From the Pastor’s Desk Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Theme: “Family Ties” My dear brothers and sisters: on this twenty third Sunday in ordinary time, we are called to reflect on what ignites or gives meaning to life. Take a moment to think about one or

two things you will want to surrender that could contribute to either your sadness or joy?

What are one or two values you will like to defend up until death? Paul Tillich would call

this “ultimate concern.” Paul meant, that which gives us meaning, security, and simply

keeping us going from day to day.

There are many things which seek to be our “ultimate concern” and light up our lives.

In our affluent society, much is assigned to material possessions and money. We come

to believe that we are what we have. We worship youth and good looks. We honor

intelligence. We cultivate celebrity. Most of us however would probably mention a

concern closer to home—we have lots of emotional investments in our family ties. We make enormous sacrifices for loved ones. No doubt, we would even lay down our lives for

those in our intimate circle. The tragedy and pain of broken families only serves to

highlight just how important are the ties that are within families.

contribuir a tu tristeza o alegría?

¿Debemos realmente rechazar a nuestros padres, hijos, cónyuge e

(Continued from page 1) Our gospel reading today— Luke 14: 25-33, is indeed harsh.

“If anyone comes to Me without turning his back on his

father and mother, his wife and his children, his brothers and sisters, indeed his very self, he cannot be My follower.”

What is Jesus trying to teach us? Must we really reject our

parents, children, spouse and even our own self-interest? The

need to place such words in context is an important lesson

for those who advocate a literal understanding of the Bible.

Jesus’ words bring us face to face with the cost of

discipleship and the relative importance of all human

commitments when compared with our commitment to

Jesus. There is no human relationship so intimate and loving

that it is more important than our relationship with Jesus. There is no achievement or worldly honor more significant

than our being a disciple of Jesus. No created reality can take

precedence over the Kingdom. All created reality, all human

relationship is limited and finite. Only our relationship with

    Jesus can provide lasting peace.

Our first reading from the Book of Wisdom, reminds us all

that God’s ways are of eternal value. Worldly philosophy is

limited in its ability to deal with ultimate truths. Only those

who seek God’s will and put it into practice are truly wise. A

life of the mind, without a heart set on the ways of God, will only yield emptiness and disappointment. The wisdom of the

Lord is our gift freely offered to all whose hearts are opened.

The letter to Philemon reminds us that social conventions as

well, must give way to the demands of the Lord. Onesimus is

a slave. He flees from his owner; Philemon took solace in

Paul. Paul sent Onesimus back not as a salve but as a

“beloved brother” who is very special to him. Faith estab-

lishes new relationships which challenges our normal way

of doing things. Philemon must begin a new relationship.

The old pattern and values are of no value. All is new.

Once again, this week, let us reflect on what lights up our

life? What is the ultimate concern in our life? Today’s

readings tells us that only Jesus Christ can be Lord. All else

is false. Idols do not give life. Money does not give us life.

The only people who truly live life in abundance are those

who renounce everything as ultimate concern, save one— Jesus. May it be said all of us.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS? PLEASE PRAYERFULLY CONSIDER
