This longevity is directly attributable to Orbit’s strong market presence, based on its ability to respond quickly to customer requirements, backed by a comprehensive stock range sourced from a wholly-owned manufacturing site in China and key third- party suppliers. Orbit operates out of 75,000 sq ft premises in Birmingham, consisting of a factory, two warehouses, offices and a showroom. Approximately £4 million in stock can be held and an average 7,500 garments a day are shipped around the world. The offices accommodate an ‘in house’ design facility along with quality control, customer service, accounts and distribution teams. There are also integrated computer links to its supply chain. Orbit still maintains a small manufacturing capability, which is largely used for alterations and garment decoration but, as with the market in general, the majority of manufacturing now takes place in China. The difference with Orbit is that it drew on its vast experience as a UK manufacturing company to set up its own wholly owned and managed ten-acre purpose-built facility CIRS, Shandong Clothing Company Ltd, near Qingdao, Shandong Province, back in 2003. This facility makes products exclusively for Orbit across the UK and in Europe. In today’s fiercely competitive market, maintaining a competitive edge is increasingly difficult as Ken Elavia, Orbit’s sales and marketing director, explained: “It is essential for companies to have access to accurate and up-to-date information, if effective decisions are to be taken. In our case we were spending too much time preparing information, using spreadsheets to supplement the weaknesses of our existing, and outmoded, business system. “If a company wants to grow with its existing partners while attracting new opportunities in a hugely competitive environment, it is increasingly important to provide clients with robust and timely information without spending hours compiling spreadsheets. We needed a system that would work with the business, not against it, so we set out to find a fully integrated business solution designed for the clothing sector, using a central database. “Orbit as a business had fallen behind the level of customer service required in a dynamic market, so the Aria system offered an ideal solution for Orbit. It also provides us the platform for certain business disciplines that were perhaps lacking, as everything was done using spreadsheets created by individual managers without the required integration to provide a co-ordinated approach. “Since the Aria system implementation, we’ve been working towards rolling out this platform across the whole business, to provide the required levels of service demanded by our customers. We accept we still have a way to go but with Aria we have a solid platform and structure to work towards.” Aria Apparel was selected after an evaluation process, which included an on-site workshop with Orbit personnel, who were able to examine the system’s functionality and understand how simple it is to master. Aria’s comprehensive software is ideally suited to the workwear and corporate clothing sectors because it has been specifically designed for the clothing and footwear industry by people with real- world garment sector experience. As a fully integrated system, there’s no need to cobble reports together from spreadsheets and random bits of paper: the system is designed to support both the internal information needs of the business and the need to supply timely and accurate data to customers. Aria has over 450 customers using the system all over the world, meaning the system has been built round the requirements of clothing and footwear companies working in today’s tough market. Having such an extensive client base means Aria’s staff are aware of industry changes as they occur and can respond quickly to add new features as required. It also allows Aria’s customers to benefit from the company’s wide experience in the industry and this shines through in the robustness and reliability of the software itself. The proof that the system works can be found in the number of clients who have built their businesses on the information foundation that Aria supplies and who regard it as being an essential factor in their continuing success. Ken Elavia believes that Aria was the obvious choice for Orbit International as wholesale suppliers to the sector, adding: “Having Aria in Orbit brings a newfound discipline to all aspects of our business, covering Orbit International on song thanks to Aria Aria’s fully integrated business solution is helping Orbit International to maintain its competitive edge in the marketplace Aria’s system is designed to support both the internal information needs of the business and the need to supply timely and accurate data to customers It is essential for companies to have access to accurate and up-to-date information, if effective decisions are to be taken

basic stock keeping, stock forecasting and improved visibility for our telesales team. Once we complete our current stock-take, the information provided to customerswill be based around a factual and exact position covering not only currentavailability but also incoming stock due dates.

“We can more readily identify our stock and service shortcomings and, as we allknow, if you recognise and embrace these weaknesses you can address them.”

The Aria system is also ideal for the sharp end of the market, with the companiesproviding managed workwear and corporate clothing services to end-users. A bolt-on Wardrobe Management Module allows authorised clients access to custominformation allowing them to understand where and how their company clothing isbeing utilised across the whole organisation.

“After the system went live, it allowed us to see new opportunities to change theway the business operates,” Ken says. “These changes will mean that we canstreamline what is currently a paper chase into something far more acceptable toboth our customers and our own operational needs. Having a system that can beused proactively rather than reacting to events will be a significant benefit.”
