Happy New Year Parents and Guardians,
We hope you had an enjoyable holiday with family and friends. 2014 at École des Deux Mondes is shap-
ing up to be full of learning fun & challenges. Beginning January 15th all EDM students are invited to take
the 60 MINUTE KIDS’ CLUB CHALLENGE. What is this 60 minutes a day challenge? We will be joining
with children from all across Canada and working together to keep track of our daily activity, nutrition,
screen time, hydration & sleep.
KEEP UP YOUR HEALTHY HABITS AND REMEMBER 5-2-1-0
*Have 5 or more fruits and veggies
*Spend 2 hours or less in front of a screen
*Be active for at least 1 hour every day
*Drink 0 sugary drinks
At our kick-off assembly January 10 students will learn about 60 MKC, learn how to register, take the
60MKC pledge and take up the challenge!
CARNAVAL, MARDI GRAS, CARNAVAL À DEUX MONDES C’EST TOUT UN FESTIVAL!
We have planned a terrific Carnaval week January 27-31to celebrate this cultural event. Our kick-off as-
sembly with a special appearance by Bonhomme Carnaval begins at 1:45 Mon. Jan. 27. Come &
watch the “EDM Royal Family” receive their crowns & capes. Any child who hasn’t been a king, queen,
duke or duchess can enter his/her name in their classroom draw.
Another favorite EDM Carnaval activity is ice castle building. Once again this year we are asking you to
start freezing plastic containers (cups, yogurt, ice cream pails, balloons etc) at home. At home on Tues-
day January 28 please remove ice from the plastic, place it in a cardboard box or cooler & bring it to
school. Your child can drop his/her ice in the courtyard by the cone with the teacher’s name. If you’d like
to colour your ice please use Kool-Aid not food dye as it stains the concrete. We’ll start building at 9:00.
Daily Carnaval Bingo, activities in the gym, art & skating will round out the week. We are in the process of
booking the rink & will let you know when it has been finalized. Kindergarten children & those new to the
school will receive a red sash. The sash symbolizes a ceinture fléchée/ woven belt that is special to
French Canadian & Métis culture. Instructions on how to decorate it to follow.
Kindergarten Registrations
will be accepted in February — Watch
the newspapers for Registration Dates! Pass
the word on to anyone you know who has a
child turning five this year.

RED CROSS PHILLIPINE RELIEF
We are very proud to announce that the
families From Ecole des deux mondes
have raised $442.64 for the Philippines
relief fund. Way to go EDM! Thank you
so much for your support.
Importance of Being on Time
How does being late just 5 minutes per day affect your child's learning time? These are
the facts: 5 minutes a day = 25 minutes a week
100 minutes a month = 1,000 minutes per school year
3.5 days of missed instruction & learning time per year!
Missed learning time means less opportunity for children to succeed with their learning.
At Discovery Passage, we know there are times when lateness is impossible to avoid. Es-
tablish-ing daily family routines with your children will help you to work together to
ensure that your child arrives to school on time each and every day! Helping your child
develop the habit of being on time is a life time skill which will benefit them now and in
their work fu-ture as well. Please call the school at 250 286-0511 if your child will be
late or away for the day. Thank you for your support!
Congratulations to Owen Phillipow,
who was recognized at our Decem-
ber assembly for being socially re-
sponsible. Owen noticed that his
friend had been hurt, gave him a
hug and comforted him.
Congratulations also to Axel
Bakken, who found an item of val-
ue on the school grounds. Axel
turned the item in and it was re-
united with it’s rightful owner. Way
to go Axel.
Field Trips
In the next few months there are lots of fun ad-
ventures in store for students.
Please remember the importance of permission
slips:
“No slip, no trip!”
Check with your child’s teacher as to whether or
not they need parent helpers — if you are willing
to help the kids with tying shoes and/or skates,
and pitching in — we’d love to have you aboard.
EDM Student Drop-off
101
Your kids are precious to us,
too.
Do not stop your car on the crosswalk!
Do not ‘double-park’ or ‘pass-on-the-
inside’
Use EXTREME caution when sending
little ones across the busy roadway—
better to walk them into the school
CURLING Our grade 4/5 classes will be doing
three curling sessions, January 13, 20 &
27th. We are very fortunate to have Mr.
Don Pennell coming in to give us some
Instruction in curling on

BOWL FOR BREATH 2014
Help support the fight against Cystic Fibrosis . . .
! The 26th Annual Bowl for Breath will take place on Saturday, February 1st
and Sunday, February 2nd at the Campbell River Bowling Centre! The event
helps
to raise funds and promote the awareness of cystic fibrosis. There have been
tremendous developments to improve the quality of life for people with cystic
fibrosis! Unfortunately, a cure for this devastating, inherited disease still has not
been found.
! Cystic fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian
children and young adults. Cystic fibrosis causes a build-up of thick mucus in the
lungs leading to severe respiratory problems. Meanwhile, mucus and protein buildup
in the digestive tract results in extreme difficulty in digesting and absorbing
adequate nutrients from food.
! The effects of cystic fibrosis are most devastating in the lungs. Ultimately,
most CF deaths are due to lung disease. It is estimated that one in every 3,600
children born in Canada has cystic fibrosis. Approximately 3,800 Canadian
children, adolescents, and adults with cystic fibrosis attend specialized CF clinics.
! In 1989,when the first Bowl for Breath was held, cystic fibrosis was
considered a “child’s disease” as a person with CF was fortunate to live to finish
high school. Thanks to significant improvements in treatment and scientific
understanding, individuals are now living long enough to complete university, have
a challenging career, get married and raise a family.
! Elementary, middle school and secondary students can participate in the
Bowl for Breath. There are several shifts to choose from and each participant
bowls two games.
! Students can register at participating schools by contacting the school
coordinator or checking in the school office for a registration form. Registration
forms need to be returned to the school by Friday, January 24 (earlier to make sure
you get your preferred bowling time) or call Cindy Stewart at 923-3382 after that

WINNING AT PARENTING SESSIONS
Understanding the
Physical Activity Recommendations
Bodies are designed to move and children and youth need to be moving more. According
to the Public Health Agency of Canada, children and youth should do at least 60 minutes
each day of moderate to vigorous activity.
Types of activity: aerobic and strength
Physical activity should include vigorous intensity activity at least 3 days each week and
strengthening activities 3 days a week.
Vigorous activity is when the heart rate is increased and one cannot speak more than a few
words at a time without taking a breath. These would include activities like running, bas-
ketball, soccer and cross-country skiing.
Strengthening activities are for muscle and bone strength. Children can build muscle by
climbing and swinging on playground equipment. Youth can do push-ups and curl-ups to
build their muscle strength. Bones need to be strengthened through activities like run-
ning and jumping rope where the muscles push against the bones to make them stronger.
Adults need at least 2.5 hours of physical activity each week for health benefits and should
focus on moderate to vigorous intensity activities. Parents who are active tend to have
children who enjoy being active. If you and your family are not meeting these guidelines,
begin slowly and gradually increase the amount of time you spend being active as you be-
come accustomed to it. Ideally, find a fun activity that the whole family can do together.
