The Vicar Writes……September 2014
ear FriendsOn our recent holiday Mary and I visited Le Mont Saint Michel an amazing feat of engineering. The Abbey is crowned by a gold leafed statue of St Michael slaying the dragon. I was looking forward to the nuns and monks singing the office but they were on holiday!
At the end of September we celebrate the somewhat neglected feast of Saint Michael the Archangel and all angels. So I'd like to invite you to reflect on the phenomenon of angels.
The word "angel" comes from the Greek for "messenger". Angels are seen as messengers from God. Because it has long been held that no one can survive direct contact with God's holiness, angels have come to be known as intermediary spirits which make contact between God and human beings possible. Though without form themselves, they are portrayed in art and poetry as luminous creatures whose wings symbolise that they are not restricted by time and space, with swords to symbolise their power, and with dazzling garments which represent their power to enlighten us. Such imagery is also present in the gospel narrative of the Transfiguration of our Lord, in which Jesus, accompanied by the twin lights of Law and Prophecy, Moses and Elijah, shines as the fulfilment of both. There are, of course, variations on this imagery. In Genesis 28 we read of Jacob's dream which is of a ladder joining earth to heaven, with angels ascending and descending on it. The angels prepare the way for God to appear beside Jacob and to make with him a covenant of a promised land, and of innumerable descendants through whom God will bless all the peoples of the earth.
Revelation 12 speaks of "war in heaven" between God on the one hand and Satan on the other, each with legions of angels. This passage reflects the growth of dualistic thinking and the influence of Babylonian and Greek mythology. In the Book of Job Satan was seen as one of God's agents and messengers whose function, in that classic work, was to test Job's faithfulness in the face of undeserved suffering. By the time we get to John's gospel and the Book of Revelation (also attributed to John) we are well past the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70. Two elements of Judaism survived this tragedy, but only by adapting to life without the Temple. The Pharisees led the movement into what we now know as Rabbinic Judaism, while the followers of Jesus moved
Parish of Killay September 20144
increasingly into the Gentile world and (tragically) into a split from the Jewish community which laid the foundation for centuries of Christian persecution of Jews. In the writings attributed to John this split is clearly reflected, along with the depiction of Satan as God's rival -‐-‐ to a point where there is a decisive showdown prefiguring the Battle of Armageddon, the end of the world, and the Last Judgment. This apocalyptic vision fuels much of the contemporary rhetoric of U.S. administrations and the Islamist fundamentalists. Each uses the same kind of language to justify their common desire for the destruction of the other.
On a more individualistic note, there has been a revival of interest in personal, or guardian angels. Souvenir shops are replete with angel figures, while TV shows such as "Touched By An Angel" appeal to many who have no religious affiliation but seek some kind of spiritual protection.
An Abbey such as at Le Mont Saint Michel, which dedicated to the protection of St. Michael and All Angels, may be expected to have some kind of message for those engaged in their own spiritual struggles. Perhaps it can remind and encourage us as we discover how universally human it is to seek a final reconciliation and integration of our own light and dark sides. In the current climate of controversy within both church and society it may also stand as a reminder that, as people of faith, we need not be afraid, but can trust that the forces of darkness will not overcome us, and we are free to love, trust and build community.
As we celebrate the feast of St. Michael and All Angels, we can give thanks for those invisible and intangible aspects of our faith which can be so important, yet which are all too often neglected. And we can pray that the angels which guide and protect us may lead us into deeper faith, abiding hope, and all-‐embracing love.
Finally, we may wish to note that, in the world of theatre, "angels" are those who invest in shows by providing financial backing. Within the Christian enterprise we are all called to be angels -‐-‐ supporting the work of the whole church with our time, our talents, and our material resources. For the whole ministry of angels of all kinds and in all dimensions, thanks be to God!
Yours in Christ

Parish NewsWe pray for all who are ill -‐ at home, in hospital or Nursing Homes. Phyllis Harries, Emlyn Bawden, Joan Davies, Olwen & John Iles, Joan Dobbs, Glenda Pelzer, Brian Smale, Bill Ivey, Gwynneth & Tommy Bartley, Pam Ward, Mary Minchella, Joan Perry & Marion Horsey’s husband, Colin. We also remember, with gratitude, those who are lovingly caring for them.Gwynneth & Tommy send their sincere thanks to Fr Tim and church family for the prayers and messages of support received during a very difficult few weeks.
✟ We were sad to learn of the death , aged 92 years, of Beatty Loosmore -‐ fondly remembered by those of us who attend Thursday morning Eucharist. Beatty and her late husband, Graham, spent many happy years living in Ashgrove; recently, owing to failing health, Beatty resided at Ashgrove Nursing Home, Waunarlwydd. She and Graham had 3 sons, Lyndon, Ken & Kim. Beatty was proud of all her family and especially the young ones. We all remember Beatty working alongside Graham in their family business (electrical shop in Uplands) but the hard work of the business did not prevent them from enjoying travelling, sailing and vintage car rallies. Beatty was a faithful and loyal member of the Mothers’ Union and of St Hilary’s Church. She will be sadly missed by us all and we send our sympathy to her sons, daughters-‐in-‐law, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
✟
Thank you to everyone who supported the Gwalia Singers Concert. As always, the repertoire (both in English and Welsh) was a joy to listen to. Thank you Nick, Rhian and the choir; also our appreciation of the guest performer Jonathan Lycett and John Davies who accompanied him. After all expenses were paid, a cheque for £330 was handed to the church Treasurer.
✟
Thanks to Geraldine Rees, Janet Lewis, Sheila Betts & Liz Restall who managed the Table Top Sale in Killay Precinct on August 23rd. A total of £150 was raised for church funds.
✟
Congratulations to Sally & Ben on the safe arrival of baby William, a brother for Tristan.

A sprouting warThe other day, as I was walking along the pavement, an acquaintance of mine stopped me and said that I looked deep in thought and was obviously pondering on some problem or other. Well yes I admit I was, at that time, most thoughtful and was thinking of this year’s contest between me and the insect world. Let me explain. Some years ago, over ten but not more than fifteen, I was given some purple sprouting broccoli plants to try in my garden. They were an amazing success and I became a fan of that early spring vegetable. From that year onwards I have tried to see that, come the end of February, the purple sprouting was ready for the dinner table. Some years I have won, some partially so and some have been complete failures.“Why is that?” you may ask for, be assured that, I have tended the soil with additives and care so that the seedlings will prosper. And yes they do, but come August and September the age old
enemy of all greens are on the prowl or on the wing for a better explanation...the butterfly. Not the romantic coloured butterflies that we see briefly during the summer, but the marauding white cabbage butterfly. Late summer and early autumn this monster is at its most fertile and deposits myriads of eggs on the cabbage leaves so that when the eggs become caterpillars they have an inbuilt larder for their nourishment until it is time for them to crawl off and hibernate during the winter.During the last years I have been at constant war with the cabbage white in order to protect my purple sprouting. At first I bought in good plants and they thrived until the war began when, each day, I
inspected all the leaves and indulged in the massacre of all eggs or young caterpillars as I found them. But this enemy is relentless and replaces all I have got rid of with many more eggs. In September, as usual, I choose a holiday. Left unguarded I return to find my greens looking like Venetian blinds with holes all over them and although I stay with the plants until the spring the yield is very poor.Right. Why not construct a covering to put over the plants which will let the rain through and defeat the butterfly? Yes; well I have done that and again it has been a partial success but not to my liking. A few years ago, talking with a keen allotment holder, he said that I should hold off planting until the end of August just before going away so that the butterfly would not pick up the scent of the greens for some time and by the time I returned I would be able to save the plants. Sounds good but unfortunately that year he did not give me purple sprouting, but I did have a good crop of cauliflowers. Last year I sent away to a seed merchant (I will not mention names), received 24 strong healthy plants and covered them in thin muslin. I arranged with a near neighbour, who was also a keen gardener, to inspect them each day, which he did, and come spring I had strong growing plants which produced..... nothing....just leaves. I am sure the cabbage white was laughing up his wingtip. This year, and that is what I was thinking about, I have bought a cover for a few plants and have left planting the seed until a few weeks ago. They are, at this moment, about three inches high and, before long (for September comes quickly) I am going to transplant them under the cover and look forward to late October when I will take the cover off and, hopefully...hopefully, get through the winter and then savour my cooked purple sprouting broccoli. What’s the betting on that?

MOTHERS’ UNION WAVE OF PRAYER
On Saturday, August 23rd we gathered in church to keep our allotted hour for the Wave of Prayer 9am to 10am. The Wave of Prayer originated in 1920 & is a way of linking all 80 countries of the world where the Mothers’ Union is established. Dioceses in every country have Link Dioceses which are regularly prayed for in our meetings but every year each Diocese has an allotted week which is shared out between all the Branches in that Diocese & a special service is held at a designated time. The Wave of Prayer Service, which ensures that prayers for our Link Dioceses for the world, our own Parishes, our members & any particular problems we feel need our prayers, are said during a special service at an allotted time. At this service candles are also lit to represent the Dioceses linked with our own Diocese of Swansea & Brecon, 7 in all; also for the world-‐wide President & one for our own Diocese & President. Information from the various places is
Parish of Killay September 201411
read out as each candle is lit. This service ensures that prayers are being said somewhere in the world every minute of every day. As a matter of interest our links are 2 in Australia; 4 in Kenya & 1 in Nigeria. As it was an early start plus it being a Bank Holiday weekend we were not sure how many of our members would make
it! A good number were present and, as usual, Carole had put together a lovely service with Alan supplying the appropriate music during our silent times; we even managed an unaccompanied hymn! Our booklet provided a short Preparation, Confession & Thanksgiving sections. Readings were from Psalms & St. John’s Gospel; a questioning rendering of The Lord’s Prayer, followed by all saying the prayer together, intercessions by Pat & Carole & the origin of the Wave of Prayer Service. Carole read Mary Sumner’s Prayer & we all joined in the Mothers’ Union prayer. The candles were lit at the appointed time & we finished with closing prayers by Carole & beautiful music. Those taking part were Margaret Thomas, Betty Nutt, Margaret Jones, Enid Rotheram, Beryl Claybrooke, Phyl Davies, Julie Cole, Margaret Massey & Eileen Wilson. I think we all feel it is a really special time together when we particularly remember those in other countries who are not so fortunate as ourselves.

CHRISTMAS PUDDINGSIt’s coming up to that time of year again and, once again, I will be ordering Christmas puddings. I’m sorry for the early introduction of the list but, the earlier the order goes in, the more profit can be made for the church. Although the Company has increased the price this year, we are sticking with last year’s prices - £5.50 for the small puddings and £10.50 for the large one. We know and expect the high standard of these puddings so please don’t buy from the supermarkets as they do not come anywhere near the quality of these. Support your church and enjoy a gastronomical delight at the same time.List at back of church. Geraldine Rees

Girls Friendly SocietyThe Killay Branch of the Girls Friendly Society (GFS) was started in the late 1980s by Canon David Wilkinson (past Vicar of the Parish and Chaplin to the GFS) and three of our ladies – Mona Diment, Pam Ward and Mary Bawden. The GFS was open to girls between the ages of seven and eleven and met weekly in the Church Hall. Its motto is “Bear ye one another’s burdens and so fulfil the law of Christ”.
The girls used to spend evenings making crafts illustrating the Church’s religious festivals, as well as many other activities. A sponsored skip raised money to buy toys and furniture for the Children’s corner in Brecon Cathedral to which a bus load of children went most years to the annual Deanery Fun Day in June.
For previous World Councils, the Killay Branch would make Welsh bookmarks and dolls for the Welsh delegates to take with them as presents for the other delegates.
Killay had a thriving Branch until 2005 when other organizations (which included “boys”) enticed many of our girls to leave. This together with a lack of leaders meant the Killay Branch closed.
When sitting in Church your gaze may often rest on the GFS Banner. This was made for us by a local lady, Mrs E. Martin and serves as a timely reminder of the many girls that have passed through the GFS Branch in Killay.
Visit by GFS delegatesOn July 30th we entertained 40 delegates from the GFS conference, being held in Swansea, to a buffet supper. Guests came from Japan, United States, England, Australia and, of course, Wales. We brought the GFS Banner from Church to the Hall and also a few Welsh Flags and a little Welsh Doll.
The buffet table was laden with savouries of all sorts, fruit tarts, and other cakes of a Welsh flavour. Many thanks to church members for supplying all these goodies our Guests were very impressed and thanked us for our hard work and generosity.
We talked with many people comparing our life styles, churches and our Welsh history. Before leaving they visited our church.
What a lovely evening of friendship and fellowship accross the World.
Many thanks to everyone who helped in any way for the evening.Betty Nutt.

Congratulations to all those who did well in their A level and GCSE exams. We wish them well as they move on. Also to Rebecca Lewis who has "passed out" from her police training in Hendon. I gather PC Lewis will be policing the streets in the Westminster area, so behave yourselves in London! We wish her every blessing for her future career. Well done.

GERMAN YOUTH CAMPMike Powell’s address to Harald and the German Youth Group on the penultimate evening of their summer camp at Port Eynon........
My dear Harald, team Bruckmuhl and fellow Hillarians of Killay! If I called out the following numbers I wonder whether you could guess what they stood for.....144.......160........14...........9.......... maybe the Hymns at last Sundays service? .......No -‐ In fact it was the amount of food consumed at last Sunday's BBQ; a guesstimate of 144 burgers, 160 hotdogs, 14 apple tarts and 9 Fruits of the forest with a little bit of poetic licence!! It was a joy for all of us to see you all well fed and watered. Special thanks to cooks Steve, Roger, Eileen, Jan and Geraldine and not forgetting Beryl, Sylvia, Pat, young Sam, Pam & Sarah for managing the Kitchen. And also Jem and Hugh for work in the background. It is indeed a privilege and a pleasure for all of us from St Hilary's to be with you tonight to share in the breaking of the bread and drinking of the wine. It has been a moving occasion. As your sixth summer camp here in PORT EYNON draws to a close, and we think back to the first camp of 2004, we all feel better for knowing you; each time you have visited you have been like a breath of fresh air to our church. Your joy has been infectious, your singing and praise has been inspirational -‐ indeed your music has brought new life and vigour to our Church. Here in Port Eynon, your adopted home, you have been, occasionally, watered by the Summer rains & blown over by the westerly breeze but all bonded together to have a splendid time!! For some of you it has been the first time away from home, away from a Bavarian mountain village, away from the family; for some there has been home sickness but through it all there has been a Christian team bonding and this has been evident for all to see. Your joy has shone through. You have visited much of our land here in South Wales and have enjoyed our scenery in town and country; you have supported our teams at Swansea City and Cardiff Blues (and every time they have lost) -‐ something's wrong somewhere!. Indeed you have become so famous, when your coach reached the Liberty Stadium you were ushered into the area reserved for the visiting team coach before they realised their mistake but quite amusing to us! We wish you God speed on your journey home on Thursday. Take all our love with you and hope you will return in 2016 so that it will not be GOOD BYE but ‘auf viederzane’. We send our love to Konny and to Lisa who were unable to travel but were sorely missed. So all that remains to be said are the words of one of our famous songs “We'll always keep a welcome” in the hillsides and the vales of Wales for our brothers and sisters of Bruckmuhl. You have shone your light on us all.MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL. LONG MAY OUR PARTNERSHIP AND FRIENDSHIP CONTINUE.Presentation of Murray's group photo (shown overleaf)

Dear Sylvia and Mike,
Having arrived safely Friday afternoon (coach) and evening (cars), we unloaded all vehicles and the trailer together with some 25 voluntary helpers, opened and unpacked each and every box and bag, cleaned the whole lot thoroughly and stowed it all away in an attic above my garage. Today I have started to read and answer my 250 e-‐mails that I got during the camp. Yes, everything is fine, they're all happy and talk their parents ears off.
We are indeed planning to come again (for the very last time?) in 2016, but there are a few important questions open, so I cannot promise anything at present.
I will burn you a new dvd and send it by mail. What a shame you obviously got a faulty one. I apologize.
Kindest regards, thank you again for all your support und hospitality and give our love and best wishes to everyone in St. Hilary’s.
