Neal Auction Company is pleased to present property from the Lee B. Anderson Estate Collection, a rich and densely layered treasure trove of 19th century furniture, paintings and decorative arts removed from Mr. Anderson’s c. 1855 Manhattan townhouse. Anderson is widely considered one of the foremost collectors of Gothic Revival in America. In The Gothic Revival Style in America, 1830-1870, the seminal 1976 work on the subject, Katherine S. Howe and David B. Warren begin their acknowledgments, “A few lenders deserve special thanks: Lee B. Anderson, who probably knows more about America’s Gothic Revival than anyone else, has shared both his knowledge and his collection with us.” In her 1987 New York Times article “Evocative Gothic: Revival Amid the Gloom,” Patricia Leigh Brown writes that Anderson began his collection of Gothic furniture in the early 1970s, finding it “tranquil and restful” and attracted to its “sculptural quality,” matching his collection of Romantic paintings. In obsession: collectors and their passions, Stephen Callaway describes Anderson, “He had a great eye, even better judgment, and an amount of daring, buying works just before they became fashionable.” The Lee B. Anderson Estate Collection now includes objects that refer to nearly all aspects of material culture from antiquity to early 20th c. aestheticism.

collection of Prince Duan Aixinjueluo Zaiyi (1856-1922); a rare and unusual zitan table, once owned by the Empress Dowager Cixi (1835-1908) and gifted to Prince Duan; a 17th/18th c. gilt lacquer stool and a pair of Qianlong marked zitan Buddhist lions owned by Prince Aixinjueluo Pujun (1885-1942, briefly heir to the Tongzhi throne); and more, including a pair of late Ming/early Qing huanghuali horseshoe back armchairs; a Qing brass-mounted jichimu horseshoe back armchair; four Qing huanghuali stools; a huanghuali painting table; and a zitan altar table.
