Please mark your
calendars for
Oct. 26th.
Student Drop Off and Pick Up
Please drive slowly near the school.
Please do not park in front of driveways
or on crosswalks.
Please drop children off on sidewalks or at the end of the drop off loop.
Please do not park in the drop off loop.
Electronic Devices Students should not bring electronic devices or other valuables to school unless their classroom teacher makes a request.
Broken, lost or stolen items can be very upsetting to children and the school cannot be responsible for such items.
Attendance Please make every effort to ensure that your child arrives at school on time - classes start at 8:45. If your child is going to be late or absent, please let us know by phoning the Attendance Line at 250-923-4248 and leaving us a message.
Pro-D Day
Please note that Sept.
29th is a Professional
Development Day.
(No school for
students.)
LICE
Outbreaks of head lice are common throughout the school year. Although head lice are a nuisance, head lice are not a health risk. You can help by checking your child’s head with the wet-combing method of detection once a week throughout the school year. We will continue to remind everyone to keep their hair back and not to share hats or scarves.
Thank you.
Please make sure that your children dress for the weather - Getting outside for fresh
air and exercise at recesses is very important, even if it is rainy.
PAC
Meeting
Come and join us for
our first PAC meet-
ing of the year on
Tues, Sept. 19th
at 6:00 in the Library.
Child care will be provided.
Student Verification Forms
Your child should have brought home several forms including a “Student Release after an Emergency” letter and a “Student
Verification Form”. These are very important forms that we use to make sure that our information about each student is up to
date. Please check the information carefully, including phone numbers, email addresses, health information and emergency
contacts. We would like to get this updated information back to the office as soon as possible please.
Attached to these will also be the Student FOIPPA/Personal Information Consent Form. Giving consent on this form will allow
us to include your child’s name and/or image on our school website or newsletters. We will not be using their image or name on
our Facebook pages.
Please watch for
October Hot Lunch
order forms coming
home soon.
Library News
Hello everyone!
I am pleased to report that I will be here four days of the week this year: all day on Mon-
days, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, and in the mornings only on Fridays. Students are wel-
come to come to the library to look at books or exchange their books any of these morn-
ings.
Something new I have created this year is a library Facebook page, @Sandowne Elemen-
tary Library. Here is where I will post about new books arriving at the library, and link to
articles about reading and lists of great books. I am the only one who can post on that site,
but everyone can comment.
Please stop by and see me if you are looking for a recommendation of what to read next.
Sincerely, Marni McMahan
PS If your child took out books over the summer they can return them any time now.

Important Information Regarding Students with
Medical Conditions or Who Require Medication at School
Should your child have a life-threatening illness/allergy or require medication while at school
(including antibiotics), please be sure to inform the school office right away.
Parents/guardians of students with anaphylaxis, medical alert conditions and/or who require
medication during school hours (this includes antibiotics) must complete either an Anaphylaxis form,
Medical Action/Alert Planning form and/or a Request for Medication Administration at School form at
the beginning of each school year and at any time the child’s condition or medication needs change.
These forms are available from the school office. Please note: your child’s doctor may be required to
complete a section of these forms.
If your child requires medication, parents/guardians must ensure that the prescribed medication(s)
are available at the school in its original labeled container with the appropriate measuring spoon (if
required) and that the medication is replaced when it is outdated or expired.
Please let the school office know as soon as possible should your child’s medical condition or
medication requirements change.
What to Do If You Have a Concern during the School Year
Your child’s education is extremely important. Should you find yourself concerned about something at
school, whether it is related to your child’s instruction, health, safety, or discipline, we want to know
and help resolve the concern.
First, please speak with your child’s teacher. We often find that solutions can be found at this level
with some open communication. If speaking with the teacher does not alleviate your concern, please
speak with the school principal or vice-principal.
If after thoroughly discussing your concern with school staff, you still feel your concern is unresolved,
contact the assistant superintendent’s office at (250) 830.2325 during business hours until 1 p.m. or
(250) 830.2398 if calling after 1 p.m.
We are partners in your child’s education and we want to work collaboratively with families to ensure
that all our students have the best possible school experience.
Orange Shirt Day We are encouraging student to wear Orange on Sept. 28th in recognition of Orange Shirt Day.
Orange Shirt Day “is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration
event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in the spring of 2013. It grew out of Phyllis' story of having
her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become
an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually. The
date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to
residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and antibullying
policies for the coming school year.
September Asthma Surge Facts and Tips
According to the Asthma Canada, September is Asthma Peak Month. The back-to-school period brings a dramatic increase in
hospitalizations for children with asthma, peaking about the third week in September. Kids are back in close contact with each
other and share germs, like the common cold, that can trigger asthma in young children. Here are some tips to help reduce the
asthma flare-up.
Did you know?
Asthma affects roughly 20 percent of children under 9 years old.
Colds cause up to 85 percent of asthma triggers in young children.
School-aged kids have eight colds a year per average.
On average, the asthma–related hospitalization rate for school-aged children peaks 17.7 days after Labour Day.
More than 20,000 children are hospitalized for asthma across Canada each year.
Prepare for the September surge:
If your child has asthma, develop a written asthma action plan with your family doctor and be sure the school has a copy.
Make sure medications are up-to-date and prescriptions are filled before the peak arrives.
Get your child back into the routine of using his/her inhaled asthma controller medication.
Reduce cold transmissions by teaching your child good hand washing habits, be sure he/she gets enough rest and eats a
balanced diet.
Schedule regular asthma check-ups with your healthcare practitioner to ensure your child’s asthma is properly
controlled.
