Acts 1:12–14; Ps 27:1, 4, 7–8 1 Pt 4:13–16; Jn 17:1–11a

The days between Jesus’s ascension and Pentecost are filled with anticipation. The public ministry of Je-sus has concluded, but the mission of the church does not begin until the gift of the Spirit is bestowed. In Acts, Luke tells us that after Jesus ascended, the disciples “returned to Jerusalem … [and] devoted themselves with one accord to prayer”. This core group consists of the Eleven along with “some wom-en, / and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his broth-ers”. The inclusion of these people anticipates the progressive growth of the church throughout the rest of Acts. It also reminds us that “some women” (see accompanied Jesus during his public ministry. There is continuity between the life of Jesus and the life of the church. In the letter of Peter, our author continues with the idea of uniting our sufferings with those of Christ. Echoing one of the beatitudes, he tells us that we are “blessed” if we “are insulted for the name of Christ”. Christ’s suffering led to glory, and through our suffer-ing we will receive a share in his glory. In John’s text today, Jesus acknowledges that “the hour has come”. His hour arrives with his suffering and death, leading to resurrection; it is an hour of glo-ry. Scholars sometimes refer to the second half of John’s text as the Book of Glory because Jesus’s identity as Son of God is revealed: “The glory that I had … before the world began” returns to him. In his prayer today, Jesus focuses on his disciples, who “have believed that you sent me”. Knowing that he is about to return to the Father, he prays for those who “are in the world,” that they “may be one just as we are” and come to share in God’s life. For reflection: Do I feel a sense of solidarity with the people with whom I pray? Are we a community of be-lievers or a group of individuals who happen to be in the same place?

Prayer Shawl MinistryPrayer Shawl MinistryPrayer Shawl MinistryPrayer Shawl Ministry Looking for a way to share your time and talent and be a part of a vital and reward-ing ministry? Since our ministry began in 2008, a small group of dedicated woman have produced over 800 shawls/lap robes, and over 125 Baptism blan-kets. We are thrilled that so many people have been touched by our hand-made shawls, lap robes and Baptism blan-kets. We are touched by the many heart-felt thank-you notes we receive from peo-ple who were given our items. We are always looking for more volun-teers to join our ministry. You can knit, crochet or weave items from your home and drop them off at the rectory. Feel free to use any pattern of your choice, or we can offer you pattern ideas. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call Anita at 365-9147 or Mary

at 232-2720 and we will be happy to talk with you. Please con-sider being a part of this very reward-ing ministry. Prayer Shawls are available in church the first weekend of the month and during office hours in the Parish Office. The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets on the first Monday of each month. The next meeting will be June 2 at 11 AM in the Rectory. All are welcome. Monetary donations and yarn are always appreciated. Many of the beautiful crea-tions you see in church were made from donated yarn.

The 2014 Catholic Services Appeal continues in our parish and all parishes throughout the Diocese of Gary. This is an opportunity for us to unite with all Catholics in the diocese to share our blessings and show our concern for one another. The Catholic Services Appeal provides for needs across the Diocese of Gary and beyond its geo-graphic borders, needs that cannot be effectively fulfilled by individual Catholics or local parishes. Please prayerfully consider a generous gift to this year’s CSA. Every gift, regardless the size, is im-portant to the success of the 2014 Catholic Services Appeal.
