From the Vicar June 2011 Message in a bottle Have you ever sent a message in a bottle? If you did, I wonder if you had a reply. I’m still waiting a reply from the one I launched into the ocean 50 years ago! Many people pray as if they are sending a message in a bottle – not sure who might find it or whether anything will happen. We tend to pray these ‘arrow prayers’, like distress flares, when all else fails, for example when someone we love is desperately ill. I hear that many more people pray than believe in God, which perhaps shows we are not as self-sufficient as we would like to be. I for one believe in the power of prayer – that our prayers are heard and answered by God who wants to help us and has the power to do so. Not that he always does, at least not in the way I expect. Nevertheless, I am encouraged by the many people I meet who gain strength and comfort from knowing that others are praying for them, and some of them experience a peace of mind they are unable to explain. I’d love to know what your experience of prayer has been. Just imagine how God deals with all the millions of prayer requests. Maybe he has a heavenly call-centre staffed by an army of angels. In the film ‘Bruce Almighty’, Bruce thinks he can do a better job than God at answering prayers, until he opens God’s prayer inbox. Bruce is completely overwhelmed by the barrage of incoming e-mailed prayers, and covered with yellow prayer post-it notes! Only God can deal with the problems of this world, and with all the prayers about them. Whether you are a prayer fan or prayer sceptic, you have a great opportunity this month to make prayer a priority. Along with hundreds of other churches in Canterbury Diocese, we will be coming together for extra times of prayer - praying for everything from global situations such as war and poverty, to this community and personal needs. It’s part of the 25/7 Live It! Year of Discipleship, and runs between Ascension and Pentecost, 2

nd to 12

th June, recalling the time when the

first disciples of Jesus waited and prayed until they were filled by the Holy Spirit. There will be Morning and Evening Prayer daily in church, plus a special Prayer Breakfast on Saturday 11

th June. You will find full details over page. Why not make

a special note to say a prayer on each of these days – you’ll be in good company, and who knows, God may have a special reply for you! “ …whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24

MARDEN WI It was the evening of our AGM but we started with a talk on the Heritage Centre by David McFarland. The centre opened in 2008 and is run by a large team of volunteers. They have had to deal with over 4000 documents and photos and have presented many exhibitions. A very busy place. The web site is seen all over the world and many people come to research their family backgrounds. A well deserved Archive Award was presented in 2010. We are about to have a red telephone box erected near the library as well as an old war siren. We then went on to debate the Closure of Libraries an issue to be taken up at the AGM in Liverpool and the voting was unanimous to save these valuable centres. Our own AGM followed and Jean and Kay were re –elected as Presidents, Jill Tarry has resigned because of family commitments and she will be sadly missed. She has been very active organising lots of fun things for us but will continue to help in many ways. For the meeting on 2

nd June we will be at the Bowls Club, starting at 7pm.

MARDEN PARISH MAGAZINE - become an editor?

One of our Parish Magazine Editors, Diana Babb, is hoping to move nearer her family in the Midlands and we shall be looking for a replacement editor. Please consider seriously if you could help. There are three editors at present so you would only be called on 4 times a year at the maximum. We use Microsoft Word to edit our magazine - nothing too arduous! For more information please write to [email protected] or phone one of the Editors.

…or to see yourself in print…

Readers of the Marden Parish Magazine always enjoy articles about their village, for instance information about historic locations or memories of past events. Maybe you have news of people who have moved away that, with their permission, could be shared with old friends and neighbours? Perhaps you have a favourite seasonal recipe, and topical gardening tips are always useful! Maybe, just maybe, you’d like to write an occasional column? If you have any information that you think might be of interest to our readers, why not scribble it down and post or email it to any of the editorial team at the addresses on page 22? We’ll do our best to include it as soon

as we can after receiving it!

Church Flowers

After a couple of years at the helm, Kirsten Gower is stepping down as coordinator of the Church Flowers team. We are grateful to Kirsten for all her hard work, especially for the very successful flower festival last year. Is this a job you could do? You will see from the brief description below that it is quite manageable. You do not even need to be a flower arranger, just a flower arranger’s arranger! 1. Organise annual meeting of the team in February/March each year in the

Vestry Hall 2. Co-ordinate the rota for altar, font and Lady Chapel displays and finalise before

end of March 3. Keep contact details up-to-date for the team of flower arrangers 4. Liaise with Jane Phillips and Judy Noakes regarding weddings 5. Write brief report to Annual Church Meeting in March each year 6. Co-ordinate any special occasional events in the church, such as the flower

festival If you would like to know more, please contact Kirsten on 831573. To volunteer, please contact Judy Noakes at the Church Office 831890.

MARDEN SOCIETY

The April meeting, with a talk on 'Ghosts - Fact or Fiction?' was a successful evening. An evening outing is planned for Wednesday June 15

th to the

Cheese Making Farm at Staplehurst, arriving there at 7pm. The Society will leave the car park at 6.30pm to share cars. The tour should last about one hour, with a cheese tasting and an opportunity to buy cheeses after the tour.

Any of those that want to can go on to a local hostelry and have a meal to round off the evening. It would help if members and guests could let me know on 01622 831529 or [email protected] if they are going along so I can let the Farm know approximate numbers.

Mo Clayton Chairman.

MARDEN HERITAGE CENTRE

The next quarterly exhibition at Marden Heritage Centre will be entitled ‘Law and Order’. It will be officially opened by Nigel Cox JP, a Marden resident and local magistrate, on Saturday 28

th May 2011 at 1 pm.

The new exhibition will highlight the misdemeanours from 1564 and includes information from many sources including Workhouse records, extracts from the Maidstone Journal, and County Law before the introduction of the ‘bobby’. We include Parish affairs and the function of the High Constable, punishments, including the use of the gallows at Penenden Heath, Transportation, Whipping, and the Assizes from 1564 to 1602. You will see a Law and Order time line in the 18

th

and 19th century and discover some unusual crimes such as the (male?)

researchers’ favourite - ‘The Sale of a Wife’.

MARDEN SOCIETY

Last month we published the first part of Eunice Doswell’s article on the talk by Geoff Doel and Mick Lynn as they entertained The Marden Society with their folk calendar accompanied by appropriate musical instruments and singing. This month we publish the second part. Maypoles were rare in Kent . This dancing from Italy was introduced to England by John Ruskin, famous art critic, and became more wide-spread when added to the teacher training programme. May was regarded as the end of winter and a good time for planting. Flower garlands were made and children progressed singing a May Carol. For this they missed school. Jack in the Green was chosen by the chimney sweeps. These ceremonies are still celebrated on Spring Bank Holiday in Hastings , Rochester and Whitstable. Later in the year came the Horn Fairs, which were quite raucous, including cross dressing and one of the musicians wearing a pair of horns. In the 1720s, the Horn Fair was described by Daniel Defoe: Charleton, a village famous, or rather infamous for the yearly collected rabble of mad-people, at Horn-Fair; the rudeness of which I cannot but think, is such as ought to be suppressed, and indeed in a civiliz'd well govern'd nation, it may well be said to be unsufferable. The mob indeed at that time take all kinds of liberties, and the women are especially impudent for that day; as if it was a day that justify'd the giving themselves a loose to all manner of indecency and immodesty, without any reproach, or without suffering the censure which such behaviour would deserve at another time. The Ebernoe horn fair in Sussex is unusual in that it takes place on the cricket field after a match when the highest scoring batsman is presented with the horns of a ram roasted at the scene.

At Harvest Time a corn maiden (dolly) was made from the last sheaf of corn. John Barleycorn is a tuneful song reminding us of this season. In Midwinter out came the Hooden Horse, it was considered appropriate for a man to be disguised as an animal. He came with his hoodeners (one with a black face) and musicians. Two of these horses’ heads are held by Maidstone Museum . Finally you had the Mummers’ plays, with the chief characters being St George, the Turkish Knight, the doctor and a green Santa. Any watchers of Lark Rise to Candleford would recognise this. Eunice Doswell

CHARITY OF THE MONTH

VALERIE TAYLOR TRUST CENTRE for the REHABILITATION of the PARALYSED, BANGLADESH Once again, the time has come to demonstrate our long-standing support for the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed in Bangladesh (CRP) through the UK support charity, the Valerie Taylor Trust. It doesn’t seem like 3 months since a group from the church visited CRP after the visit to Bishop David in Burma. Having heard so much about CRP over the years, the rest of the group were delighted to be able to see for themselves all they had heard. We were particularly pleased when Valerie Taylor, the founder of CRP in 1979 and still the co-ordinator, met us at Dhaka Airport, but were quite shocked by the thousands of people outside the airport and surrounding roads that we had to negotiate - there had been a huge Muslim rally near the airport that had just ended as we arrived. Over the three days the group were there, visits were made to all the departments of CRP at Savar, the main hospital; at Mirpur, a large multi-storey unit in the suburbs of Dhaka, and the women’s unit at Gonokbari. The group members were very impressed by the scale of the operation at Savar and the size of the site, which was described as a haven of peace and hope. Particular interest was taken in the Paediatric Unit, where children with cerebral palsy were assessed, treated and their mothers also trained in their care for when they returned home. Patients and staff were more than happy to be seen in the departments, questions asked and for photographs to be taken. Children in the integrated school on site were as interested in us as we were in them and came up to us hoping for photographs to be taken. The work in Physiotherapy, Speech/Language Therapy and Occupational Therapy and new initiatives in Paper-based Technology for therapeutic and commercial purposes drew particular interest. The well-established metal and wood workshops which make CRP’s wheelchairs, Stryker beds, trolleys and wooden implements, tools, toys and furniture - some for sale – were worth the visit. Prosthetics and Orthotics are a fast developing unit and the various appliances and aids were demonstrated. At Gonokbari, we met some of the women being trained in embroidery, sewing, tailoring and operating sewing machines. Many of the items made – woven bags, slippers, scarves etc. – are sold to raise income. Most of the machine training is sponsored by Marks and Spencer under the “Marks and Start” scheme, which trains the women in industrial machining thereby enabling them to gain employment in garment factories near their homes. They are valued workers as they are well trained, conscientious, good time-keepers and reliable.

Page 23: Marden Parish Magazine

12

There is a well-established nursery on site which generates income for CRP, and a new development is the cultivation of mushrooms in a shed using a special organic compost in plastic bags, the mushrooms growing through holes in the sides. The departments at Mirpur are the same as those at Savar but patients attending this unit are expected to pay towards their treatment, whereas, at Savar, most patients receive treatment free of charge eg. 50% of spinal cord injury patients. Some private facilities are available at Mirpur. The group left CRP, after 3 days, wishing that more time could have been spent there and Brian and Ann did stay for a further 2 weeks to spend time at CRP, visit friends and see some more of Bangladesh. This has only been a brief insight into the visit and the work of CRP. There will be an opportunity to learn more of the visit and of developments at CRP at a Report Back Meeting to the Parish at 7.30pm on Friday 3

rd June, 2011 in the Vestry

Hall. Members of the group will provide descriptions of the visit and their impressions, photographs, a DVD of CRP’s work, cards and some goods produced by CRP and typical Bangladeshi refreshments. All are welcome and although admission is free, donations towards CRP’s work would be gratefully appreciated. Further support for CRP/VTT can be shown by entering or supporting the Annual Golf Day to be held on Thursday 23

rd June – tee-off at 9.00am – at Weald of

Kent Golf Club. Coffee and bacon rolls, 18 holes of golf, a 2-course meal and prizes included in the entry fee of £40.00. A raffle may also be held to boost funds. Details and entry forms available from Brian Woodgate.- see below. Finally, by courtesy of Mr. Ali at the Taj of Kent Restaurant, Marden, a Dinner in aid of CRP/VTT will be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday 29

th June, 2011. A

selection of food will be available and your support will be very much appreciated. Tickets are £17.50 and are available from Brian Woodgate, 01622 743011; email: [email protected] Brian Woodgate

MARDEN PRIMARY SCHOOL With the Easter break coinciding with so many Bank Holidays, it feels as though we have had the whole of month of April off school! Consequently, this will be a short article this month! We used the few days between our Easter break and the extra bank holiday, to celebrate the Royal Wedding. Each class had a programme of special activities – there was a frenzy of cooking; investigating the Royal family tree; making bunting; programming robots to follow the parade route; planning a street party within a budget; designing invitations; planning menus; and so it went on. Great fun was had and it all culminated with a picnic and games on the field – the children ate the food they had prepared in the week and dressed up in various themes – princes and princesses, wedding guests, and; red, white and blue! Over the last year, we have been honoured to be asked to contribute art work of various kinds to displays. One of the results of this is that a link between us and Marden Library has become established and the children’s artwork is regularly displayed there. Currently, there is a display of 'The Great Fire of London' collage pictures made by Shrimps class. We hope that you will enjoy seeing their work in this setting. It will be on show for the next few weeks. Amanda Reardon, School Manager. [email protected]

PADDOCK WOOD & DISTRICT SWIMMING POOL FUND DISTRIBUTION

Over 20 years ago a group of residents of Paddock Wood formed a Swimming Pool Fund Committee to try to facilitate the building of a swimming pool in the town. It began to raise funds not to fully fund a pool but to show local commitment for one. The Committee lobbied for a pool in Paddock Wood but TWBC decided that the town did not have a large enough catchment area to warrant a publicly funded pool. The next development was for a private swimming coaching company to agree to build a commercially run swimming pool in Paddock Wood. They planned to fund the building of the pool but wanted Paddock Wood Town Council to give or loan the land for the pool. Tunbridge Wells Borough Town Council gave planning permission for the pool to be built at Putlands Sports Centre. The problem of the possibility of the private swimming coaching company going into liquidation and Paddock Wood Town Council being left with a pool that it could not fund could not be resolved.

Page 26: Marden Parish Magazine

14

The Paddock Wood primary school would have preferred to have a pool built on school land. The school approached the same swimming coaching company with a plan where the school would sell off a small parcel of school land for housing. With the money raised from the sale of this land the school would build a swimming pool within its grounds. The same swimming coaching company would contract to manage and run the pool giving pupils swimming lessons whilst selling swimming to the general public out of school hours. The local population however objected to the new housing, the new pool and the public access to the pool so the scheme collapsed. Paddock Wood and District Swimming Pool Fund Committee had amassed a considerable amount of money. The members of the committee decided to disband the committee but not before they had dispersed the funds. Meetings between the Swimming Pool Fund Committee and the Paddock Wood Sports Association were held and it was decided, with the agreement of the Charity Commission, that the money should be given locally for sports & leisure purposes . All of the funds have now been dispersed to PWTC, for adult exercise equipment, local schools and associations. A full archive of the distribution will be lodged with the Paddock Wood Town Council. A copy of the distribution account is available from the Fund Chairman Vera Rees, Chairman, 01622 871125

100th Birthday Celebration

Our May issue included an item celebrating John Hardy’s 100

th birthday

but unfortunately the reproduction of the photographs made them rather darker than we would have wished. The Editors would like to apologise to John and his family and hope that the photograph reproduced here makes suitable redress.

HAPPY TIMES FOR THE CHOIR

There was cause for a great deal of joy and celebration on Easter Saturday, April 23

rd when the whole choir sang at

the wedding of one of their members. Sarah Stevens married fellow teacher Jolyon MacCarthy in church and this happy photo was taken immediately after the wedding. In May, several of the Young Singers - the junior part of the church Choir - received their Royal School of Church Music light blue ribbons and medals from vicar James Robertson. Medals were achieved by Naomi Rosser, Bethany Lowther and (pictured) Henry Mantle, Georgina Cox, Florence Rowson-Stevens and Dolly Carter. Barbara Robertson

Q) I purchased some tickets to a music concert from what looked like a very official website and later discovered that I got completely scammed. What do you do if you are worried about buying tickets from bogus websites?

A) It is important to be aware of certain issues before making an online purchase and be confident the site is genuine. Researching the website that you are thinking of purchasing from can help determine how credible a site actually is.

For example it is imperative that every website has a full street address and a UK landline number, so this is definitely worth checking.

If you are still in doubt, don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions before you make your purchase. You could ask:

When will the ticket be dispatched and how will you be notified? You should also find out what the company’s policy on refunds is.

When paying for tickets online, always pay by credit card. Under the Consumer Credit Act, your card issuer is jointly liable for the failure to provide goods or services if the cash price of a single ticket is over £100.

If you believe that you have been a victim of scam you can report the incident to the police and get a crime reference number. and… there’s now the CAB Advice Bus

To meet the need of the residents of the villages in the eastern end of the borough, we are starting a new service.

From June 6

th our Advice bus will be calling

at 8 villages on a weekly basis to give confidential, independent advice and information.

As the service evolves, we hope to offer appointments, but at the beginning we will see clients on a drop-by basis. Parking spots close to the village centres are being agreed with Parish Councils, but thanks to the generous support from various sources including ‘The Friends of TWCAB’, Roger Manning KCC, Cripps Harries Hall, The Rotary Club of the Pantiles and many others, you should be able to spot us!
