When you are about to run a race, it begins with this simple command: “On Your Mark.” It signifies that it’s time to find the starting point and prepare yourself for the race ahead. As we enter this New Year, we will be starting a 16-week series through the Gospel of Mark.

This year will be different. At the beginning of a New Year, this is a common sentiment. We evaluate where we are and where we want to be. Then we chart a course—busting out the kitten calendar we received at the White Elephant party, or purchasing the latest app for that. We write, type, text, and highlight, with the good intention of a year that will be different. We drop cable TV and crunch our budget. We buy a membership at Gold’s gym. We pick up a Joy FM Bible reading plan. We create a “Quit List”—no more smoking, gambling, cursing, and bare-knuckle brawling (…and that’s the gal’s list). Good goals, but Jesus’ goals are far greater and more glorious... “….Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 ‘The time has come,’ he said. ‘The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!’ 16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 ‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will make you fishers of men.’" Mark 1:14-17 The time has come. This is a perfect time to take stock of our lives and turn over every area to God—that’s repentance. It’s also the perfect time to place complete trust and believe in the effectual power of the Gospel to change us into the image of Christ. And it’s time to follow. To walk with Jesus and let Him transform our nets into a network that makes fully-devoted disciples. This is the difference—that will make all the difference.

Following Jesus,

Pastor Karl

Turn MY eyes upon Jesus; look full in HIS wonderful face And the things of earth will grow strangely dim

In the light of HIS glory and grace

I believe the words in this simple chorus could empower us to get our lives on track in this new year. More than that, if we follow them, we will be put in a position to change, enabling us to see and hear God's voice.

Have you ever been locked into a conversation? You find yourself looking the person in the face and listening to their every word, losing all external sense of your surroundings. On the flip side, have you ever been in a conversation where you are not tuned in? Every sound and person passing by steals your attention.

This year, engage the Lord. Open His word and be a captive audience to God's heart and ways. Whatever you think will make you happy this year needs to be born from, centered on, and engulfed in your relationship with Jesus. Achieve and exceed your goals for 2014, building a treasure worthy of God’s kingdom and not man’s. Allow the world to "dim" in His presence.

Matthew 6: 19-21 says: “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart is also.”

The truth of this Word, spoken by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, applies to all aspects of our life. Our heart will follow our investments: time, money, love, etc.

I am praying that, as we begin 2014, each believer at Gateway would face up to Jesus, immerse ourselves in God's grace, truth, and mercy, and walk in the light of His love as children.

~ Ragan

The National Sanctity of Life Sunday is Sunday, January 19. During the entire month of January, the Life Team will be collecting the following items for the PRC and Thrive: Pack-n-plays (new); diapers (especially size 1 & 4); baby toiletries (body wash, lotion, shampoo); bottles; wipes; crib sheets. All donations will be collected in the bin at the Missions Area at the end of the long hallway.

Please pray for the following people who have recently lost loved ones: Barry Jeralds (aunt); Chris Ullrich (cousin); Flo Goad (nephew); Tim Worley (father); Crisman Family (WeeMo: son, grandson, nephew); Larry Steinmeyer (mother).

Tuesday, January 14—F.U.N. at Meramec Caverns: Head south for a trip to Meramec Caverns! This trip is educational and fun for all ages. We will meet at Gateway at 8:30 am and caravan/carpool to the caverns.

In order to get Meramec’s group rate, we need at least 15 people to attend. Group rates are $14.00 for adults; $10.00 for 9-12 graders; $8.00 for 7-8 graders; and $7.00 for kids ages 5-11. Please RSVP by January 7 on the Gateway to F.U.N. Facebook page or to Carrie Imhoff at [email protected].

Friday, January 24 (date changed)—F.U.N. for Moms: Join us for our second Mom's night out at 7:00 pm at Cracker Barrel (yum!) in Fenton. Please invite your friends for this child-free evening, whether or not they homeschool. We will have dinner, look around the shop, and have some great conversation. See you there!

Brick and mortar libraries are not a thing of the past; they are actually thriving. The St. Louis County Library Headquarters is just a short drive from Gateway. So, Wednesday, January 29, Young at Heart will visit for a tour and presentation of all that our public libraries offer here in St. Louis County. Whether you want to learn what you can find in person or what you can access online from home, you likely will learn some thing new. Reading materials, author visits and presentations, book discussions, computer instruction, or planned group activities—libraries are alive and well.

The Young at Heart, Gateway’s men and women 55+, will meet at Gateway at 9:30 am to carpool to the County Library HQ at 1640 So. Lindbergh in Frontenac. Following our time there, we will have lunch in the area (tentatively planned at Schneithorst’s) which will be your only expense. Join us to check out the library on January 29!

Check out the women’s Bible studies/groups happening on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights in 2014 by picking up a WNL and/or Adults brochure in the Nook. Paula Reed teaches a class for women at the 9:45 hour on Sundays; Carie Schad and Allison Huey will be leading a fun course on living in Bible times on Wednesday nights this spring. We also are working on details for a daytime women’s Bible study.

SAVE THE DATE: Titus 2 Workshop—Thursday March 6, 6:30-9:00 pm. This is an evening for Gateway women who would like insight and wisdom on parenting. There will be several stations for attendees to visit where they can get some of their parenting questions answered by other "seasoned" women in our church family. Childcare will be provided. Put this on your calendar! More details to follow.

New offering envelopes for the New Year are available in the Nook area. Pick up a box for yourself or your family to use during this year.

Thank you so very much for the beautiful plant we received from our church family. We so appreciate the love, support, prayers and cards we received. All of this has helped us through the earthly loss of dad/grandpa. Thank you so much. Tim and Janelle Worley

Lunch served after services to you on Sunday, Jan. 5!

Any of our pastors are available to speak with you about your relation-ship with Jesus Christ. Please call the church office at (314) 821-2156 to speak with one.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever BELIEVES in him will not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

“REPENT, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord…” (Acts 3:19)

“If you CONFESS with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, then you will be saved.“ (Romans 10:9)

“Repent and BE BAPTIZED, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.” (Acts 2:38)

What on earth am I here for? That’s a question we’ve all asked ourselves at one time. The answer is to worship God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. He created you and longs to have a relationship with you. God made a way for us to find forgiveness, peace, and meaning through His Son, Jesus Christ. We will never find or fulfill our purpose in this life until we let Jesus rescue us from our sin and become the leader of our life. So how do we do that?

Kids are fun – Kids are exciting – Ministry to kids has eternal rewards – You get to wear a brightly-colored vest or apron – Hugs and smiles are free — We have a great team!

Do you need any more great reasons to join our team? How about the fact that you get to share your faith every week in fun and interesting ways – You never have to guess what the kids are thinking because they will be sure to let you know – You get to know the great stories of the Bible in fresh, new ways — It is a challenge that will help you grow your knowledge, skills, and love in more ways than you could ever imagine!

Applications to get involved are available at all three children’s ministry check-ins—nursery, preschool and elementary. Of course, background checks are necessary for all regular volunteers; we take the safety and security of our kiddos very seriously.

Questions? Contact Shari Borders, Children’s Pastor, at 314-821-2156, [email protected], or sign up on The Card in the weekly bulletin. We look forward to you joining our team!

Happy New Year from Collide Student Ministry! It is our goal each year for students to COLLIDE with the love of Jesus Christ. We love to see that happen, and then for them to turn around and push that love out for another student to Collide with them and Jesus. Will you join us in praying for that to happen this year?

This January we are kicking off the year with a series on the armor of God. It is called “Call of Duty.” We are really excited about this series because we believe that the students are always involved with spiritual warfare. Satan is constantly trying to get a foothold and we want to equip you and your students with the power of God, His Church and weapons for when they to go to war.

Another issue our students face each day is how they are wired. God designed us all to be attracted to other people. But He also gave us some rules and regulations for us to obey in order to have healthy relationships. Sometimes it feels like war. To stay pure, it takes fighting. And it is worth fighting for the love that God has in mind for us. Our spring retreat for the year is a Purity Retreat designed specifically for Middle School and High School students. Yes, we do break them up in appropriate age and gender subgroups for certain topics. The retreat dates are Friday to Sunday, February 28-March 2.

The total cost for the retreat is $100; a nonrefundable $30 deposit is due January 22. If you do not get registered by that date, the cost will go up to $120. Contact me with any questions.

Parents/Adults, if you would like to host a group of students to sleep at your house during the retreat weekend,

please let Josh know as soon as possible.

It is going to be a fantastic year! We look forward to what God has in mind for the

students around Saint Louis!

~ Josh

P.S.: Parents, don’t forget our lightning meeting (kids are welcome) on Sunday, January 5, after 3rd service in the Warehouse to share info on our ministry plans!

Thank you SHINE students for a great job in the Christmas musical! You all did a wonderful job and it was fun performing with you. We will be taking time off from SHINE for most of January; however, our Spring Musical Student/Parent Informational Meeting will be on Sunday, January 26, after church. All of the details for the Spring Musical will be provided at the Informational Meeting. All students in 6th - 12th grade are invited to participate in SHINE. If you have any questions between now and the January 26 informational meeting, please contact Laura Fletcher at 314-378-2706 (note: this is a new phone number) or by email at [email protected].
