Have you ever looked up the meaning of your name and discovered that it matched up well with your personality? In the Bible, God is revealed with different names. Each one gives us a glimpse of His nature —Who He is and How He relates to us. There is power in His name. There is promise in His name. As we continue our study through the Gospel of Mark, we’ll witness how Jesus — the Name above all Names — is the perfect picture of the great names of God. Invite your friends and family to join us for this inspiring series.

02/02/14 Mark 5 / El Elyon / Almighty / Karl Schad, Senior Pastor

02/09/14 Mark 6 / Yahweh / Present / Dr. Ladd Haverly, Executive Pastor

02/16/14 Mark 7 / Jehovah Rophe / Healer / Karl Schad, Senior Pastor

02/23/14 Mark 8 / Jehovah Jireh / Provider / Tom Harland, Family Pastor

Gateway is excited to host our annual Gateway “Souper Bowl” Tailgate on Sunday, February 2. That is Super Bowl Sunday, so dress out in your favorite team jersey—decorate your vehicles in tailgate-style, too!—and come ready for a fantastic time at the Gateway Tailgate. Immediately after the 11:00 service, we will head outside for food (including the Great Chili Cook-Off), fellowship, fight songs, football trivia contest, Guess-timation contest, and a passing accuracy competition. For the tailgate lunch, Gateway will provide the dogs, brats and drinks — you bring snacks and a friend! This is a perfect opportunity to bring lost people into God’s family! We will pack it up by 2:00 pm so you can go watch the Super Bowl at home.

We are again asking for canned soup donations (bring to church on the 2nd) to help replenish the empty shelves at Circle of Concern’s pantry in Valley Park. “Mr. Touchdown” will resume his annual appearance to weigh the total amount of canned soup donations—let’s see if we can get at least 750 pounds!

Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. 2 Cor. 9:10-11

This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God's people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, men will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! 2 Cor. 9:12-15

I am blessed, proud, and honored to serve with such an amazing church family!

“If you look at the world, you'll be distressed. If you look within, you'll be depressed.

If you look at God, you'll be at rest.” ―Corrie ten Boom

I am not a fan of heights, but I love mountains. In fact, I love them so much that I will climb to the highest place even though it makes me tremble. Ironic? Well, I simply find the risk is outweighed by the grandeur. Our beginnings seem small when we behold the bigger picture.

Sometime we simply need a change in perspective from our busy lives. Look up, to the BIGGEST picture! Do not miss out on an opportunity to love God and man because of your past or present circumstances, whatever they may be! Do not miss GOD today!

Psalm 121 // A Song of Ascents. I lift my eyes to the hills—

from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

I pray that we would be a people who lift our eyes, a church that shifts our focus from this world, our mistakes, our troubles, and trusts in someone who is greater and BIGGER. And that we live to please and honor Him and enjoy the fullness of life in the peace of Christ. ~ Ragan

We don't have the words to thank all of you for all of the prayers and support our family has been given over the last months. Finding out you have cancer is such devastating news but our church family blessed us with so much encouragement and love, it made it a bearable season in our lives. Thanks to all of you that provided meals, kept us in your daily prayers, and sent encouraging texts and phone calls. Thanks from the bottom of our hearts to Karl and Carie Schad for praying with us the morning of my surgery. Above all else, we want to thank our Almighty Father. In the span of 5 short weeks, He led me to the discovery of a lump, surgery, and the wonderful blessing of being completely cured of breast cancer. Miracles still happen, and our loving Father blessed our family with a true Christmas miracle. His grace and mercy are overwhelming, and during every terrifying moment of our journey He enveloped us with His peace. Our Father is truly amazing! With Love, The Reeves Family

Thank you for the plant sent in memory of Larry’s mother. Thank you all so much for your prayers and concern during her illness also. It is comforting to know we have such a caring church family. Larry & Sue Steinmeyer & Family

Any of our pastors are available to speak with you about your relation-ship with Jesus Christ. Please call the church office at (314) 821-2156 to speak with one.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever BELIEVES in him will not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

“REPENT, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord…” (Acts 3:19)

“If you CONFESS with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, then you will be saved.“ (Romans 10:9)

“Repent and BE BAPTIZED, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.” (Acts 2:38)

What on earth am I here for? That’s a question we’ve all asked ourselves at one time. The answer is to worship God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. He created you and longs to have a relationship with you. God made a way for us to find forgiveness, peace, and meaning through His Son, Jesus Christ. We will never find or fulfill our purpose in this life until we let Jesus rescue us from our sin and become the leader of our life. So how do we do that?

Updates are needed! We will be sending two shipments of care packages to our own Gateway military members in 2014. In order to do this, we need to update our list of Gateway family members who are currently serving in the military (either at home or abroad). We want to make sure we do not forget anyone or waste valuable postage sending to vacated addresses. If any of the following situations apply, please contact Buddy Erker ([email protected] or 636-349-2271) and let him know the name, address, birth date, where they are stationed, and what their military rank/title is at this time. Notify Buddy if:

You have a family member (spouse, child, sibling, other relative, etc) who is serving in the military, OR Your family member has been discharged, has had an address change, or other change in status, OR You know of any Gateway family member who has recently entered the military

We do not want to forget anyone! If you know of someone who fits these criteria, but may not read this newsletter, please share this info.

February 02: Canned goods (i.e. soup, meat, vegetables, fruit) February 09: Toiletries (for men, women, and children) February 16: Dry Goods (i.e. spaghetti, rice, flour, etc.) February 23: Paper Goods (i.e. paper towels, bath tissue, Ziploc bags)

We have many Gateway families in need so we need to keep the shelves stocked. Drop off donations in the baskets at the missions table in the hallway.

The deadline for the applications for the 2 summer/fall grants ($300 each) is March 16. If you are planning on taking a long-term mission trip in the summer or fall of 2014, email or call one of the following World Impact team members and ask for an application.

Pam Erker: [email protected]; 636-349-2271 Sheila Putnam: [email protected]; 636-294-5656

The Armed Forces Care mission will be collecting items during the month of March for our Gateway service personnel. This is one of only 2 collections for our own troops in 2014.

Steve Primm and Allie Borders were each awarded a long-term mission grant.

Allie Borders, now serving in Guatemala, wrote this note to her church family: Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I’m so blessed and humbled at the fact you truly believe in me. I was blown away when Karl called and told me how much Gateway was wanting to support me. Thank you. I have one more request: please continue to keep me in your prayers. I can easily get very comfortable in what I am doing and begin to rely on myself and not God. Pray that I would rely on God’s strength and not my own. Pray that my heart remains soft and open to God’s leading and that I would get all that God wants me to get out of this season. Thank you. I am so blessed by you!

Steve Primm was in Haiti January 14-20 to assist in an orphanage outside of Port-au-Prince; he helped prepare for a Tennessee medical team’s visit before doctors arrived. During the clinic itself, he assisted with security to help keep things orderly as people arrived to be seen by the doctors, in addition to running errands for the doctors and helping the orphanage staff with their needs. Playing games and holding the orphans was a special blessing.

Kids are fun—Kids are exciting—Ministry to kids has eternal rewards—You get to wear a brightly colored vest or apron—Hugs and smiles are free—We have a great team!

Do you need any more great reasons to join our team? How about the fact that you get to share your faith every week in fun and interesting ways—You never have to guess what the kids are thinking because they’ll be sure to let you know—You get to know the great stories of the Bible in fresh, new ways—It is a challenge that will help you grow your knowledge, skills, and love in more ways than you could ever imagine!

Applications to get involved are available at all three children’s ministry check-ins, nursery, preschool and elementary. Of course, background checks are necessary for all regular volunteers. We take the safety and security of our kiddos very seriously.

Questions? Contact Shari Borders, Children’s Pastor, at 314-821-2156, [email protected], or sign up on The Card in the weekly bulletin. We look forward to you joining the team!

Mama left me in the church nursery. She said, “You can stay here and play.”

I was very afraid, but you comforted me, And Mama found Christ that day.

At least once a month in the nursery, You served God by caring for me

So Mama could attend church and learn to make Our home everything it should be.

There were those who said, “I’m too busy,” Or, “I don’t want to miss church today;

I’m too young; I’m too old; I’ve done my part – The nursery? Please, don’t ask me to stay.”

But you said, “No, I’m not too busy. I’m just the right age I know.

I could never do enough for the King that I serve. When you need me in the nursery I’ll go.”

My life might have been so different If you had not answered God’s plea

For workers to serve where the need is so great, To care for little people like me.

Thank you for keeping the nursery. Mama taught me to follow Christ, too.

Many people had a part, but the most special one To me will always be you.

Happy February! After making it through a busy January, you deserve chocolate. I know I do—after taking the holiday extra weight off, it is just in time for the Valentine sales of chocolate! Join me, won’t you?

This conversation makes me think of the Collide Live series we are going to be working through. “Vain Pursuit” is all about how we buy into lies that our enemy tells us. We all have a God-shaped hole in our lives that we often try to fill up with vanity (stuff that does not matter). We will be looking at the problem we are all facing and the solution that is available to all of us this month. It comes just in time for our Purity Retreat February 28-March 2.

PARENTS: If you do not have your students signed up for this weekend retreat, please do not wait any longer. I am excited for this incredible weekend that we have put together with your MS and HS student in mind:

A band called Hearts of Saints

Three different main stage speakers (Karl Schad included)

Six different breakout sessions

Crazy Host Homes for sleeping and playing all over Saint Louis

This is going to be the best weekend retreat Gateway has seen yet.

If you would like to open up your home for hosting a small group of students, please let Josh know as soon as possible. ~ Josh
