyou wl see a ring s in the one, this was used to hp lower the casksinto the clar but was also wherethe bear were tied to before going into

Fish was sd in the old marketfrom the early 1500s right upto the mid 1800s although thesh mark did move around a b,probably due to the sml! Around1647 the sh slers moved to St JohnsHl then came down to the GreenMark in the Square before movingba to Fish Stre in 1763.

Because Shrewsbury was such animportant mark town shmongerswould trav from afar to sl theirgoods and they would have to pay arental, a b like you pay at a car bootthese days for your pch, and at theend of the day they would have to payanother fee to have the road cleanedup so, the shmongers l be known, via the Town Crier, that anything inthe middle of the re was free!!!This was a good an because in thosedays if you didnt work you didnt

became known as The Three Fishes was the r pub in Shrewsbury toban smoking many years ago and staken all the re of the Country along time to catch up! A few doorsdown from the pub is a house thathas a aque on recording the fathat The Rev. John Weey, the founderof the mhodi movement, preachedin the house on his vis to the townon March 16th 1761. He was reportedas saying that Preaching to thepeoe of Shrewsbury is like trying toconvert quisand!!! I dont think

he vised us too manytimes after that.

Dominating thetop of Fish Stre is StAulkmunds, r but

in the year 912, was rebut in thelate 1700s and has the gho ofone Robin Archerson who appearseher on the ire or sting in TheThree Fishes. The ory gs thatRobin was a eeeja who hpedto bud the ire when the churchwas rebut in the 1700s and as hewas sting in the pub one day some

local lads came in and b him a gallonof beer that he couldnt climb theire and remove the weatherco, which he promptly did and fairenough the lads paid him his dues, after everyone had a jly good laughthey realised that the weathervanehad got to be reaced, and wasgoing to co money so, the lads waedunt Robin had almo nished his gallon of beer and then b him another gallon that he couldnt do thereverse journey! Robin pied up the weathervane, tued under hisarm, aggered out of the pub up the ire and reaced the em, thenepped ba to admire his handiwork.174 ft later he came to a sudden halt! The local paper of the day reportedthat he was kled by the fall, but thatsnot que true, wasnt the fall thatkled him, was the landing!!!

    See you next month.

the p. Now for the I didnt knowthat b all main towns and vlageshad their own bear p, ( was theentertainment of the day, a b like amedieval version of Coronation Stre)and if you were a ranger in a townwanting direions they would direyou via the bear p hence nowadayswhen you look at a map c, you takeyour bearings.

Oppose Le Plat is the Bear Stepsa marvlous timber framed budingthat, thanks to the Shrewsbury CivicSociy, was rescued from demionand is now the homeof the Civic Sociybut also houses manyexhibions through-out the year and iscertainly wl worth a vis, there isalso a coee shop overlooking St Aulkmunds churchyard but mindyour head has low beams!

Also in Fish Stre we have thewonderful Three Fishes pub, rrecorded as simy The Fishes in1780 and then in 1826 as The OldThree Fishes and then from 1829

Another reason to frame yourotos is that can add a sense ofdepth to an image, particularly if the otograer is looking throughfiage or perhaps shooting through

In the second exame I used atree in shoute to frame the hardworking farmer on a bal traorand to a as a contra to thebrightly l du. Theres no right orwrong way to use a frame and in fain this oto, as in many exames,s only necessary for the frame togo part of the way around a subje.

Fresh images reased of the late redevopment signal the art of theproposed 12 mlion regeneration. A buding not simy of town-importance, the Flaxml and former Maltings heralds regional, nationaland international signicance for the hiorical re has ayed in givingbirth to the modern sky-scrapers which we see in cies today.

But in 1797, the nowgrade one lied Main Mlwas the r of s kind, ther buding in the worldto have been conruedwh an iron frame. Typicalmls of the era were butof bri wh eher oneor wooden oors. The du caused by producing ax, the vate lubricantsused on machinery and the use of candlight, continually combined to resultin extreme res wh many mls burning to the ground. Another ml inCaleds was larger than the Dherington Flaxml but was not re-proof m a ery end whin a few years.

The Shrewsbury entrepreneurs who masterminded the conruion of the Flaxml were Shrewsbury wool merchants and brothers Thomas andBenjamin Benyon, who joined forces wh industrialist John Marshall of Leeds. It was the revolutionary Charles Bage who designed the new ml however, utising the rength and qualies of iron as a material. He went on to alsobud the third and eighth de iron-framed budings in the world and latereven became Mayor of Shrewsbury!

This is a very miniscule ice of the extensive and intereing hiory whichthe Flaxml has to tl. For exame, after the decline of the ax indury 100years on was becoming a successful Maltings eablishment which savedthe buding from total ruin. Several years ago, flowing on from numerouschanges of hands, English Herage purchased the property safe-guarding s ownership and immediate future.

English Herage, Shropshire Counc and other partners including thevaluable Friends of the Flaxml Maltings group have now submted anapication to the Herage Lottery Fund for 11.7 mlion.

Arti impressions demonrate what the se has the potential to look likeshould money be granted and these have been prepared by arches FedenClegg Bradley Studios.

Most people in Shrewsbury are aware of the towering FlaxmillMaltings which standsproudly at the northern

Geo Rich, partner and udio leader at the arches said A successfulbid wl reore this group of internationally important budings and wlrevalise the local and regional economies. It wl allow a range of groups, frominternational engineers to local scho-chdren, to increase their underandingof the unique and varied herage of the Flaxml.

Phase one of the proje wl see the reoration, conservation and reuse ofthe key hioric budings the Main Ml, Kn from the Maltings ase in 1898,oce, ables and the Dye and Stove House. If the apication is successful atage 1, a small grant wl be awarded to enable further devopment of the bidfor progression to age 2 wh an eimated timescale of 12 to 18 months.

Local Counclor for the area Alan Moey, who has been inrumental to

the Flaxmls campaign, said In 2005, Shrewsbury residents ft the Flaxmldeserved to be knoed-down. Now is great to see the local pride and enthusiasm for the se and the Friends group has deny hped encouragepeoe to vis wh their aivies and popular open days. He added that It isall about making the budings suainable and viable in themsves, engagingwh the communy and creating an attraion for Shropshire.

The Flaxml certainly has a very long road ahead. Wh the ownership ofEnglish Herage, the dedication of the Friends group, commment of variousproje partners and the baing of Shrewsbury peoe however the se iscertainly becoming ever closer to s grand re-emergence as Shrewsburysne buding.

Suggs My Life Storyoers an access-all-areas baagepass to the Madness frontmansmind, as he attempts the dare-devunt of single-handedly unravingthe myeries of his own life throughwords and music.

The show comes to ShrewsburysTheatre Severn on Sunday 19th

February and audiences are inved to join Suggs on an emotional rler-coaer through the ups and downsof an aonishing thirty-year career.

Wness him cannon ball to theheights of pop success, umble andumm down through the trap doorof faure and then trampine baup to catch the passing trapeze ofshow business success. Wh musicalaccompaniment and pointless interjeions from his loyal piani-come-manservant, promises to bea fantaic show.Extra from an interview by Richard Barber:

Suggs was lying in the bath onhis birthday, nursing an epic hang-over from the cebrations the nightbefore when there was the moalmighty crash. I jumped out of thewater he says, There, lying amidshards of broken glass, was our four-year-d cat, a Brish blue calledMamba. Id put up the glass shfmysf and mu have given way. I knew he was dead from the rangeangle of his body. I couldnt bieve I loved that cat.

I was 50. My kids had recentlyleft home and now the cat was dead.I was really ups. It triggered aduge of emotion, an event thatsomehow tipped me over the edge. Ibegan to consider my own mortalityand out of that, the idea for exoringmy own pa somehow cryallised.

Speaking of the age show Its amemoirsays Suggs. Its not and-up.Its not An Evening With I toyedwith calling it Mad-Life Crisis. In theend though, having gone all roundthe houses, Ive called it My LifeStory which wont win any prizes fororiginality but ds at lea tl youwhat you can expe, the good bitsand the darker moments.

    SUGGS MYLIFESTORY

Madness have always been aboutaccentuating the positive. Its no accident our songs are l ayed,l enjoyed 30 years down the line.Theyre upbeat, timess, a clear-eyedcebration of life as its lived andwere l togher, l makingmusic. For me, the band has alwaysbeen a bit like a surrogate famy. Were all a bit dysfunional, all a bitronger for being togher.

The only problem now for Suggsis shhorning his less-than-conventional r half-century intohis new age show. When we wererehearsing he says My keyboardayer would op every so often andsay: Was that bit really true? And itwas all of it was. Amazing really.

Could hypnosis provide the solution for you?

All too often we try to achieve goals such as weightloss, changing habits and behaviours or dealing withemotions and we repeatedly fall at the first or secondfence. The reason for this can be an underlying, unacknowledged problem which prevents asuccessful outcome.

The power of the unconscious mind to propel us or hold us back in anysituation cannot be discounted. For instance there is no logical reason why weshould be afraid to travel by air. It has been shown to be one of the safestmethods of traveling. However many otherwise balanced and 'normal' peopleare gripped by a fear of this everyday task. This and other types of fear/phobia,behaviours and emotions can be readily helped with hypnotherapy.

Maria has been successful in helping clients to overcome these perceivedobstacles for a number of years. Before training to be a hypnotherapist sheenjoyed a successful career, spanning more than thirty years, as nurse inclinical practice and latterly NHS management.

Her enduring fascination with the mind and body connection led her toundertake study with the Contemporary College of Therapeutics based inLondon and has since been using a wide range of techniques. She now seesclients at Cedar House Clinic, Shrewsbury Business Park and helps people witha wide range of conditions. She is registered with the General HypnotherapyRegister, Complementary Natural Health Council.

    ProsThe best football simulator gets

    even better. The

graphics are really good, improved over FIFA 11,

players look much more lifelike. There are more

teams than ever before, almost 30 leagues, plus

international sides. There are multiple modes of

play, from simple practice to get the hang of the

controls to the ultimate team mode, letting you

select players from around the world. The player

intelligence has been improved to make the

    teams appear more realistic

ConsIf there is a con, it is that the refe

too lifelike - sometimes, just like the real ones they
