TRANSCRIPT

September 2008 Number 76

Welcome to September Mint Issue and the final release of our Great Australian Artist Series.

The previous Kangaroo designs from Rolf Harris and Reg Mombassa were certainly very popular with coin collectors throughout the world. The Kangaroo remains one of our most internationally recognised Australian icons, appearing on more coin designs than any of our other national symbols.

This fascination continues with the release of our 2009 Kangaroo coins, designed this year by Ken Done.

Ken Done is internationally recognised for his bold and colourful designs that have been exhibited all over the world. His designs have also been used in the fashion industry, adorned on motor vehicles and as part of the opening and closing ceremonies at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Ken Done has created the 2009 coins in his own popular style showcasing the distinctiveness of his artwork.

In this Mint Issue we also introduce two more one dollar coins in the pad printed Land Series. The Echidna and the Rock Wallaby follow the Koala and Wombat which were released in July.

Once again we feature the previously released $5 100th Anniversary of Sir Donald Bradman’s Birth Uncirculated Coin, the 50 cent Australia II 25th Anniversary coin and the $1 Uncirculated Mary MacKillop Coin.

I must draw your attention to the inside back page, where we have highlighted several products for which we have declared the final mintage. Remaining stocks of these products are in limited supply.

I urge our collectors not to pass up this opportunity of adding to or complementing your individual collections.

Happy collecting

Janine Murphy CEO, Royal Australian Mint

Dear Collector

Off the PressesThe Mint has been busy showcasing the latest coins to both Australian and international audiences. In July, Senator Nick Sherry joined our CEO Janine Murphy and coin designer Vladimir Gottwald to launch the Inspirational Australian Series; with the $1 Mary MacKillop coin. The Mint will also attend functions honouring the life of Sir Donald Bradman. Our attendance at this years American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money in Baltimore, was certainly a highlight. The

quality and innovation of the Royal Australian Mint products drew high praise from some of the most respected coin authorities.

From time to time the Royal Australian Mint releases coins and numismatic related products that have very limited mintages. In order that as many of our collectors as possible have the opportunity to purchase these products we allocate separate quantities to our dealers, mail, phone and internet customers.

2008 $1 Uncirculated Coin – EchidnaEchidnas look fearsome with their sharp spines that cover the back of their short stocky bodies but in fact they are a shy animal that curls up into a ball when frightened. Ants are one of their preferred foods and are featured in the sculptured background of this coin.

2008 $1 Uncirculated Coin – Rock WallabyThe rocky outcrops and cliff ledges are a feature of this coin design, as it is the perfect place to find this animal. Sometimes described as the bush acrobat, the rock wallaby is often seen leaping and bounding around some of the most rugged areas of Australia.

2008 $1 Uncirculated Coin – KoalaEasily one of Australia’s most recognised animals, this coin design portrays the koala in typical pose. Even though the koala is often referred to as a bear their closest relative is in fact the wombat. The design also features eucalypt leaves, their favourite food and their main source of fluids.

2008 $1 Uncirculated Coin – WombatWombats are stout sturdy animals with stubby powerful legs making them ideal diggers and earning them the nickname of the bulldozer of the bush. As the coin design indicates they make their homes in hollowed out logs leading into intricate underground tunnel systems.

2008 50 cent Uncirculated CoinWho would have ever imagined that in September 1983 Australia II bearing the sail number KA6, featuring Ben Lexen’s innovative but contentious winged keel, could sail its way into world sporting history and the hearts of our entire nation.

To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of winning the America’s Cup which was then the most unobtainable piece of sporting silverware in history, our inspired coin designers and sculptors have captured Australia II under full sail. The 50 cent uncirculated coin design shows the starboard side of the vessel with spinnaker and mainsail carrying the boat to victory. A unique magnified underwater view captures the controversial winged keel as taken from technical drawings.

But a very exciting feature that makes this a truly remarkable collector item is the packaging. The blister card transforms into your very own winged keel. This will perfectly display the 50 cent and keep it shipshape for many years to come.

CENTENARY OF AUSTRALIAN QUARANTINE 2008 marks 100 years since the introduction of the Quarantine Act 1908.This Act provided the legislative basis for human, plant and animal quarantine activities in Australia, and meant so much to our primary industries and economy because of the protection it gave to our livelihoods from exotic pests and diseases.

This symbolic $1 uncirculated coin acknowledges the extraordinary work and commitment of the thousands of staff who inspect and clear millions of passenger items, ships, mail items, cargo containers, plants, animals and live imports and exports each year.

The coin design features a luggage bag shaped as Australia, with stickers representing the key hazards and protection issues. Also featured on the coin and the packaging, is an Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service detector dog. These Beagles are selected because of their friendly nature and their extraordinary sense of smell.

2008 $1 Uncirculated Mary MacKillop Coin Inspirational Australians – EducationAustralia is truly blessed with a diverse group of people that have inspired our nation and so we introduce the Inspirational Australians $1 coin series.

The first coin recognises Mary MacKillop, a staunch and often rebellious champion of Christianity with a determination to provide education in Australia.

Mary MacKillop dedicated her life to the Sisters of St Joseph, the first religious order to be founded by an Australian. Despite a vow of poverty and dependence on Divinity, Mary managed to make available, education to the poor and the marginalised people of country Australia. She would often follow farmers, railway workers and miners into isolated areas and endure the same hardships whilst educating their children. By 1877, over forty schools were in operation in South Australia, Queensland and New South Wales. Today there are MacKillop schools in almost all states of Australia.

The $1 uncirculated coin features an image of Mary MacKillop with a guiding hand on the future generation. A matt finish creates a special aura allowing the design to be highly visible, certainly a worthy coin with which to launch this inspirational series.

2008 $5 Silver Proof Coin

30 Years of Northern Territory GovernmentThe fifth release in this series recognises 30 years of self-government in the Northern Territory with an equally stunning $5 silver proof coin.

The Northern Territory took shape slowly as an independent territory. South Australia took over responsibility for it in 1863, but relinquished the territory to the federal government in 1911. The Territory was then governed by Commonwealth administrators, until 1974 when a Northern Territory elected Legislative Assembly was created. Full internal self-government under a unicameral system followed in 1978.

If you have collected all the State Series coins so far, then this new addition will be another star in a fine collection and yours to own today!

Continuing the Tree of Memories series, we release the 2008 Christmas Medallion. This series encompasses strong and familiar scenes associated with Christmas. A feature of this medallion is the laser frosting on the cloaks of the three kings. We have combined laser precision with traditional sculpting techniques which culminates in a finish that would delight even Ebenezer Scrooge.

The 2008 design is created by well known coin designer Peter Soobik. Coin collectors will remember Peter for many of his past coin designs featured in earlier Mint Issues.

The 24ct gold plated medallion is 40 mm in diameter and is encased in a bezel, making it a premier Christmas decoration for December. The medallion comes flat packed in the form of a gift card in which you can write a personalised message and then send to loved ones anywhere.

With only 116 days until Christmas, now is the time to start your Christmas shopping.

Fine Silver ProoF

2008 YeAr SeTWith its bright colour and workable properties silver, like gold has always been a popular widely used metal and source of value. Egyptians wore silver as ornamentation as far back as 2,000 BC. The Greeks made their Drachmas out of silver which became an accepted form of trade.

The 2008 Fine Silver Year Set certainly deserves its place among the best silver proof sets we have produced.

Coin designer Vladimir Gottwald and the extraordinary Mint production team have again combined precision and their meticulous commitment to craftsmanship, to produce a silver proof coin set of unsurpassed quality.

This set represents the only way of securing both the themed $1 and the 20 cent piece, in one complete six coin year set. Both coin designs capture powerful images as a reminder of this nation’s environmental fragility.

On 7th May 1908, King Edward VII granted a Coat of Arms to the Commonwealth of Australia. The Mint has marked this 100 year anniversary with a $1 Fine Silver Proof coin. Including a subtle variation and for the very first time on a silver proof coin, a ‘C’ mintmark denoting Canberra as its minting location.

An uncirculated $1 ‘C’ mintmark is also now available, these two coins are the only true mintmark coins produced by the Royal Australian Mint in 2008.*

The 2008 coin design from Australia’s National Mint has an element of Australia’s original Coat of Arms. Depicting the kangaroo and emu, supporting a shield displaying the cross of St George, standing on a grassy mound, this original Coat of Arms was used until 1912.

The $1 fine silver coin is a recommended addition to any Australian themed coin collection, especially if you already own the One Florin coin from the 1998 Masterpieces in Silver set.
