To better support our parishioners who experience hearing loss, we

have an Assistive Listening System available, which can be used in the Church and Geary Hall. If you have telecoil-equipped hearing aids or cochlear implants you would use the neck loop plugged into the receiver body pack, after switching your hearing aids to the tcoil setting. If you do not have hearing aids or no telecoil setting, the alternative is to plug headphones or ear buds into the receiver body pack. The neck loop, headphones and receivers need to be checked out—can use your own headphones or ear buds. Please see an Usher or Sacristan.

WELCOME THE COMMUNITY

Dear Parishioners,

The holy season of Lent will begin this coming week with the celebration of Ash Wednesday. It is shaped for us, in a particular way, with the three-pronged discipline of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. The season is meant to prepare us to celebrate The Paschal Mystery; namely the suffering, death, and Resurrection of Christ. As well, it is the season in which the preparation for those to be fully initiated at Easter intensifies, and the various rites marking their preparation occur during Lent. The Rite of Election takes place on the First Sunday of Lent, and the Scrutinies (renunciation and expulsions of evil) take place on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of Lent. Mrs. Sudha Deane, our sole catechumen, will be fully initiated at this year’s Easter Vigil on April 20. Lent is a penitential season; it is a forty-day retreat that focuses on conversion, penance, and contrition. The liturgical color of purple, and the visual simplicity of the church interior, particularly the sanctuary, are meant to convey our serious attempt to deepen our prayer life, refocus our will, and cast off our sins and habits that lead us to act outside the boundaries of God’s order. Lent contains within it a variety of practices to help us in this spiritual endeavor. 1. Every Wednesday during Lent we will continue the practice of

“The Light is On,” in which the church will be open from 6:00-8:00 PM for the celebration of Reconciliation.

2. Every Friday evening our weekly simple soup supper takes place in the parish center at 6:30 PM, followed by the Stations of the Cross at 7:30 PM in the church. Reconciliation will be available at the conclusion of the Stations.

3. Our annual parish mission runs on April 1-3 and will be directed by Fr. Patrick Dooling, a priest of the Diocese of Monterey. The mission will meet in the early afternoon (1:00-2:00 PM) and in the evening (7:00-8:00 PM). Fr. Dooling will preach at all of the previous weekend Masses.

4. Catholic Relief Services collection boxes will be available for distribution on Ash Wednesday and the 1st Sunday of Lent. They will provide us with a daily rhythm of placing our financial gifts to support the most materially needy.

5. Our annual Lenten Reconciliation Services will be offered on Tuesday, March 26 at 7:00 PM, and Monday, April 8 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM for our school students and parishioners.

In all of these ways, we can become more attentive to deepen our personal relationship with Christ and put into action our Christian faith.

—Father Gary Thomas
