ANNULMENT/TRIBUNAL

Like many priests I am often asked the questions, “What is an annulment?” “How do you get one?” “What is the tribunal?” These are certainly legitimate questions to be asked not only by those reviewing the Church’s annulment procedure but by all Catholics as well. What follows is an explanation of what an annulment is. I hope it is helpful. Anyone who has been previously married and wishes to marry in the Catholic Church needs to seek the assistance of the Metropolitan Tribunal in order to determine their ability to do so. An annulment is merely a declaration by the Church Tribunal that a marriage was not canonically valid. The Marriage Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Detroit is composed of a staff delegated to act on behalf of the Archbishop in making such a determination. The priests and lay persons connected with the Tribunal are there to help people in applying the Gospel and present Catholic Church Law to one’s present situation. The Catholic Church believes that marriage is sacred and that it affects the family, society, and the Church. Marriage is not something that is totally private. The Church believes that one’s previous marriage, often painful, is sacred as well. The Catholic Church states that “The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of off-spring” (Canon 1055). In Marriage, the couple is considered as a permanent sign of this reality. It is on the basis of this initial commitment that one’s marriage is treated. A Church declaration of nullity has no civil effect: an ecclesiastical declaration of nullity DOES NOT affect the legitimacy of children in civil or in Church law. Such a declaration does not impute guilt to either party. An ecclesiastical declaration of nullity merely gives assurance from the Catholic Church that the information available gives the Church reason to believe that the consent given at the marriage ceremony did not meet the requirements of Catholic Church Law. All persons who desire to marry in the Catholic Church have the right to ask the Metropolitan Tribunal to investigate the possibility of the nullity of their former marriage. If you have any questions, consult myself or Deacon Michael. We are here to help you. Have a wonderful autumn week and please remember to find a place for me in your prayers.

Tonight , Sunday September 22 is our first faith formation gathering. We will begin with dinner in the Social Hall at 6:00 pm, move to the

church at 7:00 to hear Mary Wilkerson talk about “Encountering the Risen Christ” This is for all students 1st - 12th Grade and their parents/guardians, and parishioners.

Hello,

My name is Paul Touillon and I joined St. Thomas More almost 2 years ago. I am 24 years old and work for an automotive supplier based in Rochester Hills. I was confirmed last year through the RCIA program. This was a great opportunity to meet other young adults with the same wish of strengthening their faith and understand how it can affect our daily life. This motivated me to become active within the parish and decided to create a group dedicated to young adults. Within the group, we would approach topics that relate to our generation (society, relationships, work environment…) where people can share their thoughts and points of view. The purpose of this group is to better integrate young adults into the parish by making them feel more welcomed. Our first meeting will be Tuesday, October 1st at 6:30 PM at St. Thomas More (food will be provided). The group is open for ages 18 to 35 years old and we meet once a week for a meal at St. Thomas More or outside. If you would like to join the group, please contact [email protected]. Also, if you know people (within or outside the parish) who would be interested in joining the group, please share this invitation with them. It would be great to have other young adults willing to join the group! Thank you.

Have a blessed day! Paul

This is an opportunity for sixth, seventh and eighth grade faith formation boys and girls to learn more about the vocations of Priesthood and Consecrated Life. The students will hear how others have come to understand their call from God, pray evening prayer with one of our Auxiliary Bishops in the beautiful seminary chapel, enjoy a delicious meal and tour the historic seminary.

Charitable Trust & IRA Distribution Donations

A couple weeks back Diane Claeys (Stewardship Commission Representative) wrote an article regarding charitable giving options. She noted that there are options for giving that can assist with personal income tax situations. Charitable Trusts and Required Minimum IRA Distributions are two vehicles to donate to St. Thomas More Parish that can affect your taxable income. I wanted to know how much the parish had received so far this year from these giving options. As of August 31, 2019, St. Thomas More Parish has received $24,695 from parishioner’s contributions from Charitable Trusts & IRA Distributions. This averages to $3,086 per month. These gifts are included in our monthly offertory report as “Donations received in office”. You may want to look into these giving options with your tax and financial consultants for future donation options.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION New Directory Coming Soon!

The Stewardship Commission in conjunction with Lois Sokolowski, Parish Business Manager, have been working on updating parish member records. Reviewing the data for accuracy and putting into format for printing has taken weeks of computer work. With the review it was found many records are lacking birth and sacrament dates, phone numbers, and email addresses. Many children over 25 years of age will be expected to register on their own and will not be included under their parent’s record. The push to update our records is not only so we can print a new accurate directory, but so our census records are accurate so the data is useful.

Once the data is put into print form, we will encourage each family to update their information on the census record. The goal is to complete as many family records as possible with up to date information.

When all the documentation is completed to expected satisfaction, we will create our new St. Thomas More parish directory and make available to all parishioners. It has been a long time since our last parish directory and people have been asking when we will be issuing an updated version. The long wait is almost over! Look for the next phase.

Senior Luncheon Teaser

St. Thomas More is working on establishing a special senior luncheon program. Plans are to conduct a sometimes educational, most of the time just fun, monthly luncheon to get our seniors together to enjoy fellowship and friendship on a monthly basis. Each month’s luncheon will have its own theme. Hint: get your Halloween costumes ready for October!

Stewardship TIME, TALENT AND TREASURE

Evangelization UNLEASH THE GOSPEL

“Quod Dominus Operam eius Desiderat” by John Hannigan

A priest about to be consecrated bishop asked a priest friend of his for advice on a motto for a coat-of-arms. His friend suggested the passage above: “The Lord has need of his service” (Luke 19:31). Since the new bishop felt deeply that he was indeed called to serve, he chose this passage as particularly appropriate to his vocation. Only later did he recall that the “him” in Luke 19:31 refers to the ass Jesus road into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday! We should treasure friends who keep us humble.

Unleash the Gospel says we all have a calling to be of service to the Lord (even if we do act like asses at times). We are all called to holiness and to love our neighbors. Another vocation we share as members of the Church is to spread the Good News of salvation through Jesus by how we live our lives. This sharing is evangelization. Unleash the Gospel recalls Pope Paul VI’s teaching: “‘Evangelizing is in fact the grace and vocation proper to the Church, her deepest identity. She exists in order to evangelize.’ Evangelizing is therefore a responsibility not only of bishops, priests, and religious, but of every individual Christian” (¶3.1).

Everyone has a particular vocation, a certain way to live the Gospel and evangelize. Our challenge, at any age, can be to figure out what God is calling us to. Pope Benedict XVI taught that God has given each of us a “personal vocation … for our own joy and sanctity.” A vocation is not a burden; it is a fulfillment of God’s plan for us, a plan initiated at our Baptism and that lays out a joy-filled path for us.

Some are called to married life; others to ordination as priests or deacons; others to consecrated lives as religious or as single persons. Many are called to serve as catechists and ministers in parishes. Everyone is called in some way but many do not respond. They may not have listened carefully for the call or considered thoughtfully how to serve. There are ways to help us discern our vocation and they all begin with humility and prayer.

• Pray for guidance from the Holy Spirit • Pray for courage • Attend to the gifts and talents you have from God • Be patient; seek advice from the wise • Listen to your mind, and heart, and gut • Spend time before the Blessed Sacrament • Look to Jesus who humbly prayed, “Father, Thy will be

done…”
