District Governor Keith’s Report

The chartering of the Otaki Club is high on the agenda of events taking place in September and one that I am very much looking forward to. It is the culmination of a lot of effort by Don and his team as well as Neil Tunnicliffe and Waikanae Club, the sponsoring club. We should also acknowledge the assistance of Huck Taingahue, the new club consultant who provided much needed advice and guidance.

One of the issues I mention at my club visits is the one of leadership both within clubs and also the district and I have recently written to all clubs inviting them to nominate 2-3 members who would benefit from further training so that we can have a pool of people who have the capability to take on higher office. Sometimes it is only a matter of overcoming a fear of what these higher positons might entail rather than the lack of any ability to do the job.

I have recently posted out a DVD to all clubs which contains the following information:

This DVD should provide a good source for information about a number of district programmes. In addition to this material there are many programmes covering all sorts of topics on the international website.

The Global Service Action Campaign for the quarter ending is Sharing the Vision. Clubs should plan vision health projects and work with the visually impaired. Many Lions already celebrate World Sight Day in October. This is a great month to organize a vision screening, volunteer at a nearby Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centre, organize an eyeglass collection or an activity to benefit the visually impaired in your community.

October also sees the holding of Lions Awareness Week. The week stars on Monday 6 October. The reason for the Week is to have an annual specifically designated Lions Awareness week within Multiple District 202 with the aims of a) raising the profile and awareness of Lions in all Districts and Clubs throughout NZ by running similarly focused activities in the same week, b) to provide a Media opportunity for publicity in newspapers and on television and radio both in local communities and nationally and c) as noted above, to encompass LCI World Service Day – the date for this is always 8 October. Suggestions on what type of activities that can be carried out during the week are listed on the NZ Lions website (lionsclubs.org.nz) in the Members Area under

Activities. The Lions Awareness Week is listed towards the bottom of the left hand menu.

Nelly Sinclair - Zone 3 Chair

My name is Nelly Sinclair and I am at present Zone 3 Chair. I am married and live on a dairy farm in Ballance Pahiatua. I have three grown up children and work part-time. My husband Stewart is a member of the Woodville Lions Club and I am Treasurer of the Tararua District Lions Club. I have only been a Lion for 8 years and in that time have held the positions of President, Treasurer, twice been a Zone Chair and also held the position on Cabinet on the Youth Team. I joined Lions to help in the community and their motto “We Serve” is my whole reason for being in Lions

What is the Centennial Service Challenge? The Centennial Service Challenge (CSC) is an initiative to celebrate Lions’ 100 years of service and challenge clubs to participate in all four Global Service Action Campaigns to benefit 100 million people by December 2017.

What are the four Global Service Action Campaigns? Listed below are the four Global Service Action Campaigns and corresponding months designated for Lions participation, though clubs have the flexibility to conduct these projects throughout the year.

Engaging Our Youth – August Sharing the Vision – October Relieving the Hunger – December/January Protecting Our Environment – April

How does the goal of serving a 100 million people break down across these four areas? The four goal areas seek to benefit 100 million people overall, with 25 million people benefitting in each of the four areas.

Which donations a club makes to LCIF will qualify for the CSC? One of the most effective ways a club can support the CSC every fiscal year, and qualify for recognition, is to support LCIF. Any donation to LCIF that is earmarked for sight, youth, One Shot One Life Measles Initiative, or disaster relief (which will be used in part by LCIF for families experiencing food shortages in the wake of disasters) will qualify for the CSC and club patch recognition. Such donations will qualify for meeting up to 3 of the 4 challenge areas of the CSC if a club earmarks their donation to a particular LCIF Fund: Youth (youth), Measles Initiative (youth), Sight (sight), and Disaster Relief (hunger). LCIF will calculate the number served in these cases.

District 202M Awards

1. District 202M Awards will be assessed over a calendar year at Convention in March of the next year.

2. Awards may applied for by – clubs, Zone Chairmen or individual person.

3. Application must be submitted in writing to the District Governors nominated Awards Committee by 31 January each

year.

1. District 202M Youth Award

a. To further promote Youth activities within the District. This award is to be awarded annually to the Club who

submits a Youth Activity Project (small or large) to the District Governor of the day, by the 31st January each

year.

b. The winning entry of the District Contest will be forwarded to the Executive Officer as the District’s Entry to

the Pat Ryan Youth Award, judged, and presented at the Multiple District Convention.

2. District 202M Administration Award

a. This award is presented to the Club, who, in the opinion of the District Awards Committee, has

performed with distinction, and in addition has met administration and reporting criteria to be

published in Inform and on the Lions website www.lionsclubs.org.nz

3. District 202M Sight Award

a. The award is to be presented to an individual Lion or Lions Club in District 202 M for the most

innovative vision related project.

b. The winning entry of the District Contest will be forwarded to the Executive Officer as the District’s Entry to

the LEI Award, judged, and presented at the Multiple District Convention.

4. District 202M Membership Award

a. The Club with the highest net gain in membership for the calendar year will be presented with this award at the

following convention.

b. The aim is to recognise Clubs who have worked extremely hard to increase their membership, and have

achieved this goal.

c. The winner of this award will be considered for an entry to the Keith Mitchell Award for Membership Growth,

Extension and Retention, for the previous lions year.

5. District 202M Project Award

a. The purpose of this award is to encourage participation in Community Service Projects. It is

permissible for each Lions or Leo Club to submit one entry each Lions year for consideration for this award.

b. The winner of the District Award is the automatic entry into the Multiple District Ron Usmar Award for

Community Service.

6. District 202M Bulletin Award

a. This Award is for the best Bulletin (paper or electronic). The Inform Editor must receive the Club Bulletin each

month; - the Club that does not follow this procedure is automatically eliminated from entry.

b. The Winner of the District Bulletin Award goes forward to the Ron Rowe Bulletin Award.

7. District 202M Use of Club Webpages on MD202 website

a. To promote the use of the MD202 Website within the District.

b. To encourage Club use of websites to promote Lions.

c. To stimulate friendly rivalry between Clubs for creative use of all aspects of the website.

8. District 202M Lloyd Morgan Lions Clubs Charitable Trust Support Award

a. Aim is to encourage Lions Clubs to give regular support to the Lloyd Morgan Lions Clubs Charitable

Trust.

b. (The lion was presented to Ngaire Morgan, First Lady of Lions Clubs International in 1979/80 with

warm affection from the Headquarters Staff of the Lions Clubs International. It was purchased by

Stuart Patterson at an auction of Lloyd Morgan memorabilia at the MD Convention in Taupo in April

1991.)

a. To the club which may not be the top in an individual area but has the best all round performance.

Club Highlights

Lions Clubs of Pahiatua, Woodville and Tararua District Lions Clubs from all over the Southern North Island banded together to raise money for an entire floor of the new Ronald McDonald House in Wellington Several years ago. It was named the Lions Den and the members of the Lions Clubs of Pahiatua, Woodville and Tararua District together raised money for the naming rights to one of these rooms. When it was opened we were all invited to the Opening. Since then we carry on contributing to the running of Ronald McDonald House. Last year we all decided to brighten up the room with some pictures so a member of the Tararua Lions took some photos and had them mounted on canvas. These photos - one of Eketahuna, one of Pahitua and one of Woodville were taken to Wellington in July. New President Jo Smith accompanied by Nelly Sinclair presented them. They hope they will give the families staying in the room some memories of their homes as they wait for their loved ones to recover in Wellington Hospital.

Tinakori Lions had a very successful stall in the Northland hall in August selling cakes & produce. The money we made

is going to the Wellington children’s hospital. In September we have our annual book sale at 275 Karori Road. The proceeds are going to the Wellington Free Ambulance.


The “ROAR” from Zone 4 - Activities for July Lions Clubs meet the needs of local communities and the world. With 1.35 million members – who perform community service in 209 countries and geographic areas – are different in many ways, but share a core belief: community is what we make it. When you join Lions, you join a global service network. So, at the same time you’re doing local community service, you can also contribute to Lions volunteer efforts around the world. Lions Clubs International Mission Statement: To empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions clubs. Carterton Lions Club recently had a fantastic turnout of 13 members, 3 wives and two children for a working bee to plant 200 trees at Carters Reserve. Carterton Central Lions provided a delicious morning tea which was thoroughly enjoyed. The club has begun fundraising towards the $98,000 required for the Charles Rooking Carter Bronze Statue to be erected in Millennium Park on the corner of Belvedere Rd and High St in Carterton. The Carterton District Council have pledged their support of the Statue and are going to invest in the refurbishment of the Millennium park to a high standard which will make it more inviting for Tourists and the local community to visit. Masterton Holdsworth Lions Club members continue to make and provide biscuits for the District Nurses or Home Caregivers to treat some of the olderly clients with homemade baking. Some members are continuing to support primary schools as “Reading Programme Assistants”. Carterton Central Lions Club entered into the spirit of Carterton’s mid- year Christmas display with a fabulous children’s festive dinner table and a tree of memories, displaying much loved decorations. Members and friends enjoyed the movie “Jersey Boys”, a fund raiser courtesy of the Regent Theatre. Masterton Host Waipoua Lions Club recently completed an under six years old Children’s Playground at Henley Lake and the refurbishment of the Kopuaranga Hall kitchen area. Thanks to all the sponsors involved with the playground. Recent fundraising has been achieved by the hosting of Lincoln University students and firewood raffles. In October Featherston Lioness Club will celebrate 25 years as a Club. The club began with 29 charter members and still have 7 of the original 29 members. All members enjoy the common goal of Lions "We Serve". There is an interesting year planned with 2 exciting projects.

Proposed Lions Project

Walk from Wellington to heighten awareness of the need for disaster

recovery planning

Situation

Emergency disaster planners predict the possibility/probability of a major incident, which will affect the Wellington region resulting in serious damage to infrastructure. Recovery may be slow and people must be prepared to take care of themselves for several days or longer.

Of particular concern is the thousands of Johnsonville, Tawa, Porirua, Mana and Kapiti residents who commute to Wellington daily and damage to roads is likely to mean the only way home from Wellington for them will be on foot. This project will provide up to 100 commuters with the opportunity of testing their equipment and ability to complete the walk.

While it is well understood that in a real disaster a direct route via damaged roads even on foot may be difficult, this exercise will at least give an indication of the reality of such a journey.

Mission

1. To heighten awareness of the need for workers in Wellington of the necessity to have to walk 50+km home, following a major disaster.

2. To provide an opportunity for workers to experience for themselves, the reality of such a walk

3. To better understand and test what emergency equipment would be needed to facilitate the journey.

4. To reach a wide audience through media coverage of the event to encourage better personal disaster plan-ning.

Execution

Phase 1 The walk will commence at Wellington Railway Station at 9am on a Saturday and follow the seaward side of the Old Hutt Road to Ngauranga Gorge, up the gorge, through Johnsonville, along the Old Porirua Road to Takapu Road, through Tawa to Porirua (utilising the Kenepuru Stream Walkway), cross the motorway ramp at the north end of Porirua and follow the walkways via Paremata Railway Station to Ngatitoa Domain, where the first day’s walk will terminate. Risk points identified to date include crossing highway at the bottom of Ngauranga Gorge, negotiating the roundabout at the north end of the Johnsonville shops, lack of a footpath on part of Old Porirua Road north of Churton Park

Phase 2 Assemble at Ngatitoa Domain at 9am. The walk will then follow the walkway which runs through to Plimmerton, then utilising the walkway up and over the Pukerua Bay Hill, follow the footpath along the Centennial Highway into Ames Street at Paekakariki, through the village, along The Parade, through the Queen Elizabeth Park walkway to Raumati, along Raumati Beach, and finish at the Marine Gardens to a Mayoral welcome and BBQ. Hear Ye, Hear Ye District Governor, Keith Kenderdine and the Lions Club of Waikanae are pleased to announce the upcoming District 202M Convention to be held on the weekend of Friday 13th March to Sunday 15th March, 2015. The venue will be the outstanding Southwards Car Museum at Otaihanga between Waikanae and Paraparaumu. The theme of the Convention will be “Vintage”: Vintage Cars Vintage Music Vintage costumes on Saturday night Please mark these dates in your diaries and be sure to book accommodation for the Convention as early as possible as accommodation can be at a premium on the Kapiti Coast at this time of the year. Please find a list of accommodation options further down. Guest Speakers Mary Fisher, a blind swimmer who has won a large amount of medals, many of them Gold at International Disabled Swimming Meets around the world; and Gary Veenstra from the Blind Foundation who is an outstanding speaker on many topics. Saturday’s Keynote Speaker will be International Director, Eric Carter.


Entertainment

Hear the world famous Southwards Wurlitzer Organ played during the Opening Flag Ceremony. Be lead through the Saturday night by an expert Master of Ceremonies, dancing to the music and reliving your teenage memories with music from a 1950’s Juke Box.

Enjoy a display by a local Rock ‘n Roll dance group and then take the opportunity to relive your own dance steps.

Enjoy a BBQ lunch on Sunday while watching the Wellington Model Yacht Club sail their yachts on the Southwards lake.

Things to do on the Kapiti Coast If you are early or have some time to spare at the conclusion of the Convention, here are some ideas on how to occupy your time: Golf - Bring your golf clubs – there are four golf clubs in close proximity to the venue:

Otaki Golf Course;

Waikanae Golf Course which is right next door to an accommodation option, the Waikanae Beach Motel;

A small 9-hole golf course on the east side of the Railway line at Paraparaumu; and

The famous Paraparaumu Beach Links Course where Tiger Woods played in the NZ Open a few years ago.

Kapiti Island Once used as a base by the great Maori Warrior, Te Rauparaha, Kapiti Island became a Forest and Bird Reserve in 1897 and a Marine Reserve in 1992. The island is sanctuary for endangered species such as the Little Spotted Kiwi and Saddleback. Native water fowl can be viewed at Okupe Lagoon. The cost of visiting this wonderful reserve has been reduced drastically recently. Fishing, diving and sight-seeing excursions are available from Paraparaumu. A Visitors Permit must be obtained before visiting the Island and they are available from the Department of Conservation or the Visitors Information Centre at Paraparaumu. Nikau Gardens A fine example of native coastal rainforest with bushwalks and a special butterfly enclosure featuring hundreds of native species. Paekakariki Hill Lookout Enjoy panoramic views across to Kapiti Island through to the Marlborough Sounds and as far north as Mount Taranaki. Paekakariki Railway Museum Relive the steam engine era with three restored steam locomotives, one is called “Paschendaele”. Southwards Car Museum When Sir Len Southward brought a Model T Ford in 1956 it signalled the start of the largest private collection of cars in the Southern Hemisphere. About half of the 250 cars on its books are on display at any one time, such as Marlene Dietrich’s Rolls Royce, a Chicago Gangster’s armour-plated Limousine, the 1955 Mercedes Gold Wing, the 1938 Bugatti and the 1915 Stutz. Te Horo Vineyards Visit this vineyard which offers fruit and grapevines. THE PARTNERS’ PROGRAMME The Partners’ Programme is still being finalised, however it will include the following features: A visit to the Kapiti Horse-Vaulting Club in Waikanae. This group has recently returned from a Horse-Vaulting Competition overseas and have agreed to provide a vaulting display of their skills; A visit to the Nga Manu Sanctuary – this is a 15ha Sanctuary including a Kiwihouse, native plant museum and alpine garden and fernery. There will also be an opportunity to enjoy your lunch at this beautiful reserve. A visit to the Lindale Tourist and Agriculture Centre. This complex, north of Paraparaumu, features specialist shops, a café, restaurant, wine bar and art gallery. There may also be an opportunity to sample specialist teas and wine. Accommodation Options On The Kapiti Coast For 202M District Convention 13th to 15th March, 2015.

Tony Parker has now talked to all the local motel managers and B&B owners on the Kapiti Coast . The following Moteliers are prepared to give a 10% discount to Lions who identify themselves as convention attendees.
