September 2015 “THE NATION’S OLDEST WRESTLING PROGRAM” EST . 1903 From the Coach’s Desk As I begin my fifth season as the Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling here at Columbia University I would like to first take a moment and thank all the alumni, parents, family, friends and fans that have continued to support our program. We are all excited to get the competitive year start- ed and look forward to many great performances leading up to the NCAA Championships in March. As many of you are aware the 2016 NCAA Wrestling Championships will be held at Madison Square Garden for the first time in history. I am sure all of you are as excited as the staff and the athletes are to have the opportunity to compete at home in the greatest city in the world. We look forward to seeing you all throughout the season and especially at home in March!!

From the Coach’s Desk

As I begin my fifth season as the Andrew F. Barth Head

Coach of Wrestling here at Columbia University I would like

to first take a moment and thank all the alumni, parents,

family, friends and fans that have continued to support our

program. We are all excited to get the competitive year start-

ed and look forward to many great performances leading up

to the NCAA Championships in March.

As many of you are aware the 2016 NCAA Wrestling

Championships will be held at Madison Square Garden for

the first time in history. I am sure all of you are as excited as

the staff and the athletes are to have the opportunity to

compete at home in the greatest city in the world. We look

forward to seeing you all throughout the season and

especially at home in March!!

Dear Alumni, Friends and Family of Columbia Wrestling:

We hope this letter finds all of you well and excited for

the start of the upcoming season. As we all know, the

best part of the end of summer is the beginning of

wrestling season!

In this month’s newsletter coach we will talk about our

notable upcoming events, introduce to you some of the

newest additions to the Lion’s roster including staff

changes from last year and we will discuss the 3 Lion’s

who will start the season ranked in the top 20 of their

respective weight classes.

First off we invite all of you to come join us in

celebrating Columbia’s homecoming October 16-18,

Friday the 16th we are offering you all a chance to see one

of the most impressive aspects of this sport, the training.

We hope many of you can make it, as it will undoubtedly

give you a truer understanding for the world of college

wrestling. After the Friday evening practice you can

head to the south side of Central Park for our fan social

at the New York Athletic Club. Then, Saturday come join

us for a our homecoming football game as the Lions take

on the University of Pennsylvania Quakers at 3:30.

3 Lions Start the Season Nationally Ranked in the Top 20

by Win Magazine!

Ranked #8 in the Nation at

157lbs, Markus Scheidel!

Markus is returning this season after

winning two matches at the NCAA

tournament last March.

Ranked #18 in the Nations at

165lbs, Tyler White!

Tyler is a returning sophomore

who posted a 24 wins last season.

Look for Tyler to make some noise

at 165lbs this season!

Ranked #18 in the Nation at

285lbs, Garrett Ryan!

Last year, as a freshmen, Garrett

reached Ivy League Rookie of the

Year honors!

The New Guys

Columbia Wrestling welcomes ten new

athletes and one new coach to the roster this

season. Our large freshmen class is in the mid-

dle of an exciting, new experience as they tran-

sition from high school seniors into college

freshmen. You will get to know each freshman

more completely through this monthly news-

letter, as we will pick a few each month to

highlight.

In this month’s newsletter we will introduce to

you freshman Manny Lair, Sam Ward and our

new addition to the coaching staff Joe Nord.

Manny Lair- comes to us from a historically

tough high wrestling program out of Poway

High School. Manny is two time state place

winner in the competitive state of

California. The son of Wade and Leticia Lair,

Manny plans to begin premed classes and

eventually go onto medical school.

Sam Ward- the son of Brian and Anne

Marie Ward comes to us from Locust Valley

High School in Long Island. Sam placed in the

New York State Championships three times,

boasting a runner-up finish his senior season,

earning third place his junior year and a fifth

place finish his sophomore season.

Additionally Sam performed well Claimed

seventh place at the NHSCA Senior Nationals

in 2015 and eighth place at the NHSCA Junior

Nationals the year before. Sam plans on study-

ing economics at Columbia College.

Joe Nord will become our new volunteer

assistant coach as coach Steve Santos has been

moved up to the second assistant position. Joe

comes to us after spending two years on staff at

the University of Minnesota. He is a native of

Minnesota and wrestled for the Minnesota Go-

phers at 197 & HWT from 2006-2011.
