Empire State Bulletin Official Publication of the New York State Council
Knights of Columbus Organized February 3, 1896
A Message From Your State Deputy, Robert D. Weitzman To my Brother Knights and their Families,
Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism - these words are the foundation of our order. They say so much about who we are.
We, as Knights, have made these words come alive in our actions. We are committed to do CHARITABLE acts for all in need. We are
UNITED in our faith as Catholics to live our lives as disciples of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as written in the Gospel. Because
we are FRATERNAL in our beliefs and works, we improve the quality of life for mankind and due to our PATRIOTISM, we pledge
allegiance to the Republic of the United States of America, ONE NATION UNDER GOD. We take on these responsibilities without
hesitation.
The first two months of this Columbian year have been very busy for my brother Knights of New York State. We had our
Pilgrimages to The Shrine of Saint Anne at the Isle LaMotte and The Basilica of the National Shrine Our Lady of Fatima in Lewistown.
We also held a fundraiser for The New York Archdiocese Inner City Scholarship Fund at Yankee Stadium. There were almost 800
Knights and their families present to support this wonderful cause and enjoy a Yankee win!
Our New York State delegation was present at the 133rd Supreme Convention to listen to our Supreme Knight Carl Anderson
and our Spiritual Leaders speak about our Order and the good, or should I say GREAT, works we do. Present at the convention were our
Spiritual Leaders, our Cardinals, Bishops, Priests and of course our brother Knights and their wives. We had representatives from all 50
states, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Canada, Panama, Mexico, Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Bahamas, Virgin Island, the Philippines
and other countries throughout the world. The message we received was inspirational and inspiring! We have been asked by our
Supreme Knight to celebrate the family and to bring the joy of the gospel into our homes. For more information on the 133rd Supreme
Convention please visit www.KofC.org.
I would like to thank my brother Knights from the Nassau, Suffolk, Queens, Western, Finger Lakes, and Westchester / Putnam
Conferences for their hospitality to our Training Team and myself. The New York State Training Team includes our Training Director
Sal Restivo, (PSD), our C&B Director Tony Ippolitto, the Warden to the State Deputy Tom Boslet, and from Supreme, our MPC
Eric Johnson (PSD - Pennsylvania) and MPC Tom Ciborski ( PSD - New Jersey). Your presence at these training seminars and your
commitment to our order is very inspiring to all of us. The team looks forward to visiting the rest of our Conferences to prepare the
officers of today and the future to assume their responsibility of leadership.
We must continue to be committed to our Church. We must continue to be committed to our
community. We must be committed to the growth of our Order. We must be committed to the vision of
Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney and we must be committed to the principles of our order - Charity,
Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. We all play an intricate role in determining the future of our civilization
for future generations.
As we move forward in this Columbian year, we are getting ready for our C&B Early Bird
Drawing which is being held on Sunday, September 27, 2015 at Our Lady of the Rosary in Deer Park. We
are looking for big numbers so be sure to get your books in!
Again, I tell you that we are the most important lay Catholic fraternity in the world and we will
continue to build our Order so we can secure a future for our children filled with Faith, Love and Hope.
Yes, our yoke is heavy but our faith is strong and we will continue to move forward to build a
better world one Knight, one Council at a time.
God Bless You and Your Families
Vivat Jesu!
Sincerely, Bob Weitzman, State Deputy

Prayer for the Canonization of Father Michael J. McGivney God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest,
Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the
generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son,
Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the
Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may
continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your servant Father Michael
J. McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now
present (make your request here). Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father.

A Message from our Senior Associate State Chaplain,
Fr. Brian McWeeney... My Brothers and Sisters in Columbianism,
At this writing we are awaiting the visit of the Holy Father to our shores. While I have no
inside track as to what topics he will cover in his presentations, I am sure he will preach about the
same areas of concern that he has previously addressed. He will call on us to encounter Christ and
witness to him in our care for creation, especially its most vulnerable elements. He will include in
that theme the necessity of recognizing the dignity of human life, whether in the womb or in those
we see among us who are sick, poor, and homeless. Mindful of the World Meetings of Families, he
will challenge all of us to exemplify and support the Sacrament of Marriage, especially when it is
challenged either by societal pressures or personal crises. As Knights, we will be especially attentive
to his words about immigration, mindful that our Order was founded, in part, in response to Father
McGivney's concern for all who were coming to America and not welcomed by nativists. Some
whom we find among us even today.
I must admit to some concern as to how the Holy Father Has been perceived by some
activists, even Catholic ones, and unfortunately, even some self-identified Knights. Our Holy Father
is our shepherd who our Supreme Knight has stated, unequivocally, is all that we can hope for and is
truly a blessing for our Church. He is not a politician of the right or left. He is not a spokesperson for
any particular special interest. He is Catholic in all his
pronouncements. He is our teacher of the Church's wisdom.
He is the Vicar of Christ giving comfort to all who await the
Lord's return. He is our priest praying for us, strengthening us,
and calling us to holiness.
Viva il Papa! Vivat Jesus!
Fr. Brian
Senior Associate State Chaplain

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR PEACE
September 11th
God of peace, bring your peace to our violent world:
peace in the hearts of all men and women
and peace among the nations of the earth.
Turn to your way of love
those whose hearts and minds
are consumed with hatred.
God of understanding,
overwhelmed by the magnitude of this tragedy,
we seek your light and guidance
as we confront such terrible events.
Grant that those whose lives were spared
may live so that the lives lost …
may not have been lost in vain.
Comfort and console us,
strengthen us in hope,
and give us the wisdom and courage
to work tirelessly for a world
where true peace and love reign
among nations and in the hearts of all. -Pope Benedict XVI
Prayer Service at Ground Zero April 20, 2008
At its 122nd annual meeting in 2004, the Supreme Council
resolved that September 11th be observed each year as a
World Day of Prayer for Peace.

Our Nassau Squires are
Recognized for Their
Great Works
On Friday, July 31, 2015, the Squires of Nassau County were recognized by the
Nassau County Executive for all of the charitable work they do. Five of the eight
Circles were able to attend, along with 3 of the NYS Squire Officers. The NY State
Officers and each Circle received a certificate, along with a medal recognizing their
service. The ceremony took place at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theater, located at
Eisenhower Park just prior to a performance of West Side Story. It was a great
opportunity for the Squires and Knights of Columbus to be publicly recognized
in front of several thousand residents from Nassau County.

ROUND TABLES - CREATING AND REPORTING Council Round Tables is an outreach effort for councils that cover several churches. The
intent is to encourage and promote open lines of communication between the council and
the Clergy and parishioners.
During Supreme Knight Carl Anderson’s first address to the state deputies, he stated that
“we have nothing less than a moral obligation to offer every eligible Catholic man the
opportunity and the privilege of membership in our Order.” He also stated, “We must
have a Knights of Columbus presence in every parish.” Therefore, councils which cover
more than one parish are urged to implement the Parish Round Table program in each of
the parishes they service.
Each council that covers more than one church should assign one brother Knight as a
liaison to work with each church they are associated with. If the church your council
is associated with has an ethnic Mass, please make certain to have your liaison include
that population in their communication.
Parish Round Tables allow our councils the opportunity to have an open dialogue with
the Pastor and/or Priests in their churches they are connected with allowing them to learn
the needs of that parish, and parishioners.
Listed below are some parameters for all Parish Round Tables to follow:
1) If a council is covering three churches, two of the churches should have a round table
and the form 2629 should be submitted.
2) If a council is covering one church and it has an ethnic Mass, (example: a Mass in
Spanish) there should be a form 2629 submitted for the ethnic Mass.
3) If a council is covering one church and it has a Mass in Spanish, a Mass in Italian and
a Mass in English it should have 2 round tables.
4) The Grand Knight should also be informed that if a form 2629 was submitted the last
Columbian year, it needs to be submitted again this Columbian year.
Round Tables will give us an opportunity to help our Priests as well as our Catholic
brothers and sisters. Please make every effort to establish round tables where needed and
make certain to submit the form 2629. Please visit www.kofc.org and type “form 2629”
in the search engine to find this form. A page will open where you can click on "report
of round table coordinator" which you will be allowed to print, complete and mail as
directed. Thank you for your support. Vivat Jesu!

“It’s all about the members!” by Sal Restivo, PSD, Membership Director
While traveling around the state it is great to see enthusiastic brothers ready and
willing to go for the STARS. Our Worthy State Deputy Bob has been traveling with
the training team bringing his message of “We are all the New York State Council”
and “We are about charity!”. Bob’s message has been well received and we are on
our way!
To date, we have trained 405 brothers in 8 minor conferences and are preparing
to travel to Syracuse as I write this article. Brother Tom Cibroski, PSD New Jersey,
Fraternal Trainer, joins the team when MPC Erick Johnson, PSD Pennsylvania, cannot
be with us. Brothers Tom and Eric present the Fraternal Planner and give instructions
on its use. The SP-7 is also introduced as a planning tool for council officers.
Organizing and planning are the initial elements used by successful leaders to
accomplish their goals. Our council leaders are focusing upon organizing for success,
using goals and action plans to facilitate their vision to better secure the future of their
councils. As our Worthy State Deputy says “We are all in this together”! Building a
team is essential to building an active council.
New York State is focused on the recruitment of new members and reactivating
members. As of this writing, there are only 33 days left to accomplish the FIRST
QUARTER MEMBERSHIP RECRUITMENT INCENTIVE. When your council
brings in 5 new or reactivated members before October 1, 2015, the council will
receive a 10% discount on its state per-capita. I know you can do this! Let’s make
September a BIG recruitment month!
We are stronger when our councils are ACTIVE and CHARITABLE. Our best
resource is our members; make your councils all about your members! Give them a
practical outlet to express their faith by uniting in charity and fraternity. Keep their
faith alive by keeping the Order alive in New York! Tempus fugit!
Reminder: Please be sure to send your NY state council copies of ALL forms to
[email protected] or mail to: NYS K of C Forms, 109 Caroline
Avenue, Solvay, New York 13209. Send the forms to ONE place and our man Jim
Smith will do the rest!
