To Our Guests:Visiting a church can be an intimidating experience. We are glad that you are here, and we hope to remove as much of that awkwardness as we can from your visit to Cityview.
Our worship service usually lasts about 90 minutes. This worship guide will help you navigate the service. There are short paragraphs on the next page to explain each part of the service.
The service is designed to be accessible to you, whether you’ve spent years in the church or you’ve never been to a church service in your life. During the service, we will try to help you understand how the message of Jesus can apply to your life today.
If you are new to Cityview or just visiting, we would love to know that you were here. The Connection Cards, which can be found in this bulletin, are a place for you to let us know whatever information you might want us to know, and to request any information from us that you might need. You may put this in the offering when it is passed at the end of the service. Pastor Dan Adamson ([email protected]) is always enthusiastic to meet you in person, as well.
For Children:Children of all ages are welcome in the worship service.
Nursery is provided during the service for children 3 years of age and younger.
Children ages four through 5th grade are given the choice of attending Sunday school classes beginning during the greeting portion of the service.
If you have any questions about children’s ministry at Cityivew, please contact Children’s Ministry Coordinator Lynda Adamson ([email protected]).
Community Life:After the ServiceEach week, we linger for fellowship with one another. Please join us for refreshments in the cafeteria.
Community GroupsCommunity Groups are the primary way to get to know people at Cityview. At a Community Group, you will be invited to deepen your spiritual involvement with others. You will find a weekly opportunity to study the scripture passage for the upcoming week’s sermon and pray together.

The LiturgyPreparing in StillnessWe often come into worship tired, overwhelmed and distracted. If we are honest we are not prepared to worship God. Each week, we take a few moments to quiet our hearts to prepare to meet God in worship. Please take this time to read the reflections, look over the rest of the service or pray as we anticipate being called into worship.
Call to WorshipWe need to be “called” to come and worship God because we default to thinking the world revolves around our needs and agendas- and also because we struggle to believe that God truly wants us to draw near to him. The call to worship focuses our attention on God and prepares us to meet him.
Confession of SinBecause sin is so pervasive in both our individual and corporate lives, we are called to come before God with honesty and transparency, confessing our failures and brokenness and asking for both healing and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. We confess corporately to show our unity even in our brokenness.
Assurance of GraceChrist has given the Church authority to declare forgiveness of sins in his name. Because of this, when the liturgist proclaims that your sins are forgiven, you can know that Christ agrees.
The SermonSome view the sermon as a way to get principles for “right” living. In reality, as we open the Scripture we corporately encounter Christ. Therefore, as you listen, pray to be open to the Spirit’s leading, exhortation, encouragement, and healing.
CommunionCommunion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal for Christians. We welcome all Christians - those who look to Christ alone for salvation, who are in good standing with his church, and who seek strength to live more faithfully to their Savior - to join in this sacrament.
Worship Through GivingBecause money is so powerfully tied to our hearts, this is a valuable expression of worship as we acknowledge that everything we have comes from God and belongs to him. If you are visiting with us, we are glad you are here- please do not feel obligated to give.
The BenedictionGod always gets the last word in our encounter of worship. For Christians, it is always a word of blessing and sending to live our lives in the light of the reality of the Gospel of Christ.

ORDER OF WORSHIPIn an individualistic culture, the liturgy helps us live a communal life. In a culture that values spontaneity, the liturgy grounds us in something enduring. In a culture that assumes that truth is a product of the mind, the liturgy helps us experience truth in both mind and body. In a world demanding instant relevance, the liturgy gives us the patience to live into a relevance that the world does not know. Its counter-intuitive nature makes the liturgy appear culturally strange at first, but in fact it’s more like an intriguing story, full of mystery, that not only attracts but reshapes our perceptions and our lives. - Mark GalliLiturgies, whether “sacred” or “secular” shape and constitute our identities by forming our most fundamental desires and our most basic attunement to the world. In short, liturgies make us certain kinds of people, and what defines us is what we love…our identity is shaped by ultimately love or what we love as ultimate—what, at the end of day, gives us a sense of meaning, purpose, understanding, and orientation to our being in the world. - James K. A. SmithThe liturgy is a meeting between God and God’s people, a meeting in which both parties act, but in which God initiates and we respond. - Nicholas Wolterstorff
Question for Reflection and DiscussionRelated to the Smith quote above—what at the end of the day gives you a sense of meaning, purpose, understanding and orientation to your being in the world?
Call to Worship — Psalm 117Praise the LORD all nations! Extol him, all peoples! For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever.
Praise the LORD!
Prayer of Invocation — based on John 4:13-14; 7:37-38All-knowing and all-caring God, we gather this day drained by another week. We are like a parched desert, empty and in need of replenishment. Visit us with your presence, saturate us with your Spirit, and bathe us in your streams of living water, that our lives might acknowledge and worship you to the praise and honor of Jesus Christ.
Amen!

Call to Confession — From Isaiah 55:1 All who thirst, come to the water and drink deeply of these living streams. Come, all who are weary; come, all who yearn for forgiveness. Our gracious God beckons and blesses us.
Prayer of ConfessionMost gracious and most merciful God, we confess to you and to one another, that time after time we have entered your presence with countless prayers but with hearts that have been closed to your grace. We have lifted our hands to you in praise, but our feet have still walked in the ways of evil. We have rehearsed your commandments, but have refused to see your face in the needs of our neighbor. We pray, Lord, that you forgive our lack of faith and pardon our acts of injustice.
Grant us the healing that comes from your presence, and the cleansing of your all-powerful Word, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Hymn of Assurance Gloria Patri
Silent ConfessionAssurance of Grace — Psalm 145:13-14
The LORD is faithful in all his words, and gracious in all his deeds. The LORD upholds all who are falling, and raises up all who are bowed down.
Thanks be to God!Brothers and Sisters, you have heard God’s holy demands and have confessed your sins to him. Do you believe that Jesus Christ, by his perfect life, sacrificial death, and glorious resurrection has atoned for your sins and satisfied the wrath of God for you?
We do.
The Lord’s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Hymn of Illumination Lord, I Believe
God Speaks To Us
Sermon Text — Proverbs 9:1-6, 10-181 Wisdom has built her house; she has hewn her seven pillars. 2 She has slaughtered her beasts; she has mixed her wine; she has also set her table. 3 She has sent out her young women to call from the highest places in the town, 4 “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” To him who lacks sense she says, 5 “Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. 6 Leave your simple ways, and live, and walk in the way of insight.” 10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. 11 For by me your days will be multiplied, and years will be added to your life. 12 If you are wise, you are wise for yourself; if you scoff, you alone will bear it. 13 The woman Folly is loud; she is seductive and knows nothing. 14 She sits at the door of her house; she takes a seat on the highest places of the town, 15 calling to those who pass by, who are going straight on their way, 16 “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” And to him who lacks sense she says, 17 “Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.” 18 But he does not know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

Prayer of Thanksgiving and ConsecrationThe Lord be with you.
And also with you.Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give him thanks and praise.
God Strengthens Us
Profession of Faith — Adapted from Martin Luther’s Short Catechism, 1529Christian, what do you believe?
I believe that God has created me and all that exists, that he has given, and still preserves to me, body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my limbs, my reason and all my senses; and also clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, family, all provision and all my possessions; that he provides me richly and daily with all the necessaries of life, protects me from all danger, and preserves and guards me against all evil; and all this out of pure paternal, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness of mine; all for which I am in duty bound to thank, praise, serve, and obey him. This is most certainly true.

Doxology
Worship Through Giving
Prayer for those searching for truthLord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. As I consider the reasons for doing so, grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.
Prayer of belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.
Prayer for those struggling with sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and faithfully follow you in life. Amen.
Prayer of commitmentLord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.
Prayers for Reflection

BenedictionMay our Lord Jesus Christ, the One who came with grace and truth, also fill your hearts with grace and truth, as you serve him in the days ahead. And may the joy of the Lord—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—be your strength.
SendingLet us go forth to serve the world as those who love our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Thanks be to God!
PostludeThere are women and men available to pray for your needs after the service in the front of the hall near the communion table.

SERVING THIS WEEK
SERVING NEXT WEEK
*In addition to congregational giving, we receive fundraising support from other churches and individuals to help cover operating costs.
GATHERINGS & ANNOUNCEMENTSEVENING PRAYER Each week a group meets at the Adamson home (1812 S Dearborn Unit 8) from 6-7pm on Sundays to pray for one another, the church, the city and the world. Contact Dan for more information.
HOST A SUNDAY LUNCH! Help us welcome those who are newer to Cityview by hosting a Sunday Lunch. It’s a simple commitment- just pick a nearby location and eat lunch with some other folks on a Sunday after church. We still need a few hosts for the next few months. Please contact Dan Adamson or Carolyn Koonce if you would be willing to serve in this way.
AFTER-CHURCH POTLUCK TODAY Join us immediately following the service for a potluck and congregational meeting to hear about the upcoming fall events at Cityview. Please bring a dish to share.
LAWNDALE 5K WALK/RUN SATURDAY, SEPT 20 Join others from Cityview to run the Lawndale 5K to benefit the Lawndale Christian Health Center. More information can be found at www.lawndale5k.org.
SUNDAY MORNING APOLOGETICS CLASS SEPT 21 - OCT 19 / 9-9:50 A.M. AT MERIT Join us for an introduction to the theological discipline of apologetics. We will examine the intellectual or rational acceptability of Christian belief. To this end, we will seek to understand and refute common objections to the Christian worldview (the problem of evil, the new atheist movement, religious pluralism, etc.) In addition, we will study classic arguments for the belief in the Christian God and consider the role of apologetics for missions and evangelism. For more information contact Craig Hefner at [email protected].
