Severe Storms Research Meeting 1
Concluding Remarks and Future Plans
October 20-21, 2015
So Now What?- Members of team (Emory, Braun, Petersen,
Wurman, Kosiba, and Wolff) will write the first half
of the white paper regarding scientific
questions/objectives and necessary
measurements.
- A draft will be sent out to the group for comments
by Thanksgiving.
- Comments will be requested by Jan. 1
(Some) Overarching Themes• In situ measurements of updrafts and downdrafts – How are we
going to do this? How do we relate updraft strength and
instability inferences with what we can detect from GOES-R
(Bedka, Williams, and others)?
• Time lapse cameras both on the ground and on/in aircraft
• Necessary to composite 3-D views of satellite products, radar
data, and lightning for tornadic vs. non-tornadic storms
(Goodman, Cecil, and others)
• Cradle-to-Grave Thunderstorm Lifecycle – EVS Opportunity
(Petersen)
• Pre-field phase (Kosiba, Markowski, and others)
• Take advantage of LMAs for field campaign planning purposes

The blue oval on the left shows the Central Plains regions, typically referred to as “Tornado Alley”. The blue oval on the right shows the southeastern region of the United States referred to as “Dixie Alley”. The red star represents the location of McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, KS.
