PUBLISHING INFORMATION
Last month I had the pleasure of attending the Chamber’s Foy Shaw Memorial Scholarship Committee which is Chaired by Mr. Craig Shaw. For some newcomers to our Chamber, the Chamber’s Scholarship Fund is named after Craig’s Father, Mr. Foy Shaw. Mr. Foy Shaw became an “official” member of the Crestview Community in 1956 when he moved to Crestview and established Shaw Moving and Storage, which his son, Craig, owns and operates today. Mr. Foy Shaw was instrumental to the strong foundation of today’s
Crestview Area Chamber of Commerce And, this is what I want to muse about this monthand I am sure there are many, many wonderful and worthy stories that many can share.
I never had the privilege of meeting Craig’s Dad. I wish I had. During the Scholarship Committee meeting, Craig reinterated the reason this scholarship was established in his Dad’s name. He started the story about where his Dad’s career began. Mr. Foy Shaw was a brick mason. As Craig continued the story of his Dad, I became more and more fascinated to hear about a man who reached great heights in his business, family and community---one brick at a time. And, a man who did not have a college education but who had the vision of knowing that Building Strength Today makes for a Stronger Tomorrow.
I kept thinking about Mr. Shaw’s bricks and the stuff that holds them together. What if that mortar hadn’t been perfectly mixed and the bricks slid off? Or, what if the apprecentice mason didn’t use enough mortar in between them to make a steady foundation while more and more bricks were laid? What if? What if?
And, then I started thinking about all our children going back to school—for the first timers going to elementary school or the first time college students. No matter the age, these Students are our Future.
So, if they are the Future, what are we? Are we the bricks? The mor-tar? The bricks and the mortar? For me, I think we are both. And, then I ask myself are we carving out a path of solidly placed bricks with the perfect mortar to build them a sound foundation? I think we do.
But…..you knew it was coming! We must never forget:.1. To act with a clear sense of purpose to building a stronger com-
munity; and,2. To address both the immediate and longer-term needs of our busi-
ness community.
So, let’s pump some iron; flex our muscles and build up our biceps . Get strong. Stay strong. And, together continue Building Strength Today for a Stronger Tomorrow. The only stake is nothing less than the future.
The Crestview Area Chamber of Commerce Foy Shaw Memorial Scholarship is proud to say it continues year after year of paving many strong and solidly laid bricks by awarding scholarships in our area. Congratulations to the 2015 recipients of the Foy Shaw Memorial Scholarship: Molly Kitchen | Crestview High School; Hope Standridge | Laurel Hill; Allison Rainey | Baker High School. We are so proud to have had a chance to contribute to their future and for a Strong Tomorrow for all of us.
P.S. Craig Shaw is also our wonderful Monthly Breakfast EMCEE! Thank you, Craig!

The Health and Wellness Committee of the Crestview Area Chamber of Commerce will be sponsoring a “Community Health Fair” targeting all age groups. The Crestview Community Center is located on 1446 Commerce Drive, next to Bob Sikes Library. This will be the 9th annual event offered by the Crestview Area Chamber.
The goal of the Health Fair and Health and Wellness Committee is to build awareness of the many health related organizations available in Crestview and surrounding areas. We plan to include 80 vendors (on a first come, first serve basis) who can provide a variety of healthcare screenings, services, education, and information. We will be advertising and promoting the event through local television, radio, and newspapers. Local talent will be performing throughout the day. This event is geared toward all age groups.
We would like to invite you to help us meet our goal by participating in the Health Fair. Applications will be available on September 1st on the Crestview Chamber website as well as at the Chamber office. Tables will be furnished and each booth will be approximately 6 or 8 feet in size. The cutoff date is September 30th. Please sign up promptly, as spaces fill up quick!

Life Insurance: Term Life InsuranceProtects Your Loved Ones at Affordable Rates
MEMBER ARTICLE LEGACY INSURANCE
Life Insurance: How Much Life Insurance Is Enough?
You already know life insurance is important to protect the financial future of those you love, such as your spouse and kids. But what life insurance is best?
Term insurance is great for giving the most coverage for the least cost right now. A new family with young children and a need to stretch their budget should consider term insurance. It is surprisingly affordable.
Someone with a mortgage payment or car payment, who does not want to leave that monthly obligation to their loved ones, could consider term insurance to pay these debts off in the event of their death.
What are the downsides of term insurance? It usually provides 10, 20 or 30 years of protection, depending what you buy. What happens when you get to the end of the term insurance policy and you still need life insurance?
Most of us would expect to be less healthy in 10,
20 or 30 years than we are today. Things like weight, cholesterol and high blood pressure all could make you unable to qualify to buy more life insurance then, or it may be so expensive you can’t afford it.
Permanent insurance bought at younger ages often proves to be the best value in the long run. Term insurance can give you lots of protection for the lowest cost now.
If you have loved ones to protect and would like us to get you a no-obligation quote, or you just have questions, just give our agency a call.

The Crestview Area Chamber of Commerce is once again hosting our Annual Triple B festival in Downtown Crestview Florida. The Triple B stands for Blackwater, Bluegrass, and BBQ and is the host to over 150 vendors and competitors. The 2016 Triple B will be organized by our chair Mike Roy, with Bryan Pest Control.
This will be our 12th Annual Triple B event and it is scheduled to be held on March 19, 2016 on our historic Main Street. We will be partnering with the City of Crestview and the Centennial Committee to promote the continued yearlong celebration of our

wandering our 4 block festival, while sampling BBQ from one of our 15 plus competitors, or stopping at The Florida Lottery stage, or the south end stage to listen to one of the many Bands that we have perform that day. All proceeds from the event go back to the Chamber in order to fund this event for our businesses the upcoming year.
We will start preparations in just a few short months for this year’s event. Please be looking for sponsorship opportunities in the near future.

Backpacks, pencils, notebook paper, binders, glue sometimes I think that supply list is a mile long but I love to watch the excitement in Zachary’s eyes as he picks out the perfect Star Wars notebook and the coolest pencils with the funny erasers.
Growing up I loved school. I am a proud graduate (Class 1991)
of Crestview Senior High School. In my family we now have kids scattered all over Okaloosa County schools. My nephew, Mikey is a junior at Crestview High School, my niece Lillie, is 8th grade at Davidson Middle School and my Zachary is 5th grade at Bob Sikes Elementary. All 3 of these children started their
education journey at Bob Sikes Elementary which in my opinion is a fantastic school! Since the first day of kindergarten in 2004 our family business, Air Care A/C and Heating, has adopted their homeroom classroom, sometimes two a year with a monetary donation. This support to the classroom teacher helped with whatever they had to buy out of their pocket for their classroom and they are so THANKFUL and appreciative for this gift.
I applaud the businesses, employees, parents, grandparents etc. who have made it a priority to help with Adopt a Classroom, Sports Donations, Bulldog/Gator/Hobo Discount Cards, Scholarship Donations, Car Wash Spots, Band Uniform Donations, Okaloosa Saves, Book Fairs, PTO fundraisers, Mentor/Reading Programs and the list goes on and on. If you have
donated your money or your time to ANY of the different Okaloosa County schools I personally want to THANK YOU! You made a difference in the life of a student.
There are so many ways that your business can be involved with supporting education of our youth. Get involved….make a difference.

The AHEC (Area Health Education Centers) program was developed by Congress in 1971 to help bring the resources of academic medicine to address local community health needs, particularly in underserved populations. West Florida Area Health Education Center, Inc. (WFAHEC), a 501 C3 organization, was founded in 1993 at Okaloosa Walton Community College in Niceville, Florida by a governing board of directors and representatives from the University of Florida Area Health Education Centers Program at the University of Florida College of Medicine. This original founding group saw the benefits that an AHEC could bring to this area of Northwest Florida. The mission focus of WFAHEC was to improve access to healthcare for medically underserved and rural populations by recruiting, training and retaining healthcare providers. That mission remains the same in 2015 and at least two of the founding board members are still current and very dedicated members of the board. In 1994, WFAHEC relocated to Crestview, FL in Okaloosa County to be more centrally located to the communities it serves and it remains there at the present time.
WFAHEC is one of 10 regional centers in Florida and one of four centers affiliated with the UF AHEC Program. The 10 regional centers are affiliated with five program offices located at state medical schools and they cover all 67 counties in Florida. WFAHEC’s designated service area includes Walton, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa and Escambia counties. Nationally, there are 56 AHEC programs with more than 235 centers that operate in almost every state and the District of Columbia. Approximately 120 medical schools and 600 nursing and allied health schools work collaboratively with AHECs to improve health for underserved and under-represented populations.
To mention just a few of the programs we are involved with: We are legislatively funded through the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement. As part of Tobacco Free Florida’s “Three Ways to Quit”, we offer free tobacco cessation classes, including free nicotine replacement therapy, we provide tobacco training to healthcare professionals and healthcare profession students, and we work on system change for tobacco with healthcare facilities and institutions of higher learning. If anyone is interested in going tobacco
free at your worksite, we are happy to provide onsite classes. We also contract with the Area Agency on Aging to provide the Stanford Program for Chronic Disease Self- Management and Tai Chi for Arthritis and for Better Movement. We subcontract with FSU to coordinate the SSTRIDE program at Davidson and Shoal River Middle Schools and Crestview High School. We have 129 SSTRIDE students participating in the pipeline program for Florida State University College of Medicine. As a matter of fact, SSTRIDE students are present at the Chamber Breakfasts taking blood pressure each month.
For more information on WFAHEC, visit us at our website, www.westfloridaahec.org or call 682-2552.

Founded in 1905, Rotary International is an international service organization whose stated purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. It is a secular organization open to all people regardless of race, color, creed, religion, gender, or political preference. There are 34,282 clubs and over 1.2 million members worldwide. The members of Rotary Clubs are known as Rotarians. Members usually meet weekly for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, which is a social event as well as an opportunity to organize work on their service goals.
The Rotary Club of Crestview is a lunch club, meeting at noon on Wednesdays at Samuel’s Roadhouse (the former Coach N Four). Our club was established in 1987 and currently has 37 members. We enjoyed an extremely successful fundraising year in 2015, raising over $27,000 to help support worthy causes and within the local area and beyond.
Our flagship fundraiser, the Wild Game Feast and Hunt, will celebrate its 23rd year in February 2016. At this ticketed event, we host as many as 500 attendees at what is always a great evening of food and fellowship. Funds from this event have supported Raider Athletics at Northwest Florida State College and over the years we have contributed in excess of $120,000 to the school. If you or your business would be interested in sponsoring and/or attending this year’s event, please contact our Wild Game Feast chairperson, Bill Barnhill, or any member of the club.
The Crestview Club launched a new fundraising effort in 2015 dubbed The Great Gun Giveaway, which was also a great success. One thousand tickets were distributed for a donation of $30 each, giving donors 30 chances to win a variety of rifles and handguns over a 30 day period. We partnered with Precision Tactical Arms Company in Crestview, where all the background checks and transfers were handled, to ensure every winner met the legal requirements for gun ownership. We plan to begin marketing the 2nd Annual Great Gun Giveaway in October, with the giveaway period to begin in February 2016, so get your tickets before they are gone – we only distribute 1,000! Allyson Oury is the chairperson for this effort and every club member will have access to tickets.
What does our Rotary Club do with all the money we raise? Lots of great things! Just within the last twelve months:
• Provided copies of the U.S. Constitution to all north Okaloosa County 7th graders, to coincide with their Constitution study units
• Hand delivered dictionaries to all north Okaloosa County 3rd graders• Supported Dr. Peter’s Operation Medical Care mission to bring a boy from Belize to
the U.S. for medical care• Continued our annual support of NWFSC Raider Athletics• Entertained presentations from five local charities, nominated by the club membership,
and made donations to Baker Area Youth Association, Save Haven Horse Rescue Center, Era Bergan Learning Center, Humanity in Action Fellowship (Kalena Thomhave), and Pilots for Christ
• Continued our annual support of Children in Crisis• Continued our support of the Rotary Foundation, including but not limited to the
Polio Plus Campaign to eradicate Polio from the world
Also, during the past year, with assistance from a Rotary District Grant, our club helped Catholic Charities begin their Caring Coach project. Utilizing our Rotary funding, the Caring Coach makes a stop once a month at a central meeting location in Baker so that underprivileged families, many without adequate transportation to get to the various food banks in Crestview, can have access to free groceries for their families. Each month Rotarians assist in handing out food to 30 or more families in need. An extension of this grant has been approved and we are excited to continue this service project into our 2016 Rotary year.
Another new project we are excited to launch this November is a Music in the Park fundraiser for the Crestview High School band and music programs. Our goal for this first year of the event is to help the Big Red Machine raise the remaining funds needed to order their new uniforms. In what we hope will become an annual event, we envision that

funds from future years will go to help the band maintain instruments and buy new ones, along with providing funding for students who need scholarship assistance to participate in the music programs. The date for this year’s event has been set for Saturday, November 21st at Old Spanish Trail Park. Music will begin around lunchtime and continue into the afternoon. Look for additional details coming soon and be sure to get your tickets from any Rotarian and help support this group of kids who are such an outstanding representation of our community wherever they go!
In all we do, we strive to follow the “Four Way Test” of Rotary. Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? The Rotary Club of Crestview is always looking for new members who are interested in embracing the mission of Rotary International. If you are interested in finding out more about membership in Rotary, contact any Rotarian or email us at [email protected].
This year’s Board of Directors for the Rotary Club of Crestview are Allyson Oury (President), Larry Ward (President Elect), Pat Hollarn (Secretary), Kim Day-Scheid (Treasurer), Bill Barnhill (Director), Samma Brannon (Director), Dick Russell (Director), Mike Carroll (Immediate Past President) and Ronnie Lunsford (Sergeant at Arms).
A big thank you to the owners at Lee Buick GMC, and Rotarian Dale Henderson, for donating your Chamber sponsorship time to our club for the September meeting. We are very appreciative of your continued support of our club.
This space was graciously donated by Lee Buick GMC.

Hello all of our wonderful Chamber friends and neighbors. I hope that everyone is getting settled in with the new school year! Speaking of a new year, PILOT has some exciting things that we are getting involved with here in our local community. As you all know, the Crestview Main Street Association is planning a Crestview Centennial Celebration and we are looking forward to getting in and helping make this event awesome! As the future leaders of tomorrow we are so excited to see the growth and redevelopment of our beautiful and historic downtown. If you are looking for some ways to become involved, we would love to have you at our monthly luncheons. They happen every 3rd Thursday of the month at noon with the locations TBA on our Facebook
page as well as the Chamber of Commerce website. Please join us and bring your thoughts and ideas to the table as we discuss ways in which we can help our community grow while developing lasting business relationships with some of the most amazing folks right here in Crestview!
Hope to see you soon.
