Call to Order – Co-‐Chair Gregg Davidson called the meeting to order. 2. Approval of Minutes – May 18, 2016 -‐ It was Moved by Jim Potts and Seconded by Don Senek that the minutes of the meeting held May 18, 2016 be approved. CARRIED
3. Business Arising from Minutes I. International Plowing Match –
I. Christine was just finalizing volunteers for the week – Barb Evoy mentioned she may be interested
II. Safe Communities WC set up the booth at the IPM the day before – All of the marketing materials, banner and table wrap look great. Shaping up to be a great event
III. Sandy Parkinson suggested we give out the Suicide Awareness Bulbs at the IPM
II. Safe Communities Day I. Safe Communities Day is on track. All of the schools have been contacted.
Confirmations are trickling in slowly – Phone calls going out this week. II. Bussing company’s have been contacted – Waiting to figure out how many schools
will be participating. III. Falls Prevention Station requires 2 benches IV. Benches for all vendors that are inside the venue V. Intentional Self Harm PAG wants a more quiet area
III. Wellington County Crossing Walk Legislation
I. Gregg Davidson announced that all of the letters regarding the new Cross Walk Legislation have been sent to all of the Mayor’s in each Township in Wellington County – We are waiting to hear back from Mapleton Township Mayor, Neil Driscoll
II. What kind of markings? Will they be exclusive to School Crossings? Can the information be sent to Puslinch?
III. Safe Communities WC will be presenting to council once we have all of the necessary information and everyone within Wellington County is able to attend. Once the date has been chosen, we will inform everyone.
IV. New Minto Roundabout has the proposed markings. V. Are pedestrian car collisions within a crosswalk a concern within Wellington County? VI. Does Public Health have these statistics? VII. Regardless, this is a necessary action to prevent increased injuries at cross walks.
5. Reports
• Falls PAG i. Brad introduced Doreen Cook, a member of the Falls PAG ii. Falls Prevention Month is November iii. www.fallpreventionmonth.ca iv. “Takes a community to prevent a fall” We all have a role to play v. Great Social Media Guide #PreventFalls2016 @fallpreventON vi. VON SMART Program is working with Wightman to produce a video to get
information out about exercise, diet, etc. that all contribute to Falls vii. Looking for a group of older adults to be in the video – Ask Brad or Doreen for
details viii. Updated version of Screening Tool Checklist with Safe Communities Wellington
County Logo on it. ix. Next meeting in November, the PAG will be talking about strategies for 2017
• Motor Vehicle PAG
i. Don spoke about the Minto and Wellington North video contest for Norwell and Wellington Heights
ii. Gregg suggested getting Gabriella from the Wellington North Youth Action Committee involved
iii. Resource officers have their roles. They may be able to assist, but a discussion will need to take place.
iv. Don requested $1000 from the MVC PAG for the Wellington North Video Contest
v. MVC will not have a booth at Safe Communities Day vi. Will be holding another Bike Rodeo in the Spring during school
o Glenna mentioned that the advantage of having it on a Saturday the kids are able to bring their own bikes
o How do we get the word out? Barb mentioned PSA’s and Interviews on The Grand 101.1 and on The River.
• Intentional Self Harm PAG
i. Mary Mentioned that the magnets are great – Every Grade 6 student will receive a magnet during Safe Communities Day. o Distribute the magnets to the COPS Committees following Safe
Communities Day ii. The Buddy Bench will be a focus during the Safe Communities Day
presentation – encouraging kindness and empathy. iii. Buddy Bench is struggling in the schools – K – 3 – Great; 4 – 8 – Stigma
already attached to it. “Only losers sit on the bench”. iv. GLOW Group will be at Safe Communities Day v. Sandy mentioned Suicide Awareness Council gave our tulip bulbs of Hope
for World Suicide Awareness Prevention Day – Still have a few hundred left -‐ Could we distribute them at the International Plowing Match?
vi. Place a sticker on the package with Safe Communities Wellington County logo and information along with Suicide Awareness Council that is already on bag. o Maybe attach a brochure with more information – What kind of
budget do we have? vii. Safe Talk was cancelled in May – Early November will be another
Workshop at the Fergus Library
viii. Mary mentioned an event through the Guelph Wellington Guelph Strategy on September 28 – Anti Stigma – 12 – 1
6. New Business i Thoughts from the floor
a. Brad de St. Aubyn offered public health to do a presentation on Canabis, similar in nature to the Mental Health presentation SCWC just had.
b. Public Health has Plasma car kits – Does Safe Communities want them? Yes
c. Christine and Gregg mentioned the Vision Zero Summit about potentially attending to receive more information about making our roads safer and attain specific information on finding out how others are implementing the new Cross Walk legislation – Great Networking event, but there is a cost of $250/each for the summit.
d. Don Senek made a motion for Safe Communities WC to send and pay for 1 individual, namely, the Program Coordinator to attend the summit.
e. Brad de St. Aubyn made a motion to send both the Program Coordinator and the Motor Vehicle Collision PAG Chair to the Vision Zero Summit SECONDED: Barb Evoy CARRIED
f. Glenna inquired What age can doctors stop telling parents medical information at the request of the youth?
g. Blaine – The youth has to understand consequences and demonstrate the knowledge
h. No program to support 18 + i. Blaine – Social Services has 16 year olds that work as an adult. j. Barb to call 211 to find out more information
ii National Teen Driver Safety Week
• Currently setting things up. We will be talking to the high school principal’s and School Resource Officers to implement at “Positive Ticketing Blitz” at each County High School.
• We are going to send out a press release and PSA’s local radio stations
• Officers will be outside handing out “Positive Tickets” to students driving and Christine will be inside collecting tickets and reinforcing the messages.
5. Community Groups –
i. Puslinch COPS (Doug Smith) a. September 28 – Correctional Services Officer speaking at COPs
meeting ii. Guelph/Eramosa Safe Communities
a. Motorcycle Awareness Day was good for a first time event b. Golden helmets attended. They day focused on education
surrounding bike safety c. Snow Angels is starting up for the 2016/2017 season and looking to
expand. Looking into engaging High School students d. Mary Lloyd inquired whether there is training involved and whether
they provide vests, toque’s, gloves?
iii. Christine Veit – Program Coordinator a. Already reported in New and Business Arising from Minutes
6. Adjournment The group was adjourned at 12:00 PM. The Next Leadership Table meeting is scheduled for November 16, 2016 at 8 a.m. (Priority Advisory Groups) and 9:30 a.m. (Leadership Table) at the Wellington County Museum & Archives.
