I am hoping that we can inject in our newsletter an article about the importance of getting 100% par-ticipation of the Seven Oaks residents in the recy-

cling program. Perhaps you can investigate and give the locations of where the paper drop offs are located. I am hoping that “down the road” Pasco will give up containers for paper and plastic. We had these in West Palm Beach, and I am disappointed that we don’t have them here. If we start overwhelming them, it might force the issue for them to come up with a better solu-tion, and give us containers. Anyhow, just a few of my thoughts.

- A letter from Gail, a resident.

1. Why does Pasco use blue bags instead of bins?Pasco has used blue bags since the inception of our recycling program in 1992. The decision to go to bins had been considered, but under the current garbage hauling system the initial cost to purchase and distribute bins to all our citizens and for haulers to purchase specialized trucks, as well as the cost to initialize, rollout and oversee an education program is prohibitive and cannot be covered without charging our citizens.

2. Why doesn’t Pasco recycle newspapers, mixed paper and/or cardboard at the curb?At this time, Pasco’s Material Recovery Facility (MRF) does not have the space or the equipment to adequately accept delivery or to separate paper from our current recyclables. The MRF would need expan-sion and updating to handle additional recyclables. We do offer drop offs for recyclables including paper and cardboard. The Pasco County schools have an excellent paper recycling program and many of their school sites are open for public drop off. Please visit http://recycle.pasco.k12.fl.us.

3. Can I recycle more than aluminum & metal cans, glass bottles, and #1 and #2 plastic in Pasco? These are the only items that Pasco recycles at this time. However, there are private entities that accept and process other items. Please check your yellow pages for such organizations.

4. Why can’t I recycle more?Recycling is market driven, and not everything has a market. In addition, recyclers usually require large, consistent volumes of quality materials in order to maximize the return from that market. Many programs are too small to take advantage of every market and therefore will limit what they accept for recycling.

5. Which plastic can be recycled? In Pasco we recycle code number #1 or #2. The num-ber is located inside the chasing arrow triangleusually located on the underside of a plastic container. Other plastics are recyclable we just don’t recyclethem here in Pasco. Examples of # 1 and # 2 plastic are drink bottles, milk bottles, detergent bottles, shampoo bottles. Check the bottom of the container and look for a triangle made out of arrows and lookfor the # 1 or # 2 in the triangle. Those are recyclable in our program.

6. Why should I recycle?By recycling, you contribute to a sustainable future. Throwing away an item that can be recycled is awaste! Recycling creates jobs, new useful products, extends the life of Waste-to-Energy facilities, conserves resources, saves energy, reduces pollution, and helps preserve our environment for futuregenerations.

7. What about business or commercial recycling?Pasco County does not require nor offer commercial or business recycling at this time. However, abusiness can engage in recycling on a private basis. The Pasco County recycling office can providebusiness owners helpful information on how to “green up” a business.

8. How much do we recycle?Every year we submit a report to the Florida Depart-ment of Environmental Protection which categorizesour recycling in conjunction with our total municipal solid waste stream (MSW). This report reflectseverything that is recycled in Pasco not just what we recycle in our residential curbside program. In2007 we recycled 33% of our municipal solid waste stream (garbage). In 2007, approximately fortypercent (40%) of what Pasco recycled was construc-tion and demolition debris materials. Other materialsincluded paper and fiber at eight percent (8%) and recyclables like aluminum, glass and plastic and cans(which are included in our residential recyclable pro-gram) at approximately ten percent (10%). Othermaterials recycled included items like scrap metal, textiles, white goods, and miscellaneous items.

9. Can I recycle plastic grocery bags? What about other plastic bags? Some plastic bags are recyclable, but not through Pasco County’s recycling program. You can reusegrocery plastic bags, or drop them off for recycling at area grocery stores. Other plastics should be put inyour regular trash. Plastic bags are a contaminant in our recycle stream. Please help us to keep themout of recycling bins.

10. Can I recycle aerosol cans with steel cans? No. Unfortunately none of our steel can recycling programs accept aerosol cans. You can safely disposeof empty aerosol cans in the trash. If the can is not empty, it is considered hazardous waste, and should

be taken to our household hazardous waste drop off.

11. Can I mix steel and aluminum cans together?Yes. You can mix your steel and aluminum cans in your blue bag.

12. Why should I remove the caps on plastic bottles? The cap is made from a different type of plastic than the bottle, and they are classified as a “contaminate” in the load when left on. Also, removing the caps enables the bottles to be crushed more easily so they occupy less space. Please remove the caps from plastic bottles before recycling.

13. Why do I have to rinse out cans and bottles?Food waste is a contaminate in the recycle stream. It makes processing difficult – for example oil fromfood waste can interfere in the chemical binding process of forming new glass from glass cullet. Inaddition, it attracts bugs and vermin when set out at the curb and can carry these things into ourprocessing facility. Also, at most facilities including ours, the separation of recyclables involves people.

14. Do I have to crush aluminum cans or plastic bottles? No, but we encourage you to crush cans and plastic bottles in order to save space.

15. Do I have to remove labels from jars or bottles? No, you do not need to remove labels from glass, plastic, or steel containers before recycling them. Weask that you remove lids (and discard them), but labels do not need to be removed since they are easilyremoved in the recycling process.

16. Where can I recycle newspapers in Pasco?Pasco County has five drop offs where you can find a newspaper ONLY container. You can also check with private entities like non-profits, churches, etc. Many will recycle paper to raise funds. The PascoCounty schools have an excellent paper recycling program which earns money for the schools. Many oftheir campuses are open for public drop off.

SON: Were you a teacher before a prin-cipal?BJ: Yes, I was a high school choral direc-tor in Dekalb County, (Atlanta) Georgia and a Guidance Counselor for four years in Pasco County.

SON: How long have you been a prin-cipal?BJ: I’ve been a principal for thirteen years and was an assistant principal for eleven years.

SON: You have been at Seven Oaks El-ementary since day one, what made you want to come here? Did you have a choice?BJ: I was the principal at Anclote El-ementary for eight years and knew, after eight years, that my mission had been accomplished there. My professional goals included opening a new school along my principal journey. Yes, I had a choice. I applied, interviewed and was of-fered the principal post at Seven Oaks El-ementary as a new school.

SON: How have you seen yourself grow since being at SOES?BJ: Self-reflection is important, as you know, and I have grown through the

professional growth of my teachers, and the wonderful relationships with my fami-lies and students. Opening a new school and cultivating the culture is paramount to the success of the school commu-nity. Research shows that it takes three years to mold school culture. This school ROCKS!!!

SON: How have you seen the school grow?BJ: Seven Oaks Elementary School is a beacon in our district. Known as a high achieving school in our district, we as-cribe to best practices in teaching, meet-ing the individual needs of students and the welcoming of active participation of our parents in our success as a Five Star School and a State recognized A+ school for five years. SON: What are the visions for SOES in the future?BJ: I want our school to continue to be a shining beacon in our district. We will focus on science lab exploration, Problem Solving/Response to Intervention strate-gies for student achievement and the high level of parent involvement at all levels.

SON: How can the community help SOES?BJ: The community is highly support-ive, active and I encourage the continued participation in all school related activi-ties.SON: What is your favorite time of the day at school?BJ: My favorite time of the day is

when the children arrive in the morning for an active day of learning and explo-ration. In addition, at the end of the day, knowing that all students have arrived home safely to return to me the next morn-ing for another day of learning and joy. I love being the principal of Seven Oaks El-ementary School. Thank you for being an active member on this amazing journey.

RESIDENT COUNCIL UPDATE

By Michael Davis, Resident Council Representative for Shoregrass

The Resident Council meets at The Clubhouse on the first Tuesday

of each month at 7:00PM All residents welcome.

The Seven Oaks Resident Council (RC) is made up of your neighbors who vol-unteer their time to form a communi-

cation vehicle to help link the entire Seven Oaks community.

The RC is designed to consist of one rep-resentative from each of the neighborhoods within Seven Oaks. These representatives are responsible for bringing the concerns of their neighborhood to the RC monthly meetings, which are held on the first Tues-day of the month. As a group, the RC sifts through these concerns and determines if they should be directed toward the various Boards and/or local and state government officials for an appropriate solution. RC representatives utilize various methods of communication to bring information to the community and alert their neighbors about proposed changes to the status quo.

One of the main vehicles of communi-cation for a RC representative is an email contact list. These lists are used to deliver unified community-wide notices regarding information updates, crime alerts, street closings, lost pets, etc. Please be sure your representative has at least one current email address for a member of your household. This will afford us the opportunity to keep you abreast of updates as they occur. The RC will not use your information for commer-cial purposes and individual representatives are instructed not to share email addresses and/or contact information throughout the neighborhood, so you can rest assured that your privacy will be respected. Our com-munity website, www.mysevenoaks.com, is also used by the RC to communicate to the community. The recent upgrade of the website allows the RC to be even more ef-fective. I urge everyone to visit the site and re-register if you have not done so already. The website is used by the RC as a tool to share universal information throughout the community. In addition, several RC repre-sentatives have created subdivision specific forum groups to allow residents to commu-nicate on general non-CDD, RC and SOPOA matters (i.e., birth announcements, items

for sale, etc.)While the technology of today makes it

easier for people to disseminate and receive information without personal contact, on a rare occurrence RC representatives will go door to door to bring information to you, verify your contact information, etc. Please understand if a RC representative is taking their time to go door-to-door, it is for a good reason.

We also welcome all residents to at-tend the aforementioned RC meetings. The RC uses these meetings as a forum to bring recent guest speakers like Florida State Rep-resentative, Will Weatherford; Pasco County Commissioner, Pat Mulieri; Pasco County

Sheriff, Bob White; Pasco County Property Appraiser, Mike Wells, and Florida State Crime Prevention Specialist, Brian MacNeel to the community. The RC also conducts of-ficial Seven Oaks related business at these meetings. One of the primary goals of the RC is to serve as a linchpin between the resi-dents of Seven Oaks and the CDD/SOPOA. You are urged to attend to share your con-cerns, give input and learn first hand about the events affecting your community. Your neighborhood RC representative will send you the “Agenda” for the next Meeting and the “Minutes” from the previous meetings. This information is also found on the web-site under the RC tab.

Over the years, your RC representatives were instrumental in spreading the word about important issues facing the commu-nity. Challenges with the I-75 improvement project, the Bruce B. Downs expansion proj-ect, the Mental Health Facility construction

within Seven Oaks, and community crime prevention, just to name a few. The RC has been instrumental in working with county, city and state officials to convey to those involved the concerns of the residents of Seven Oaks.

We are currently missing Resident Coun-cil Representatives from the following neigh-borhoods: Brookforest, Copperleaf, Coven-try, Fairgate, Lakeside, Silverleaf, Stillbrook, and Villas at Willow Creek. At the very least, RC representatives are required to attend one monthly meeting and forward informa-tion via email to your neighborhoods. Some RC representatives take it upon themselves to do more, but you are not required to.

If you reside in a sub-division that is not currently represented, please contact Chair-man Holly Hill ([email protected]) for fur-ther information.

Seven Oaks is a beautiful community made up of hard working people who want the best for their community. Your Resident Council speaks on your behalf to keep Seven Oaks the gem that it is. The input of every neighborhood is essential to this effort and we need your input to be effective.

I am sure I speak for all the RC repre-sentatives I serve with when I say that we take great pride in living in such a beautiful community and are working hard to keep it this way. With that said, please keep in mind that your active participation is the best in-surance that it will remain that way. Simple things like making sure RC representatives have your contact information, responding to requests for feedback/input and par-ticipating in community related matters is very much appreciated. Please help us, help you…

CLUBHOUSE ANNOUNCEMENTS RESIDENT ANNOUNCEMENTSIn Loving Memory ofCarlie Ulrich

July 27, 2004 –June 11, 2010The Bobcat Team at Seven Oaks Elementa-

ry school is fundraising to donate a picnic table, dubbed “Carlie’s Corner” for all of the school community to enjoy.

Carlie enjoyed having lunch with her family and friends regularly during Kindergar-ten and we felt this would be a fitting way to honor and remember her at our school.

Our fundraising goal is $1200. Any addi-tional funds will be donated to Eagar, Arizona’s High School Disaster Fund to help rebuild the school which was damaged by the plane crash the Ulrich family was involved in.

All donations are greatly appreciated and we thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity. Please make checks payable to SOES. Please remember to include your phone number in the memo line. Please mail all do-nations to Michelle Bergmann Seven Oaks El-ementary School 27633 Mystic Oak Boulevard Wesley Chapel, FL 33544

Q: Why are you interested in the politi-cal position of Pasco County Mosquito Con-trol Commissioner?

A: First of all, I’ve always been interested in public service. I have been told many times that I should run for public office. At this time, in my life, I feel this is the perfect opportunity to give back to the community that has been so good to me. The Mosquito Control Commis-sioners are in charge of an operating budget of over 6 million dollars. In these trying econom-ic times the taxpayers of Pasco County deserve someone that is going to be fiscally responsible with their money while keeping the health and well being of the citizens a top priority. I’m that person.

Q: What are your professional qualifica-tions for the office you seek?

A: I hold a bachelors degree from the Uni-versity of Central Florida where I was also a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. I’m the small business owner of a health care company and a health care consulting and placement firm. My extensive business back-ground gives me the managerial, budgetary, and leadership experience to get the job done. I also enjoy serving the community. Currently I volunteer for the Seven Oaks Elementary School Advisory Council and volunteer coach at Wesley Chapel Athletic Association. I’ve belonged to various Chambers of Commerce and was the 2006 North Tampa Chamber Member of the Year. I’ve been endorsed by Representative Kevin Ambler and former State Representative Ken Littlefield.

Q: If you were in the position right now, what would you be doing?

A: I would be reviewing the current bud-get line by line and looking for areas where we could save the taxpayers money. I’d be making sure that there is not any wasteful spending go-ing on. If there was needless spending going on I would clean it up. I’d also be listening to the citizens about their needs, wants and con-cerns.

Q: Is there anything the community can do to help you succeed?

A: I appreciate you asking that. The main thing I will ask of the community is to vote for me on November 2nd. We can always use volunteers. We will be looking for people to walk the community with us so we can get in-formation about our campaign to more people. I will also be looking for people to help at the polls during early voting and November 2nd. Also, if you would put a bumper sticker on your car or a sign in your yard that would be great. Contact me and I will deliver them to you. As always, we appreciate any volunteers or campaign donations.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

DISCOVERY POINT SEVEN OAKSThe Discovery Point Child Development Center has been

proud to be part of the Seven Oaks community for 4 years. It has been our pleasure to play such an important role in

providing care and education to all of our children. We have a team of dedicated professionals whose goals are simple. That is to provide care to our children rooted in what we call the “Three A’s”. Attention, Affection and Approval are cornerstones of what have made us the loving and nurturing center that our fami-lies have come to admire, trust and respect. As an educational based Child Care Center, we incorporate fun, love and happiness into our daily routines. We provide care for infants as young as 6 weeks old and offer before and after school care for kids up to 12 years old. Our Lead Teachers are all CDA credentialed and all of our teachers have passed rigorous background screenings as well as being certified in CPR and First Aid. Our programs feature hot lunches and daily snacks included in our weekly tuition. In addition to our infant and preschool classes, we are pleased to be one of the areas most sought after VPK programs, offering this free program to any child who turns 4 years old by September 1st of that school year. In our 4 plus years of opera-tion we have received a tremendous number of referrals from cur-rent and past parents as well as the enrollment of siblings into our vari-ous programs. We are proud of these recommendations and are committed to always provide the level of excellence, care and love that Discovery Point Seven Oaks is known for.

In 2007, the Discovery Point Seven Oaks was named the win-ner of the President’s Award as the top rated Discovery Point in the nation. To be recognized from the National Headquarters in Atlanta, GA as the “best of the best” in our first full year of op-eration was an accomplishment that we will take pride in forever.

As the owners of this family owned business, we would like to take this opportunity to thank the hundreds of families who have allowed us the privilege to care for your children. I hope that all of you know that we are genuinely proud and honored to be an important part of your lives. All of your kids are “our” kids, too. We love them truly and again thank you for being part of our lives.

For those of you we have not yet met, we invite you to stop by and take a tour of our school or contact us at 994-2700. We will be hosting an OPEN HOUSE on Saturday Aug 7th from 1-3 pm -please feel free to stop in and meet the team.Sincerely,

Mike Keeney and Gayle Hahn, Owners

Bamboo-Fusion Therapy is a new innovative way to provide deep tis-sue massage (or relaxation) by using hand crafted; custom designed warm bamboo/rattan tools of many different sizes.. Each Bamboo stick was hand-crafted to glide smoothly over the body and to enhance many hand techniques that many clients have grown to love. Created by Nathalie Cecelia in 2005, bamboo-fusion is quickly becoming one of the most preferred deep tissue and relaxation techniques in the mas-sage industry since Hot Stone.

This wonderful luxurious full body treatment uses warm bamboo tools de-signed for relaxation or deep tissue work. If you love deep massages you will LOVE this new modality. This massage is a wonderful way to get that deep tissue feel without the soreness that can often accompany traditional deep tissue massage. The bamboo sticks hold heat and provide maxi-mum comfort as they are applied with pres-sure and movement to tight muscles. Sooth-ing rhythmic strokes apply deep pressure with unique relaxation simultaneously. Bam-boo fusion massage has many benefits that include, but are not lim-ited to:

- Extreme sensation of relaxation and well-being

- Relieves tightness in muscles and tendons

- Regenerates and revitalizes tired aching muscles

- Skin feels more supple- Allows for a safer and more effec-

tive deep tissue massage- Relaxes the body and mind

Bamboo fusion is an excellent technique for most people, but there are increased risks for certain groups that are affected by various medical conditions. Massage enthusiasts with

any of the following conditions should consult with a physician prior to bam-boo fusion massage:

- Heart conditions- Diabetes- Osteoporosis- Sensitive skin- Pregnancy- Neuropathy

Bamboo fusion massage has been only around for a couple years and is growing popularity fast. Today, many luxury spas are catching on to the rev-olutionary concept of bamboo fusion, however; pricing may be restrictive to most people in today’s difficult econo-my. The good news is that highly ex-perienced and knowledgeable massage therapists are continuing education in the practice of bamboo fusion. This

new technique is now being offered in some discount massage businesses that maintain high quality, but that also have reasonable prices suited for a dif-ficult economy.

Anyone that is interested in expe-riencing this new exciting and exotic massage technique can contact Ideal Massage at 813-406-4418 or look online at www.myidealmassage.com with Dawn, Heather and Hope. Ideal Massage is ideally located in the Seven Oak’s Summergate Professional Cen-ter located in Wesley Chapel.
