Last weekend, the Strathclair Old Iron Club hosted anold-ashioned threshing demonstration in the feldacross the road rom the ormer Strathclair Auction Mart.Good weather and a good crowd made or a successultwo-day demonstration.

With the use o restored antique arm machinery, some real horse power and a lot o manpower, the bind-ing and threshing demonstrations oered a glimpse into

how arm work was done a hal century and more ago.

For some o the older spectators, the demonstrationbrought back great memories o the hard work, but good

times they, their parents and grandparents experienced

each year during harvest. For younger spectators who are more amiliar with

todays modern machinery and advances in agricultural

technology, the weekend demonstration gave them agreater appreciation and respect or the time consuming, backbreaking work done by their ancestors in order to get

the crop o.Demonstrations such as these are valuable to pre-

serve the heritage o lie on the arm. Hats o to the Old

Iron Club and all others who host demonstrations such

as this to keep the spirit o the old threshing gangs alive!

third-party easibility studyby the end o the year.

    Earlier this year,

Minnedosa own Coun-cil put out a bid or thecompletion o a easibility

study on the MREC proj-ect. Jack Harper and Asso-ciates, a Winnipeg compa-

ny, was recently selected toprepare the report.

    Tey are a very quali-

f ed company and havebeen involved with rec-reation acilities or a

number o years. Harperhas taught at the Univer-sity o Manitoba and been

employed all across thecountry doing studies likethese, explained Mayor

    Ray Orr.Jack Harper and As-

    sociates will be reviewing

all details o the MRECproject including the con-struction, why the acility

is being built the way it is,the business plan, con-struction costs, operating

    plans, operating costs, andprospective business.

    Harper will be basi-

cally looking at all aspectso this project and then willprepare a report or coun-

cil. We are hoping that wewill have that report by theend o this year.

A easibility study on the MREC project has alreadybeen conducted by those currently involved with the

project. However, a review rom an independent sourceis needed in order to satisy requirements or provincialunding.

Orr anticipates that the study will cost in the vicinityo $30,000, hal o which will be unded by the province, the other hal will be coming out o the MREC reserve.

We have given Harper a copy o all o the plans andnext week he will begin a variety o meetings with difer-ent user groups, town people, MREC organizers, con-

struction representatives and engineers, says Orr.Currently the MREC site continues to see some sur-

ace changes as local volunteers have been moving earth

around, leveling the elds to prepare the land or the var-

ious soccer and baseball elds.Tere is a lot o ground work going on but now har-

vest has taken precedence or many o our volunteers.Te municipalities are involved as well but I am not toosure where we will end up at the end o this building sea-

son.Fundraising or the project continues and unds cur-

rently sit at just over $6 million. Te current total does not

include the owns 2013 commitment o $300,000.Fundraising is an ongoing challenge or this project. It is hard to keep everyones mind on it because it is such

a long-term project. Tere are ederal grant programscoming in the spring that we will be working on, thereis the provincial grants coming up or next year, and the

town is applying or a debenture, which we are currentlydoing preliminary work on now, explained Orr.own Council will be sitting down with the MREC

building committee near the end o October to review thebuilding timeline, any changes necessary and where theproject currently sits in terms o progress. Te easibility

report rom Jack Harper and Associates is expected to bepresented to council by the end o this year.

    Dear Editor,

Iwill start this with grate-ul respect to the peoplethat work at the care home.I have never met such a car-

ing group o people in mylie! My mother has been a

resident there or almost seven years. Ater breakingher hip she has been confned to a Broda chair. Be-cause o that, we have needed to use the Handi Vannumerous times or various reasons. Te most recent

was or a serious and necessary surgery. Te HandiVan was in or repair and unavailable, so arrangementswere made to transport her by ambulance to the hos-pital. Both o them were called out. So the only option

was to push her in a wheelchair. Now how nice is thator an 83-year-old woman at 8:30 a.m. and only +6 de-grees?I am thinking... can I do this? alk about adding

stress to an already stressul situation. Te activity di-

rector, Brenda Hales, went above and beyond her job

description and pushedMom up that hill. Tat isno small task. Tanks onceagain Brenda!

Te sta at the hos-pital and the two doctors

did a remarkable job! Tesurgery went well andmother is recovering.

Te Handi Van is an essential service and shouldbe available daily, not just or care home residents butanyone who should need it. Te Handi Van has beenin or repairs since mid August which means many in-conveniences and missed occasions or a lot o olks. Now with the shortage o drivers, when the Handi

Van comes back, service will be l imited. Tat disap-points mysel and others. So now we need people tostep up to the plate. Te more drivers the less time ev-eryone puts in. Ater all, most o us will be seniors oneday.

    Dear Editor,

We were at the Minnedosa Cemetery this pastweek cleaning the gravesites o our loved ones. When we arrived, we noticed that the headstones

had been moved. Tis was not something the windcould do. It takes a minimum o two people to try toput them back in place. We decided to see i any others had been moved.

In the short area that we walked around we ound six

more headstones which had been moved. Our understanding is that the own pays some-

one to mow the grounds, but do they use a ride-onmower or do they use a push mower? It looks to us that a ride-on mower was used and

pushed the headstones out o place. We moved the stones back in place last year and

complained to the own, but obviously nothing wasdone. We also noticed that there are chips taken out o

the headstones which is an indication that they havebeen hit with something quite heavy (eg. ride-onmower).I in act a ride-on mower was used to keep the

grounds tidy, who is responsible or the damagecaused to the stones?

    Raising unds through com-

munity donations, grants, book sales and undrais-ing eforts, they were able

to raise enough money tobring the building back tobeing structurally sound.

Trough donationsand grants we were able togather the money to replace

the roo and the windows.Tat continued and we gotthe building stabilized and

    in a condition o long-term

preservation, at least rom astructural perspective. Te

rest o the building was ac-tually in pretty good shapeconsidering it was 100 years

old, said Pollon.Te work completed by

    the heritage committee in-

cluded a new roo, all win-dows were either repairedor replaced, window rames

were repaired, replaced orrepainted, new acia, thebasement windows were

cemented in to remove anypossibility o moisture en-

tering the building, all o thedoors were reconditioned, and the so t was recondi-tioned and installed.

T e project took atleast $60,000 in buildingsupplies and then another

$40,000 in volunteer la-bour. Te roo alone wasa $30,000 project, added

    Pollon.Although CP Rail had

    come to the community

and announced that thestation would be gited tothe town, the paperwork

    was never completed and

CP Rail continued to ownthe land and the building,

    even during the extensiverenovations.

    Unortunately at that

time no one took the bullby the horns and got the ti-tle transerred and it turned

out to be more o a photo

op or CP Rail more than

anything else.In 2009, CP Rail was

    approached by the heritage

committee about naliz-ing the agreement that hadbeen made. At that time

CP responded saying thatmanagement had changedand that deal was no longer

    viable.CP then proposed a

    lease agreement to the

committee, willing to leasethe building or a periodo 99 years or the sum o

    one dollar per year. Once

the heritage committee re-ceived the lease agreement

on paper, they approachedthe town council about thepossibility o transorming

the heritage building into atourist inormation centre.

    It took them a while

to come around, but nallythey were agreeable to dothat. Te lease document

had three pages o stipula-tions. All kinds o require-ments to do with insurance,

operating costs, permits, construction, re concerns, identication, ber optics,

parking rights, cancella-tion, and even encing,Pollen continues.

Once all o the partiesinvolved were comortable

    with the lease agreement,

the committee returnedto CP prepared to sign theproposed lease.

T e lease proposalwas on the table or abouta year and by the time we

chased down all 24 clauses, and were prepared to signthe agreement, I was told

    that they had changed their

minds and that ofer wasnow of the table and we

were back to square one. With all o the work

that was put into the build-

ing, the committee wasdetermined to make some-thing o this abandoned

    site. Struggling to nail down

    an agreement with CP, the

committee proposed thatCP Rail take the buildingback and resume use.

Te of er was then pre-sented to the Calgary head-quarters and denied. Even

though the rail companywas hesitant to completean agreement with the her-

itage committee and theown o Minnedosa, it didnot want the building back

or its own use either.Ater the lease agree-

    ment was no longer viable,

    CP instructed the com-

mittee to create an oferto purchase or the build-

ing and that they would beable to lease the land.We made a proposal

to them on May 6th, ittranscribes all o the workdone by the committee

and I also enclosed twoarticles about the origi-nal donation. Tey want

$70,000 or the station. Our proposal was that inlieu o the work that was

done and the money thatwe spent repairing theirbuilding we would be in a

position to abide by theiroriginal of er o one dol-lar, back when this whole

discussion began in 2005. Iwas told about three weeksago that we would have a

counter proposal on thetable by the end o Augustbut that hasnt material-

ized yet. We are still await-ing a response.

    Moving Forward

    Recently, the HistoricMonument Commission in

    Ottawa has been in contact

with CP over the Minnedo-sa station. Te Commission

has been inquiring aboutwhat is going on with theheritage building and how

can it be restored and pre-served.

    I was called a ew

weeks back by CP askingme to send photos o the

inside and the exterior othe building to satisy theneeds o this commission,

Pollon continues. Duringthose phone calls noth-ing about the ofer to pur-

chase or the counter oferwas even mentioned. But I

think that this outt in Ot-tawa is putting a little heaton CP, which will hopeullyspeed up this process a lit-

    tle.According to Pollon,

    CP o cials needed pho-

tos o the interior o thebuilding and did not havekeys or even know who

has access to the building.Since 2000, the land andthe building have been let

and the heritage commit-tee has taken the upkeepresponsibility upon them-

    selves.

We have been let tolook ater cutting the grass,

keeping the weeds downand watching the build-ing, all to their benet, and

they cant even commu-nicate with me when theysay they are going to.

    Until the heritage com-

mittee receives a counterofer or responds rom CPthe entire project continues

to sit in neutral, as it hasbeen or the past 13 years.

    I dont really under-

stand why we are now indiscussion to buy, when

they originally were goingto donate the building tous. Te amount o work and

    volunteered time would

not have happened i wehad known that they weregoing to go back on every

ofer they have promised.CP has been and is

    continuing to work with

the towns historical groupon nal arrangements and

    value our good relationship

with local o cials in takingthe necessary steps to en-sure a successul transer,

    said Kevin Hrysak, CP Rail

media relations manager. We are still sitting in

neutral and another build-ing season has come andgone and now nothing will

be done with the buildingor at least another winter, said Pollon.

mance in Minnedosa in2011, Hutton graduatedrom University and hasbeen travelling aroundCanada reelancing as amusician and actor. Hut-ton has been singing inEdmonton, oronto and

Winnipeg in various pro-ductions, and has spentsome time with RainbowStage and Dry Cold Pro-ductions.

    I am part o a ew pro-

essional choirs as well,so that keeps me busythroughout the year, seemslike I always have some-thing on the go whether itbe big or small.

Tis past weekendHutton wrapped up hismost recent perormanceoCloser than Ever, a ColdDry Production at the Forksin Winnipeg. Te produc-tion had a week-long runand fnished up on Sun-day. Prior to that, Hutton

was on the Rainbow Stagein Kildonan Place in Win-

    nipeg perorming in MaryPoppins.

I am just o o a pro-duction o Mary Poppinsand it was just such a hugesuccess. For a little while inthe summer I was thinkingabout potentially lookingor other career optionsbut Mary Poppins made

me realize how much I love

perorming and music andmusical theater. So, I amlooking orward to comingback to Minnedosa withnew ound energy and anew ound excitement.

Ater next weekendHutton may be headedback east to oronto or aew more auditions beorecoming back to Manitobain the New Year. At the be-ginning o March he will beperorming with the Win-nipeg Symphony Orches-tra as the tenor soloist in a

Mozart concert. As soon as that isover I begin rehearsals ora musical with a theatercalled Winnipeg StudioTeater, and I have not

worked with them yet so Iam looking orward to that.Te show calledAvenue Q,it should be interesting, and it is a show with pup-pets. As soon as that is overI am doing a ew concerts

with the Brandon Cham-ber Players in April.

    ON THE FARM

    By ELMER KASKIW

he past growing sea-son has been interest-ing to watch or monitoras it relates to crop growthand maturity based uponGrowing Degree Days. Tedelayed start to planting

this spring resulted in themajority o the provincebeginning to plant at thesame time in and aroundthe second week o May.

Our Growing DegreeDays as a percent o nor-mal in South Parkland ac-tually trended higher ormost o the summer whencompared to the Centralregion o the province yetour crop maturities andharvest were almost two

weeks behind. Te ques-tion then becomes whyand what afect does this

delay have on how wemanage our crops.

Although GrowingDegree Days provide use-ul temperature data ithas become obvious thatit cannot be used in isola-

tion or estimating cropmaturity as there are otheractors that come into playbesides temperature. Temost signicant and mostobvious dif erence is thechange in elevation. Teimpacts o the angle o thesuns rays especially in the

early spring and all meansour soils are much slowerto provide and hold con-sistently a warmer tem-perature in the spring andearly all. Tis was particu-larly evident this spring

when growers o soybeanswould monitor soil tem-peratures as an indicatoro when conditions wereright or planting. Soils thisspring initially warmedup nicely to 10-12 degreesCelsius in the third weeko May which is consid-ered ideal or planting soy-

beans. It then proceededto drop quickly to 6-8 de-grees Celsius in the last

week o May. Tis uctua-tion in temperature doesnot occur to the same de-gree and requency in soils

at lower elevations and incoarse or lighter texturedsoils which are more denseand capable o retainingheat. Tis more consistentsoil temperature allows orbetter root developmentand more rapid growth.Te large number o pot-

holes, sloughs and trees inParkland areas also has amoderating afect on tem-perature again slowing the

warming o soil tempera-tures and growth o crops. So how does this af ectour management o crop-ping systems on Parklandsoils? Production practicesand management o cropinputs that contribute tohigher yields must also be

weighed against their a-ects on growth and cropmaturity. Everything romcrop and variety selection

to higher nitrogen ratesand ungicides to eventhe ability to straight cutat harvest are all afectedto some extent by the de-lay in crop developmentexperienced by our crops.

Production strategiesmust always be examinedas to what afect it will havein getting the crop to ma-ture and harvested whilestill maximizing yield andquality.

    Clubroot confrmed

    in two felds

MAFRI advises, in Au-gust and September, plantsrom two unrelated eldsshowed symptoms o club-root galls on their roots.Further testing has result-ed in a positive clubrootDNA analysis o both plantsamples. Due to these re-sults, the department saysManitoba can no longerbe considered ree o club-root disease. Te discoveryo clubroot symptoms in

Manitoba had been con-sidered likely, as clubrootDNA had been conrmedpreviously in soil samplesunrelated to these elds.

    With awareness o the po-

tential or developmentin Manitoba, growers andindustry members havebeen monitoring canolamore closely or signs othe disease.

MAFRI reminds arm-ers to ollow best man-

agement and disease pre-vention practices as theyprepare or the 2014 crop

    year.Proper equipment

cleaning, specically toreduce the movement osoil on eld equipment, iskey to reducing the risk ospreading this soil-bornedisease. Te use o club-root-resistant crop variet-ies, proper crop rotationand good weed manage-ment o alternate hosts

will help prevent heavierinestations rom develop-

ing within a eld wherea disease may already bepresent at undetected lev-els. Clubroot can causeeconomic yield losses

in host crops includingcanola. T e disease sur-

vives in soil as hardy, rest-ing spores, with a hal-lieo our years, but it has thecapacity to survive up to20 years. Once establishedin a eld, clubroot requireslong-term management

    strategy.
