Dear Members,
It is nice to be back in the swing of things at our first business meeting
since June. I thought it went well and enjoyed the meeting.
Our Quilt show is going along very well and we all are anxious for the
event. I encourage all members to participate, it is a lot of fun. If you
are a new member and need assistance deciding how to help just ask
me and I will see that your questions are answered. You can call or
e-mail me if you need help. Phone # is 537-2611 and e-mail
[email protected]. also if any new member has any questions
about anything in the guild, please ask me and if I don't know I will find
the answer. I want all members to feel comfortable and enjoy the
guild.
The workshop next week will be held on the second floor at the church
and there is an elevator, if you cannot find the elevator please ask
someone since Stitch and Chat will be held downstairs in the regular
room.
I would also like to thank all who sent cards and called regarding my

Life is getting crowded with activities everywhere! Makes life interesting but VERY busy. The Program Committee will be making plans for 2013 so if there’s a technique or project you’re interested in either learning or teaching, tell them! The members are Chris Gillespie, Dorothy Najarian, Phyllis Prideaux, Mary O’Neill and yours truly.
Professional Workshop: Nancy Chong’s workshops are scheduled for September 20 and 21. Wait ‘til you see what the participants learn and have to show and say…
Crayon Quilts and Farmer’s Wife Quilts: The Crayon Quilt Challenge Quilts will be hung in a special exhibit at the TRQG show in October 26 and 27. The deadline for entry forms is September 20th----very likely the day you read this. If you made a quilt---even if you didn’t have it for the Holiday Luncheon last year, it’s still eligible to be entered in the show. The Crayon Quilts will not be a judged category.
Sue Kleeman, who presented the Farmer’s Wife Quilt project is hoping for a large group of quilts to be hung. They will be hung together and the entry form should have “FW” on it to identify its origin. All sizes and designs are included if they are based on the Farmer’s Wife Quilt book.
Charity Workshops: The third Thursday of each month is dedicated to charity quilts and projects. If you have a favorite pattern you’d like to share, or have a bunch of blocks to be sewn, be sure to sign up for a month---the more the merrier.
General Information:
All scheduled workshops will begin at 9:00 am. Going forward, there will be a sign up sheet for any scheduled workshop, whether professional or by a guild member. The person running the workshop should be sure to have a sign up sheet available for the business meeting and stitch ‘n chat so plans can be made to accommodate the number of people who plan to attend. CWS
The Angel Fund received $116.99 in donations. In addition, the amount of school supplies received was overwhelming. A comforter set, bed linens, cell phones, and feminine, paper and plastic products were also donated. We want to thank all the members for their generosity. For the October business meeting, please bring single-ply toilet paper and paper towels with an emphasis on toilet paper. Besides providing gifts to an adopted family for Christmas, we would like to make Christmas stockings (adult/child) and stuff them with gloves, scarves, etc. that are collected at the holiday luncheon. Per a CWS staff member they hope to be able to give us an approximate number of residents in the shelter as December approaches. As a Thursday charity project, we want to make November 15th the tentative date for making the stockings. God bless you, Betty Williams and Chantal Huestis

LAP ROBES
I was just overwhelmed when I had 16 quilts to deliver this month. They were brought to Two Rivers Neuse Campus Nursing home., Carebridge Nursing Home; Sterling House, and Two Rivers Trent Nursing Home. Lap Quilts were made by many including Kay Amsler, Naomi Durkee; Pat Kreiger, Morag Chessman, Gail Schiller, Mary Beth Seidenfieldn Frances Connor in conjunction with Sandy Cluckey, Mary O;Neil, Dorothy Gibson in conjunction with Lilly Lucier, Catherine Sadler and Janet Mc Lean. Keep up the good work as these are so greatly appreciated. I know that many of you will be busy working on your quilts for the show, but the retreat is coming up and I will have fabric for many of you to make easy lap quilts. as well as fidget quilts which those in the nursing homes just love.

CHARITY SEW DAY - 3rd Thursday of each month
FALL QUILTING RETREAT AT THE BEACH
NOVEMBER 5 – 9, 2012 September Update: We only have 6 openings for the retreat. If anyone wishes to attend, please contact me before September 30, as we will be reserving rooms. Dorothy and I will be reaching out to the quilt shops nearby to see if we can get discounts during the retreat. More info on this next month. In addition, we are planning on two events…… A sewing project activity and a game night for those that choose to participate. The sewing project is a tri-fold Quilters Wallet that was shared at the September Guild Meeting. I will be providing a material list later this month to all who have signed up for the retreat. The Quilter’s wallet will use texture magic and a quick, easy way to put in zippers. It will take about 2 ½ hours to complete. This is tentatively planned for 2:00 on Wednesday, Nov. 7. We will have a game night that we all can participate in. Please bring 3 fat quarters to play this game. We are tentatively planning this game for Thursday night at 7:00 and after the game we will share with each other our projects that we worked on during the retreat. It will be LOTS of FUN …. Many Thanks to Eleanor Bryant, a longtime member of the guild and a past President, for her donation of 6 large boxes of quilting books for the guild to use as desired. It was decided to sell them in the guild booth at the quilt show. Eleanor has moved into the Courtyards and is no longer able to do much sewing. We thank her for her generosity! Laurene Gaskins
Quilts for Afghanistan - Quilts for Afghanistan: Our troops being air evacuated daily from
Afghanistan are in need of quilts to keep them warm during their flight to receive medical care.
These quilts will remain with the injured serviceman or woman. Since the planes are

configured to have the stretchers stacked 2 -3 high, the quilt size needs to be limited to no
more than 36-50 inches wide and 48-65 inches long. This will allow the stretchers to fit into the
“D” rings easily.
The question was asked this morning about blankets being provided by the government. The
answer I received was that once a blanket is provided to an injured soldier it is not always
returned to the Casualty Air Staging Facility (CASF). Many times more than one blanket is
needed to keep a patient warm while in flight as the cargo planes are not designed for human
comfort at 30-40 thousand feet in the air. A quilt can give both warmth and comfort to an
injured soldier, as well as relieve the chronic shortage of blankets at the CASF. I know the
nursing staff and patients are very thankful for all quilts received.
If you have made a quilt that is in need of a home, please consider sending it to our troops
awaiting air evacuation. The only request is that the quilts do not look “frufru” or juvenile.

your quilt.

Our bylaws state that we conduct meetings following Roberts Rules of order, therefore if you would like to speak to the membership, raise your hand, be recognized, give your name and state your business. In order to try to make the meeting shortened, please try to arrive 30 minutes early (9:30am) to do your sign in, get Block of the month, take care your procedural items before the meeting is called to order at 10:00am. The quilt show is just a month away. Some thoughts/answers:
How do I sign up to work at the show? Cathy Cox is our Show Volunteers Chairperson. She has sign-up sheets at meetings and stitch and chat, but I just spoke with her and the very best way at this point in time is to email her with the day and time you are available to help out. There are sit down jobs, walk around jobs, reach up high jobs and people friendly jobs. We need volunteers for the consignment (quilts for sale) booth, (sit down), floor monitors (walk around/people friendly), return quilts to owners (Saturday after the show) about 8 more people to hang the quilts(reach up high) on Thursday, 25th, starting at 9:30. There are other jobs with various time slots open, just ask Cathy how you can help out. Contact her directly by phone(252) 876-5200 or email: [email protected].
Publicity: We have lots of publicity out, but in these last days, word of mouth, and sharing with your friends/family & civic groups will be a tremendous help. Don’t be shy! Share the excitement. We have 15 Vendors, so the shopping alone will be fun!
Quilts for Sale: the deadline for quilts for sale registration forms was Sept 20th.
However, if you have a quilt that you did not enter in the show but still want to put in the sale booth, Pat Donnelly & Joyce Weller will take your form & quilt on Monday the 22nd when quilts are dropped off. The form is on our website.

HAWAIIAN APPLIQUÉ Teacher: Nancy Lee Chong
Hawaiian quilts look awesome in their symmetry and beauty, and yet are surprisingly easy to make. In this class,
you will begin either a block or a wall quilt. You will have hands-on experience with cutting out a Hawaiian
design, basting, and hand needle turn appliqué. Even though we work on a relatively small project in class, you
will know everything you need to make a large Hawaiian quilt. This class is process-oriented, not product-

oriented, so you will finish the day learning Nancy’s stress-free needle turn appliqué techniques on a piece of
“practice work.” All experience levels welcome.
2 FABRIC APPLIQUÉ QUILT Teacher: Nancy Lee Chong
Nancy’s unique designs for the two Fabric Appliqué' Quilts by Pacific Rim Quilt Company are fabulously bold,
quick and easy! For this class, Nancy has designed several small 2FAQ patterns that are 11”x17”, so in one day
you get to learn it all – how to prepare your fabrics, and how to use her stress-free needle turn appliqué
techniques. All levels of experience are welcome--this is the class if you want to learn to appliqué' or perfect
your needle turn appliqué skills.
2-FABRIC APPLIQUÉ QUILT SUPPLY LIST Teacher: Nancy Lee Chong Website: www.prqc.com Email:
[email protected] Using my stress-free needle turn hand appliqué techniques, you will begin a small wall quilt
similar to Pacific Rim Quilt Company’s pattern line “2-Fabric Appliqué Quilts.” Attached are photos of the
designs available for this class project. The wall quilt you start in class will finish at approximately 11” x 17”. You
will select one of the designs below and bring the fabrics you wish to use. I will provide the free pattern in class.
I strongly suggest that beginners (and those who want to maximize their class experience) choose the right-
hand design below, because it was designed to be a good learning experience, not just a pretty design, like
the others. If you wish more than one, you may purchase from Nancy during class.
Before coming to class, wash all fabrics to make sure they are pre-shrunk and colorfast.
APPLIQUE' FABRIC: 1/2 yard. This amount includes enough for the binding. If you don’t intend to finish the class project, you can bring just one fat quarter for the appliqué. (If you are using directional fabric where the design is parallel to selvedge, bring 5/8 yard instead of fat quarter.) AS YOU LOOK AT THE DESIGNS BELOW, THE APPLIQUE IS THE DARK FABRIC AND THE ONE THAT DEFINES THE SUBJECT MATTER/MOTIF. You can use a light appliqué' fabric on a dark background.
Fat quarter background fabric (approx. 18’ x 21”). This should be a strong contrast with the appliqué fabric. This amount does not include enough for the binding.
You will eventually need one fat quarter of fabric for the backing, and batting, to complete the quilt, but you need not bring them to class.
Needle: Milliners/Straw needle size 10 or 11 (any brand).*
Thread that matches the appliqué fabric. I prefer a thin cotton thread (50/2 or 60/2) but you can use whatever you prefer.
Basting needle and ugly thread (a thread color you HATE with these fabrics). You will be thread-basting your wall quilt, not using glue or fusible. I use a size 9 milliner’s needle for my basting.
Thread snippers, fabric scissors

Thimble, if you prefer to use one for appliqué.

If you cannot see the pattern through your appliqué fabric using a light box, then bring (3) below. (1) Permanent , semi-permanent , or temporary marking pen that will show on the right side of your fabric.
(2) A light box and (1) above. If you do not have a light box, then bring (3) below.
(3) Pattern Transfer Paper*. Saral and Clover Chacopy are two other brands that will work just fine. Also bring
a colored-ink ballpoint pen (blue, red, or green) or a blunt pencil. I will bring a Saral product that is 24”x18” in
assorted colors, for sale during class.
*I will bring several of each of these notions for your purchase if you can’t find them elsewhere.

[email protected] Teacher will provide 6 different Hawaiian block patterns from which you will choose your
favorite one to work on in class (free). Come to class with the following supplies:
HAWAIIAN BLOCK: Bring two 24” square (approx.) pieces of solid-colored (or almost solid colored) 100% cotton fabric. (This is larger than a fat quarter.) This size will result in a Hawaiian block or small wall quilt. These fabrics do not have to be perfectly square, and they can be as large as 30” square. You may choose any two colors, but be sure they are strongly contrasting with each other.* You may use two contrasting shades of the same color, or two different colors, or one color with white or off-white. (Wash your fabrics so they are preshrunk and are colorfast.)
BINDING: If you intend to turn your block (above) into a finished quilt – buy an additional 1/3-yard of appliqué fabric for your binding. You need not bring this binding fabric to class.
Marking pencil/tool that will show up on the wrong side of the appliqué fabric you select above. It can be a permanent or semi-permanent or temporary marking tool. Don’t plan to use a ball-point pen for this supply.
For practicing the needle-turn techniques, please also bring two 12” square pieces of contrasting solid-colored 100% cotton fabric. These don’t have to be from the same fabrics as the two larger squares mentioned above, but they can be.

Thread to match the darker of your two 12” appliqué practice fabrics.
Contrasting thread. Bring thread in an UGLY contrast to the appliqué fabric that you chose for your Hawaiian appliqué (first in list above). This is the perfect excuse to use up some of those odd spools with very little thread left. Do not bring thread on old wooden spools (it is weak and may no longer be colorfast).
Milliners (formerly known as “Straw”) Needles, size 10 or 11** (any brand). This is a long thin needle that makes needle-turn easier. Find these and bring them. They are worth the effort.
Basting needle. Any needle can be a basting needle. I prefer a long sharp needle.
Good reading glasses, if you need them, to be able to see very close hand work.
Pen or pencil, note paper
Tracing paper (8-1/2” x 11”) (Any paper you can see through to trace off a pattern; nothing fancy is needed here. Even notebook paper is just fine for this step.).
Paper scissors.
Fabric scissors good enough to cut through 8 layers of fabric. Bring your 8” Gingher or other good shears if you own them.
Straight pins, at least 150. I prefer to use glass head silk pins (5mm) for pinning through eight layers of fabric, and Clover Appliqué pins for pining 2 layers together.
Thread snippers.
Masking tape (regular stuff, nothing fancy; and don’t go buy a new roll just for this class, we can share if you don’t already own some.)
