St. Mark’s Preschool Board Report In operation for over forty years, St. Mark’s Day School has provided an early educa-tional experience for many children in our community. Anxious to recommit to the continua-tion and updating of our school, the governing board (Father Jim Schumard, Pat Hrnicek, Mandy McFee (Director and Teacher), Donna Mathern, Edie Bennett, and Audrey Cotherman) attended a retreat in early August. Our goal was to revise and refine the bylaws, mission, vision and set out goals for operations. Since the inception of St. Mark’s Day School, the world of preschools has changed. The expecta-tions for children leaving preschools and entering Kindergarten have increased dramatically; more skills in reading, writing and mathematics are expected. Social skills remain of great im-portance. St. Mark’s day school has been working to keep pace with these changes. Our next goals are to solidify our commitment to both the educational and spiritual values that are the hallmark of St. Mark’s Day School. Among the changes suggested are the following:
Changing our name to St. Mark’s Preschool (from St. Mark’s Day School- to avoid con-
fusion with those who think we have a day care center)
Adding a spiritual component (child’s chapel) to the week
Creating academic, social, physical and spiritual goals that are clearly defined and
known to both our parents and our church
Looking for a good preschool curriculum in reading and math skills so that our teachers can provide the best learning opportunities to our children
Looking for funding to help pay our teachers a higher salary so that they are in line with
others at church related preschools
Looking for more ways to fund the school- we currently need more money than we earn
to operate the school- (necessitating fund raising activities) Adopt a new vision statement: Into Preschool, Out to Kindergarten! The notes of our meeting are posted in the coffee area at St. Mark’s. We are excited to move St. Mark’s Preschool forward; continuing its long and proud tradi-tion of preparing students for Kindergarten remains our goal. Please help us as we move our preschool forward to serve new generations of children; we ask for the St. Mark’s com-munities continuing support! This St. Mark’s outreach touches the lives of many! Send feedback or ideas to Donna Mathern.
“In to preschool, out to kindergarten!”

Discernment Committee Update In May, Lara Gilbert’s discernment committee recom-
mended to St. Mark’s Vestry that she continue the pro-
cess to ordination as a priest. The Vestry accepted the
committee’s recommendation and moved forward
recommending Lara to the Diocesan Commission on
Ministry. Unofficially, she has been accepted into the
process, but formal approval and the final dotting of “i’s”
and crossing of “t’s” is not complete. She is enrolled in
Iona and will begin her training this fall. We all look
forward to this continuing journey with Lara.
Memorial Flower List

Grant information from Episcopal Diocesan Foundation
We are excited to report that we just recently received a grant from the Episcopal Diocesan Foundation for architectural fees to design a new entrance closer to the back parking lot. Access to the church from this parking lot through the kitchen has been a problem and not a very appealing entry to a beautiful church. The architectural firm of Hein/Bond will be working with us on a preliminary design for a new entrance somewhere on the south side complete with new bathrooms on the first floor. We also received a grant from the Episcopal Diocesan Foundation and some parish donors for a children’s play area adjacent to the church. Therefore, we hope to incorporate this play area into the design.

Altar Guild Greetings from the altar guild! For those of you who aren't aware, we are now a wonderful mixture of men and women preparing for ser-vices. However at present there are only 6 active members serving! If this ministry might be calling you, please contact Fr. Jim or Claudia Wilson. Also, we are always in need of larger vases as we take the altar flowers to the hos-pital! Please - no bud vases as we have too many to count! Thanks every-
one. Claudia Wilson
A Martin Luther King, Jr.
The contemporary church is often a weak, ineffectual voice with an
uncertain sound. It is so often the arch-supporter of the statue quo. Far
from being disturbed by the presence of the church, the power structure of the average community is consoled by the church’s silent
and often vocal sanction of things as they are. But the judgement of God is upon the church as never before.
If the church of today does not recapture the sacrificial spirit of the early church, it will lose its authentic
ring, forfeit the loyalty of millions, and be dismissed as an irrelevant
social club.
