Seven Oaks residents, May is generally a busy time for most families: school projects need to be finished, summer camp and swim class dates need to be confirmed, and summer vacation dates need to be booked!

Since May happens to be “National Barbecue Month” it’s a good time to get your gas grills cleaned and refueled for backyard parties! One such occasion is Cinco de Mayo (the 5th of May), a day we celebrate Mexican heritage and delicious Mexican food and drinks! (There are recipes inside for you to try.)

Of course, don’t forget to give your Mom EXTRA attention on Sunday, May 12th. She will appreciate a much-needed break from her busy to-do list, and some extra hugs and kisses! (Why not make a list of all the reasons you APPRECIATE her?)

May brings us Memorial Day which occurs on Monday, May 27th. Memorial Day is a day of

remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in that war. By the 20th century Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died in all wars. (Please see the article about our local Amputee Veterans of America Support Team and how you can donate or volunteer to assist their worthy cause.)

And finally, May is “National Photograph Month”. What better time to gather together your kids, friends, and family pets for photos? Or perhaps capture lovely nature photos? Please send them in to your community magazine cover contest! (A high resolution of 300 is required for the cover).

We always look forward to your articles, photos and input,

Ann MacKinnonEditor

The Club at Seven Oaks is a $4.500,000 complex that has a club-house with a gathering room, kitchen,

state-of-the-art fitness room, aerobics room, and a cafe. Outside the clubhouse is a junior-olympic lap pool, leisure pool, wading pool, children’s splash water park, five competition quality tennis courts, lighted basketball court, sand volleyball court, and a playground for children. Getting all of this ready for the influx of people that will occur during the summer when the 2,000 plus families at Seven Oaks come to enjoy the facility is no easy task.

Fortunately, we have Theresa Flores, as the clubhouse manager, to oversee this effort. She started preparing for the 2013 summer in the fall of last year during the “off season”. With the help of Bryan Cooper, staff supervisor, and their staff, The Club at Seven Oaks will be ready for everyone to enjoy. Here’s some of the things that they have done.

Since many residents use the pools, Theresa and Bryan took actions to insure the pools were ready. Bryan said, “Our pool deck has seen a face-lift in the form of re-strapped lounge chairs. New straps were added to 24 of our existing chairs at a cost of $2,130. We have also had the slide joints repaired and recoated to eliminate leakage that was occur-ring. These leaks were repaired by applying fiber sheets between the joints. The fiber sheets are then sanded flat and recoated to a smooth finish at a cost of $2,400. Our main-tenance staff, directed by Bob Semple, has also been hard at work pressure washing the cabana canopies and pool deck. Jeremy Hunt from the maintenance department has been instrumental in the implementation of these projects. The clubhouse interior and exterior has also been revitalized with a fresh coat of paint. This year the motor for the splash park finally had to be rebuilt at a cost of $2,000, and the clay tennis courts were resurfaced for $3,500.”

CDD InFormAtIonSeven OakSThe inside of the clubhouse also received the attention of Theresa and Bryan during the off season. Bryan added, “The café was refurnished to increase our seating capacity. A new complimentary paint scheme was chosen for this renovation to match the new furnishings. This renovation was approved by the CDD at a cost of $5,425.86. In other areas, we have also improved our gym equipment. The old equipment was showing signs of wear and the cost of replacement parts began to exceed the worth. We opted to purchase a new multi-gym ($5,953) to add some different stations and provide the residents with top-notch fitness equip-ment. We also chose to purchase a new Matrix treadmill ($2,891) and a new Precor recumbent bike ($3,295) rather than repair the existing ones due to age and cost related concerns. Our gathering room has seen a small improvement in the form of an in-stalled pantry style cabinet to house cleaning materials and supplies for rentals that take place in the room. This was to help main-tain a clean and professional appearance by not using the rotunda area as storage, which is open and visible to patrons.”

Last but not least is the staff. Due to having part time employees during the summer, only 50 percent of them returned. To insure both the returning employees as well as the new employees were ready, all employees were provided training along with a cus-tomer service presentation. The employees were also provided CPR training to help ensure the safety of everyone that enjoys the pools.

Home owners AssoCIAtIonSeven OakS

s pring has arrived, meaning it’s time for home repairs. The Home Depot and

Lowe’s Hardware Stores as well as many local home improvement services have released a list of the top seven actions homeowners should take to get their houses in shape for springtime. SOPOA has compiled a list of important things you can do to improve your home’s appearance within SEVEN OAKS this spring:

1. Gutter Installation/CleaningGutters, one of the most underrated aspects of any home, will extend the life of the roof, soffits and fascia of a house. For the integrity of the roof, having the gutters cleaned is highly recommended.

2. window & Door Frame repair It’s time to let in the fresh air and cool breezes. This is especially tricky with a busted window or door, which happens frequently when the weather is cold.

3. Power washing servicesGetting the house, driveway & sidewalks, deck, and patio furniture professionally power washed can really increase curb appeal. Not only does power washing reduce wear and tear, it makes everything look good as new.

4. Deck repairPerform a careful inspection of the deck to determine areas that will need attention. Are railings solidly fastened? Is the surface splintered or have nails exposed? Does any fram-ing need to be replaced? Make a list of all the work to be done to stay safe this summer.

5. wood rot repairWood rot usually means there is underlying damage caused by water leaking behind the siding or between seams. Oftentimes, the leaking and rotting began years before, hidden from sight. Underneath, however, soaked wood has begun to rot and may be infested with insects.

6. PaintMaking sure the paint on the exterior of your home is in good shape is very importance for the appearance of your home. Please refer to the Seven Oaks website for the latest paint color patterns available and submit your request to the DRC for approval. When you paint the exterior of your home with exterior latex paint, the most durable, tough-est, most protective finish is achieved when the weather isn’t too hot or too cold, which is why springtime is typi-cally the best time of year for exterior house painting. There are other great reasons to paint your home this spring. In some ways your home’s exterior paint job gets stressed out. Instead, exterior paint gets hassled by various weather conditions. Moisture can wreak havoc on exte-rior paint. Cold weather, frost, rain, and high humidity can all negatively affect the paint. Moisture in all forms can cause paint to swell and soften, which eventually leads to crack-ing, blistering, flaking, and peeling. Moisture conditions also support the growth of mildew.

Time To Give Your Residence Some TlC!

The sun can cause paint to fade, and it can diminish the protection which the paint provides for the exterior, due to paint erosion. What happens is that the ultraviolet rays of the sun can break down the exterior paint’s binder. As the binder deteriorates, pigment is released in the form of chalk or a powder which can wash away when it rains. Dramatic fluctuations in temperature can cause wood surface and many other surfaces to contract and expand. The movement can cause paint to crack and flake off, if the paint on the surface isn’t flexible enough.

7. LandscapingMost of the homes within Seven Oaks have landscaping and it certainly takes a beating during the winter months. Consider the shape of your flowerbeds. Straight lines are boring! Add curves to the edges of flowerbeds to make them more ap-pealing – check with the DRC before making any significant changes and submit your request immediately. Boulders are another great way to break up flat lines with a natural element. Plant evergreens. They stay looking great all year round so they are a wise investment.

For shrubs, holly and boxwood are always safe choices. To get the most out of your springtime plants, trim! Plants that go dormant during winter months should be trimmed so they can look their best when the weather warms up. Start preparing for spring gardening in the winter. Plan where you want to place new flowers and start prepping the flowerbeds. Mulch, especially all bark cedar, is a great way to add color and get the most out of plants.

Reinvent every space in your home this spring, with decorating tricks from design experts, quick and easy home improvement, organizing and cleaning tips, and gardening and landscaping ideas that will improve your home’s curb appeal in order to continue to make Seven Oaks the select living development within Pasco County!

Until next time!

GFWC Pasco Junior Woman’s Club Pinwheels for Prevention initiative has

begun. Pinwheels can be seen from the west bound lane on Highway 56 in Wesley Chapel. On Saturday April 6th the pinwheels will cross Interstate 75 and continue in the west bound lane.

“There have been some ups and downs with this project,” said Patricia Murphy project chairman “we placed 400 pinwheels on Easter Sunday and on Wednesday half of them were gone. We had our permit number on our sign as required so I assume they were stolen.” However, Murphy won’t let a little thing like stolen pinwheels slow her down. “Fortunately the pinwheels in front

of Mini Wesley Chapel are intact and spinning. The team at Mini has been great and they have an excellent security system so we are hoping they caught the culprit on tape.”

Meanwhile, Murphy has contacted JD Porter, JR Sierra and Jim Quinlan to request permission to plant the pinwheels on their property inside the fence. “The Porter family is amazing and has a long history of philan-thropy,” said Murphy, “so I hope this project appeals to them and they grant permission to plant on Wiregrass Ranch.”

According to a 2011 report from the Florida Department of Children and Families, Pasco County had 7,434

reports of child abuse. A result of those 7,434 reports 844 children were removed from their homes and placed in the Florida foster care system.

“The mission of Pasco Juniors is to empower women and enrich the lives of Pasco’s children. We believe this initiative is paramount to reaching our goal to decrease the number of children abused in Pasco County,” said Murphy, “and it is our hope

that we can work together with the community to bring this goal to fruition.”

If you would like to participate please visit the website at GFWCPascoJu-niors.wix.com/Welcome for more information on the project or to vol-unteer. You can also attend a meeting on the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30pm at Seven Oaks Country Club in Wesley Chapel. v

Artisan Aesthetics Offers Innovative Treatment

Dr. Stanley Castor, a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, has been chosen

as one of the first physicians in the United States to offer New GPS Laser Lipocontrol™ Treatment - an innovative body shaping technology from Europe.

Dr. Castor’s practice, Artisan Aesthetics, is one of the pioneers in the field of aesthetic medicine. “Even with dieting and exercise, many people are seeking ways to quickly and effectively remove stubborn areas of unwanted fat,” explains Dr. Castor. “Lipocontrol, the latest innovative technology to hit our shores, quickly and safely removes problem areas of fat deposits, with total control and safety.”

FDA-approved Lipocontrol uses thermal energy in the form of a heat generating laser to liquefy unwanted fat and then remove the liquid fat in one easy procedure. A built-in GPS tracking system allows Dr. Castor to determine in real time exactly how much energy is being delivered to a given area of the body and to deliver a uniform amount of energy. “This additional control guarantees a high level of safety as well as more even and smoother results,” says Dr. Castor.

The entire procedure can be done in-office in one session on a number of different areas of the body including the abdomen, waist (love handles), hips and thighs, buttocks, back of arms, knees, ankles and even under the chin to remove unsightly “turkey necks.”

“I am truly amazed at the performance and results we are seeing from Lipocon-trol,” says Dr. Castor. “Hands down, this is the best minimally invasive fat removal procedure currently on the market. My patients love the results!”Dr. Castor is Board-Certified in

Plastic Surgery by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the only plastic surgery board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. He also is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a repeat recipient of the Patients’ Choice Award in recognition of the difference he has made in the lives of his patients, and was named in the 2010-2012 Guide to America’s Top Surgeons by the Consumer’s Research Council.

“All patients are unique with indi-vidual problem areas that need to be addressed,” says Dr. Castor. “I strive for the best results for each patient, while keeping their safety, comfort and well-being in mind.”

Artisan Aesthetics is located at 5383 Primrose Lake Circle, Suite A, in Tampa Palms. For more informa-tion, call 813-971-2000, visit www.DrCastor.com or Facebook.com/DrStanleyCastor. v

On April 20th Pasco County participated in the Great American Cleanup. This year 423 people in 17 groups volunteered to help clean up their community. Keep Pasco Beauti-ful and Pasco County Recycling would like to extend their apprecia-tion for everyone’s hard work. The results of their efforts are listed in the box to the left. Despite the fact that the weather threatened – and that was all it did because the weather was excellent (overcast and cool) – and that made some teams and volunteers stay away, we still had excellent results. Saturday was a good day and Pasco County is a much better place be-cause of their efforts!

this year we enjoyed another fun filled afternoon of kids scouring the Soccer Field for Easter Eggs, and

fun for all ages out by the pool with entertainment provided by DJ Joey Jamz. This year we hosted just fewer than 300 children for the egg hunt. Seven Oaks supplied 5000 eggs for all the families that signed up

by the cutoff date. This amount should have given every child at least 15 eggs to collect. Seven Oaks also provided 2 face painters and a balloon twister for the kids to enjoy while waiting their turn to take pictures with our Easter Bunny. We enjoyed the experience and all the smiling faces and hope that everyone had

a good time at the Clubhouse. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year. If anyone has any suggestions as to how we can make next year even better, please feel free to stop by the office and share your suggestions or send us an email to [email protected].

established in January 2007, Amputee Veterans of America Support Team

(AVAST) has grown to be one of the most recognized amputee sup-port teams in the Tampa Bay Area. The Team consists of veterans and non-veterans who have experienced an amputation that is life chang-ing. The organization also includes family members, friends and V.A. liaison involved in the rehabilita-tion of amputees.

AVAST members work diligently at keeping the organization ,

activities and its membership grow-ing. Members train for and have achieved the following Certifica-tions:

•AmputeeCoalitionofAmericaMember and Peer Certification.

•AdaptiveGolfAcademyPeerCertification.

•VeteransAdministrationPeerCertification.

This allows members to understand and assist other amputees in be-coming independent and empow-ered individuals. The success of the

organization is a statement of the dedication of the officers, advisory council and members. The AVAST amputee color guard was started in 2012. “Our purpose was to raise awareness, hope and inspiration for wounded veterans and amputees. We wanted to show the people of the community and the nation that even though you’re an amputee, you can still come back and be a productive part of society,” says Rudy Salas, president of AVAST. “A lot of wounded vet-erans returning home don’t know that. The color guard is only part of what our organization does.” The first Wednesday of every month, AVAST members gather at Terrace Hill Golf Club along with patients from the James Haley Veterans Memorial Hospital. They work to develop adaptive golfing skills and help coach the veterans in the game’s rules and etiquette. Each day out on the golf course is a gift to all who participate.

“There are so many people responsible for our growth throughout the year; I cannot thank all of them,” adds Rudy. “To all the organizations who invited us to golf tournaments, I say thank you and keep those invitations coming!”

There are a variety of ways that you can participate, help or donate. Cash or donations by check or money orders are always beneficial to assist with transportation, fees and expenses related to the out-reach of our members. Send your check or money order to: AVAST, 1631 Firewheel Drive, Wesley Chapel, FL, 33543.

AVAST is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Your donation is tax deductible as a charitable contribution. Tax ID: 27-2829706.

when you walk the hallway at New Tampa Christian Academy,

you may hear the days of the week sung to a snappy beat, number chants in English and in Spanish, or a chorus of little voices singing Thank You God for Making Me. A peek inside the busy classrooms will reveal two-year- olds creating play dough shapes, three-year-olds

identifying and using the alphabet, and four-year-olds applying their number skills to counting, grouping, and totaling.

New Tampa Christian Acad-emy, located across the street from Walmart in the Tampa Bay Presbyterian Church, has been giving children, ages 2, 3, and 4, an outstanding academic and spiritual

foundation for life and learning for the past 17 years. Director Cheryl Barber identifies several distin-guishing characteristics of NTCA. Together, our staff has over 75 years of teaching experience and several individuals with masters’ degrees. Most teachers have been at the school for at least 5 years, and all demonstrate their love for children and ability to provide an engaging and challenging learning environ-ment. The program includes a music component known to parents by the productions presented twice annually in the church sanctuary, and by the active songs that become part of every child’s experience and preschool memories. NTCA’s commitment to the individual child is seen in the school’s regular maintenance of a much lower than required student-teacher ratio. The two teachers in each classroom work as a team, encouraging children to progress individually, give expression to their ideas, and develop social skills. NTCA, a decidedly Chris-tian school, serves a culturally- and religiously-diverse population with

warmth and grace. Ms. Barber says, “We teach children about the God of the Bible, His wonderful creative acts, and His redeeming love. This teaching is foundational to every subject taught and provides the context in which the truth about all things is explored”.

NTCA is currently enrolling stu-dents for the school year beginning in August of 2013. The morning preschool offers two or three day per week programs. The reasonable tuition prices range from $175.00 per month to $285.00 per month. The private pre-K-4 program at NTCA maintains a low student-teacher ratio, gives emphasis to the Christian teaching described above, and exceeds the academic standards for kindergarten preparation. For more information, or to schedule a tour, call us at 813-973-2443, or visit our web site at www.newtam-pachristianacademy.org. The Florida Wind Band will present a concert on May 6, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. in the new

USF School of Music Concert Hall. “Seis de Mayo: Fiesta del Vientos” will feature an evening of Spanish

and Latino music ranging from classical to contemporary. This May 17th, come to Freedom High School for Relay for Life New Tampa, and look for 15 women wearing pink cowboy hats. They are the Mary Kay Sisterhood. Over the past three years, this rip-roaring team has raised thousands of dollars to cure cancer.

Their wine tasting in March raised $880 of the $3,147 already banked

with the American Cancer Society. Quail Hollow Golf Club, Time for Wine, Jersey Mike’s and Hampton Inn stepped up to help. Bay City Bank in Lutz collected $137 in change at teller windows.

If you missed that event, come to the Mary Kay Sisterhood tent during the Relay. Buy chances for a Miche bag, Mary Kay skin care basket or an MK Men’s basket. After putting in your miles, get a foot and leg rub with Mary Kay energy cream.

The Sisterhood is especially passion-ate because two members are cancer survivors.

“It’s important for us to be there as sisters supporting each other and our faith. We have really bonded. The Luminaria Event is really special,” said Donna Moyer, Mary Kay Sisterhood team captain. To order a luminaria in honor or in memoriam of a loved one, call Moyer during business hours at 813-333-6668. v

Nothing is more frustrating than finding the perfect cu-cumber or head of lettuce at

the farmers market, paying top-dollar for it, and then... tossing it out a week later when it has gone moldy or slimy in the refrigerator.

No doubt one reason so many of us eat too many convenience foods and too few fruits and vegetables is that it can be hard to get our busy schedules in sync with the produce we bring home with the best of intentions.

Food scientists, however, have dis-covered a remarkably effective way to extend the life of fresh-cut fruits and vegetables by days or even a week. It doesn’t involve the chlorine solutions, irradiation or peroxide baths some-times used by produce packagers.

And it’s easily done in any home by anyone. This method, called heat-shocking, is 100 per cent organic and uses just one ingredient that every cook has handy — hot water.

You may already be familiar with a related technique called blanching, a cooking method in which food is briefly dunked in boiling or very hot water. Blanching can extend the shelf life of broccoli and other plant foods, and it effectively reduces contamina-tion by germs on the surface of the food. But blanching usually ruptures the cell walls of plants, causing color and nutrients to leach out. It also robs delicate produce of its raw taste.

Heat-shocking works differently. When the water is warm but not scalding — temperatures ranging

from 105 F to 140 F work well for most fruits and vegetables — a brief plunge won’t rupture the cells. Rather, the right amount of heat alters the biochemistry of the tissue in ways that, for many kinds of produce, firm the flesh, delay browning and fading, slow wilting, and increase mold resistance.

A long list of scientific studies published during the past 15 years report success using heat-shocking to firm potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, and strawberries; to preserve the color of asparagus, broccoli, green beans, kiwi fruits, celery, and lettuce; to fend off overripe flavors in cantaloupe and other melons; and to generally add to the longevity of grapes, plums, bean sprouts and peaches, among others.

The optimum time and tempera-ture combination for the quick dip seems to depend on many factors, but the procedure is quite simple. Just let the water run from your tap until it gets hot, then fill a large pot of water about two-thirds full, and use a thermometer to measure the temperature. It will probably be between 105 F and 140 F; if not, a few minutes on the stove should do the trick. Submerge the pro-duce and hold it there for several minutes (the hotter the water, the less time is needed), then drain, dry and refrigerate as you normally would.

The bottom line is that soaking your produce in hot water for a few minutes makes it cheaper and more nutritious because more fruits and veggies will end up in your family rather than in the trash.

Heat-shocking Guidelines

The optimal time and temperature for heat-shocking fruits and veg-etables varies. Use these as general guidelines.

Asparagus: 2 to 3 minutes at 131 F

Broccoli: 7 to 8 minutes at 117 F

Celery: 90 seconds at 122 F

Grapes: 8 minutes at 113 F

Kiwi fruit: 15 to 20 minutes at 104 F

Lettuce: 1 to 2 minutes at 122 F

Oranges (whole): 40 to 45 min-utes at 113 F

Peaches (whole): 40 minutes at 104 F. v

movie night

& Food DriveSeven Oaks Elementary held their first Movie Night on Friday, April 5th. The PTA sponsored the movie night, where the movie “ Wreck It Ralph” was played for over 300 people on our basketball courts. We had popcorn donated by Muvico Theatres in New Tampa and supplied bottled water to families.

The event was free for families and we asked families to bring food items with them to be donated to Atonement Food Bank in Wesley Chapel. The event was a great success and we collected over 400 food items for the food bank. Attached is a picture of PTA Corresponding Secretary Lauren Moore, PTA President Ana DaSilva-Bernie, PTA Treasurer and SOES teacher Danielle Biggs, Principal BJ Smith and Assistant Principal Tiffany Gocsik.

PtA Donates $2418.00 to Buy Books for students and CharitiesStudents at Seven Oaks Elementary in Wesley Chapel, FL, participated in the Scholastic Book Fairs All For Books program, which resulted in a donation of over 2400 books to children’s charities.

The donation, made by the PTA to the school through the Book Fair’s All for Books™ program, has been used to purchase books for each child at Seven Oaks Elementary, and to put books into the hands of children who can’t afford them.

Scholastic will match the purchase with a donation of one book per every dollar spent to two national non-profit organizations that help families in need: Kids In Need Foundation and Kids in Distressed Situations, Inc. Each year, Scholastic donates up to one million books through the program.

For more information, contact Charla Palmer, Media Specialist at 813-794-0721, or Ana DaSilva- Bernie, SOES PTA President.

Young minds aren’t the only things being nurtured at Wesley Chapel Elemen-

tary School. The Wildcat Garden is blooming with fruit trees, strawberries, tomato plants, broccoli, lettuce, egg-plant, squash, and a variety of other fruits and vegetables thanks to the overwhelming participation during the 1st Annual Wildcat Garden Day.

Students were invited to bring in a flowering plant, fruit or vegetable plant, or fruit tree to plant themselves in the new Wildcat Garden. “The response was overwhelming,” said Physical Education Specialist and Garden Day coordinator, Chris Gorman. “We had over 450 plants brought in by our wonderful students and the best part was that they got to plant them.” The students brought their plants to the front of the school upon arrival where they were marked with their names.

Volunteers helped place the plants in their appropriate spots in the garden according to their type. Then the students came out at their designated times and were each given a pair of gloves and a shovel. Once they located their plant or tree, the dirt began to fly. Volunteers helped the students dig the appropriate sized hole and carefully removed the plants from their containers. The students then filled up two large cups with water and gave their plants a nice drink. Then it was off to the mulch pile where they filled up a small crate with mulch and returned to place it around the freshly planted specimen.

The garden now contains a variety of fruit trees including avocado, lemon, orange, tangerine, peach, apple, plum, pear, pomegranate, and grapefruit just to name a few. The vegetable and fruit section boasts a bounty of herbs, asparagus, peppers, green beans, watermelon, black berries, blue berries, raspberries, kiwi, grapes, okra, tomatoes, broccoli, lettuce, squash, eggplant, strawberries.

The garden day was the inspiration of John Abernathy, Principal of Wesley Chapel Elementary School. “The students were very excited to be apart of the garden day. Once the fruits and vegetables are ready for harvest, the students can have samples of them during their lunch times.”

Funding was provided in part by a grant from The NFL Fuel Up To Play 60 and the Dairy Council of Florida. Wesley Chapel Elementary is also the only school in Pasco County to win the National Bronze Award from The Alliance for a Healthier Generation for two years. Wesley Chapel Elementary School earned the National Recognition Award by improving its nutrition services and physical activity programs to meet or exceed stringent standards set by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s Healthy Schools Program. The Healthy Schools Program provides expert advice and resources at no cost to more than 15,000 schools nationwide to help them reverse the childhood obesity epidemic.

Pasco County and District School Board members received first place in the

Public Education Category for their “Public Outreach in the 2015 Penny for Pasco Renewal” at the 21st Annual Future of the Region Awards luncheon sponsored by the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council, March 25th.

The award application highlighted the County, School District and Penny for Pasco Political Action Committee (PAC) work efforts and strategies for public education and outreach. Both the County and School District conducted public presentations, video informational segments, and held interviews with the media; while the County pro-duced utility bill Inserts, Penny for Pasco Quick Facts, and sited Future

Penny signs at strategic transporta-tion corridor locations. The Penny for Pasco Political Ac-tion Committee (PAC) was staffed with community representatives and leaders that reached out to the public with “Penny for Pasco” signs, a direct mail strategy, dedicated Penny website, Facebook page, and E-newsletters. The success of this Public Outreach Campaign initiative is now being shared with other local

governments (Charlotte County) try-ing to renew their local government infrastructure surtax. “The Penny Renewal Campaign was an outstanding team effort that included two public agencies and a dedicated group of private business interests working together. That team deserves this recognition for their outstanding efforts educating our citizens,” said Michele Baker, Chief Assistant County Administra-tor. “Additionally, we would like to say thank you to the Pasco County citizens who welcomed us into their clubhouses and classrooms to speak and who ultimately voted yes to sup-port this critical investment in our community.” You can learn more about the Penny for Pasco page ( http://www.pasco-countyfl.net/index.aspx?NID=453) and how your penny works for you.
