seminary years, we used to

play “basketbox” as a way

to release tension. It was

just like basketball but

without any rules. The goal

was to put the ball in the

basket regardless of how you made it in. Obviously it was a very

violent game and we usually ended up with black eyes, bruises and

very sore, yet more relaxed. On one occasion I made a group of

teenagers to play this game without going to such extreme. They

complained that their parents, teachers and all adults in general,

imposed too many rules. During the game, they started complaining

that fouls were not being called and certain shots shouldn’t count

because it was “cheating”, etc. When things got hot I suspended the

game, then we talked about the game and reached the conclusion that

rules were necessary to play well.

Laws and regulations have been made to benefit the

peaceful coexistence among people, but until we understand the spirit

of the law, we will feel as slaves under the law. Why drive at 65 miles

per hour if I can control the car going over 85 miles per hour? Why

should I stop at the stop sign if no one else is around? Why should I

pay taxes? Why should I wash my hands before eating? Etc. When you

realize that the laws are not made to limit you, but to respect the

rights and welfare of all, then you are no longer a slave, but free.

Of course, there are laws we shouldn't obey because they

are unfair, discriminatory or detriment of some. Remember the racist

laws which Martin Luther King fought against, or unjust laws imposed

on settlers, leading to civil disobedience which resulted in the

Independence of the United States.

There are very clever lawyers who know how to apply the

law in their favor, achieving a corrupt and dirty, but legal purpose.

This is the attitude that Jesus condemns in the scriptures when

Pharisees are set in the absurd law enforcement, but do not fulfill the

spirit of love and charity for which they were given by God to Moses

as a gift to live in harmony and in peace. As Santiago expressed in the

second reading: “Pure and undefiled religion before God is to serve the orphans and widows in their need.”

Jesus frees us from the law by give us a new commandment

that encompasses all previous laws and surpasses: Love one another

as He has loved us. As easy and simple as that. He who loves, cannot

sin, because sin is the lack of love. St. Augustine expresses this in

these words: “Love and do what you want”.

When you love, it is not hard to obey; when you love, you

understand that you must think of your neighbor; when you love your

country, you understand why you must fulfill your obligations as

citizen; When you love God, you understand that every law is

surmounted by love. Love God through your neighbor and in yourself.

Durante mis años de

Seminario, a manera de relajar

tensiones, acostumbrábamos a

jugar lo que llamábamos

¨Básquet Box¨. Era el juego de

Basquetbol, pero sin ninguna

regla. La finalidad era meter el

balón en la canasta sin importar como se lograra. Por supuesto que era

un juego muy violento y normalmente terminábamos con ojos morados,

raspones y muy adoloridos, pero más relajados. Sin llegar a esos extre-

mos, en alguna ocasión puse a jugar Basquetbol sin reglas a un grupo de

adolescentes que se quejaba de tantas reglas que les imponían sus pa-

dres, maestros y todos los adultos en general. Durante el juego, empe-

zaron las quejas de que no se marcaban los fauls, ni las violas y que ese

tiro no valía porque era trampa, etc. Cuando las cosas se ponían canden-

tes, suspendí el partido y nos pusimos a platicar sobre el juego y llega-

ron a la conclusión de que eran necesarias las reglas para poder jugar

bien.

Las leyes y reglamentos se han hecho para beneficiar la convi-

vencia pacífica entre las personas, pero mientras no comprendamos el

espíritu de la ley, nos sentiremos sometidos o esclavos de la ley. ¿Por

qué manejar a 65 millas por hora si yo puedo tener el control del auto a

más de 85 millas por hora? ¿Por qué debo detenerme ante la señal de

Alto si no hay nadie? ¿Por qué debo pagar impuestos? ¿Por qué debo

lavarme las manos antes de comer? Etc. Cuando comprendes que las

leyes no se hicieron para limitarte, sino para respetar los derechos y el

bienestar de todos, entonces ya no eres esclavo, sino libre.

Por supuesto, hay leyes que no hay que obedecer porque son

injustas, discriminatorias o en perjuicio de algunos. Recordemos las

leyes racistas contra las cuales luchó Martin Luther King, o las leyes

injustas impuestas a los colonos, lo cual llevó a la desobediencia civil

que dio principio a la Independencia de los Estados Unidos.

Hay abogados muy astutos que conocen bien la ley para apli-

carlas a su favor logrando un fin corrupto y sucio pero legal. Esta es la

actitud que Jesús condena en los Escribas y Fariseos que se fijan en el

cumplimiento absurdo de las leyes, pero no cumplen el espíritu de amor

y caridad para lo cual fueron dadas por Dios a Moisés como un regalo

para vivir en la armonía y en la paz. Como lo expresa Santiago en la

segunda lectura: ¨La religión pura e intachable ante Dios, es atender al huérfano y a la viuda en su necesidad¨. Jesús nos libera de la ley al darnos un mandamiento nuevo

que abarca todas las leyes anteriores y las supera: Amarnos los unos a

los otros como El nos ha amado. Tan fácil y simple como esto. El que

ama, no puede pecar, porque el pecado es la ausencia del amor. San

Agustín lo expresa con estas palabras: ¨Ama y haz lo que quieras¨.

Cuando amas, no te es difícil obedecer, cuando amas, entien-

des que debes de pensar en tu prójimo; cuando amas a tu Patria, entien-

des por qué debes de cumplir tus obligaciones ciudadanas. Cuando amas

a Dios, entiendes que toda ley es superada por el amor. Amor a Dios en

tu prójimo y amor a Dios en ti mismo.

Praying for creation

THE NATIONAL COLLECTION FOR THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA. The Catholic University of America is the national uni-versity of the Catholic Church in the United States, located in Washington, D.C. More than 4000 students directly receive scholarship aid from this Collection, including many from our diocese. This week is the National Collection for The Catholic University of America. Let us give her a Birthday present praying the Rosary as a family of doing a special prayer together. LACOLECTA NACIONAL PARA LA UNIVERSIDAD CA-TOLICA DE AMERICA. La Universidad Católica de América, ubicada en Wa-shington, D.C., es la universidad nacional de la Iglesia Católica de los Estados Unidos. SEGUNDA COLECTA LA PROXIMA SEMANA: SOLICITUD MINISTERIAL DEL OBISPO.- Estamos muy lejos de alcanzar la cuota que se nos pide para ayudar a los gastos de los diferentes ministerios de la Diócesis. Necesitamos $5,500.00 para alcanzar la meta.

MISA DE ANIVERSARIO DEL PADRE ANDY.- Recordando con cariño al Padre ANDREW C. DACHAUER, S.J. en su tercer aniversario de fallecido, tendremos la Misa Solemne en su honor el Miércoles 12 de Septiembre a las 6 p.m. en la Parroquia de San José. No habrá Misa en la Mañana.

GRITO DE INDEPENDENCIA.- El 15 de Septiembre celebramos la Independencia de México y los países Centro Americanos. Ese día, la Misa de las 6 p.m. será Bilingüe con la intención de dar gracias a Dios por el don de la Libertad y rezar por nuestro País de Origen. Después de la Misa tendremos la fiesta del Grito y compartiremos nuestra música, alegría y comida.

NEXT WEEK SECOND COLLECTION: BISHOP´S MINISTRY APPEAL.- We are too far to reach the goal to help with the expenses for the various ministries of the Diocese. We need $5,500.00 to reach the goal. Please help us to help. Be generous on the second collection and give as much as you can. Give to the Church some of what God has give you. MEMMORIAL MASS FOR FR. The 6 p.m. Mass on that day will be Bilingual with the intention of give thanks to God for the gift of Freedom and to pray for every nation that we are coming from. After the Mass a multicultural festivity will take place at the parking lot with the opportunity of sharing our traditions, culture, music, dances and food. Come and share.

INCARDINATION.- Dear Father Roman: Thank you again for the most gracious welcome when I came for your Installation as Pastor and Confirmation, and in particular, for the very generous gift which will be used for charitable purposes in the Diocese. inform you that you will be incardinated into the Diocese of Stockton as of Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at 12:00 noon. I congratulate you on joining the Presbyterate of our Diocese and I look forward to the years ahead of your priestly ministry in the Diocese of Stockton.
