9/11 – A Time to Remember (words adapted from the Community Prayer

Service – Clarkston 2002 on the 1-year anniversary of 9/11)

The events of September 11, 2001 have left an impression on every person in the United States. Wherever we may live, the altered image of the Manhattan skyline is still disorienting. For generations to come the lives of those who have had no direct recollection of that day, will be shaped by polices and procedures instituted because of the tragedies of 9/11. Our perspectives, values and faith are also being forged in and through these events. While many have vowed to, “Never forget,” others wonder, “Who could ever forget?” On this day, we still grieve the loss of loved ones, and those whose names we may never know. We honor and thank those who have served and given so selflessly in the aftermath of this tragedy. We all struggle to find hope and peace, and we must pray for reconciliation even with the ones whom it would be all too easy to despise. Today we look to God, not so much for answers, as for faith and comfort in the midst of disquieting realities, courage to continue to live righteously and lovingly and peacefully in these unsettling times, and the assurance that we, by God’s grace alone, are ultimately safe and secure in our Lord’s arms. We gather to pray, sing, worship, share, play and break bread together today, ten years after the tragic events of September 11, as an act of bold faith and trust that the God who can bring life out of death will continue to offer us hope and goodness and a future through Jesus Christ. May you be "blessed to be a blessing" this Rally Sunday!

Kids Against Hunger & Alexander Zonjic & Friends 

Join in to pack 50,000 meals to feed folks locally and around the world. Clarkston Campus Saturday, September 24 (time to be announced). Ages 4 and up can be a part of this wonderful event. Childcare will be available for those under 4. On Sunday a benefit to raise money for Kids Against Hunger. Featuring Alexander Zonjic, Detroit Icon Flautist. Clarkston Campus Sunday, September 25 at 6:00 pm.

Women’s Retreat September 30-October 2 at Camp Michi-Lu-Ca. Cost is $75 and includes meals and lodging. This lightly structured retreat is for women who want to just get away, meet some new friends and have time of their own. Bring your favorite books or crafts and find a copy in the woods of your very own. To register send your payment to Living Water Ministries: 7898 W.  2011 CPR/AED Training   

We especially need to train people from all 3 worship times for Clarkston campus, plus for our White Lake campus, as we hope to have an AED on site at both locations in the near future. We will offer two training opportunities this fall:

September 15, 2011 (Thursday) 9AM-12Noon @ Clarkston campus or

October 1, 2011 (Saturday) 9AM- 12Noon, (also at Clarkston campus.)

Meet Pastor Terri L. Engel Peterson at our Clarkston Campus next week 

My family joined Calvary when I was about 11 years old. My first memory of the church after that was joining the choir. Yvonne Lowe was the choir director. We would come to the church after school, have a snack and practice songs to sing in worship. Calvary was very generous to me and my family throughout my school years especially when my Dad was ill. One year a woman from the community called Pr. Bob Walters and asked if she could help a family with Christmas. He contacted my mom for permission and we were blessed with clothing, toys and food that year. I was able to go to leadership camp because of camperships provided by the congregation. These experiences helped form me in my call to ministry. I preached my first sermon at camp at the request of Judy Mercier, the youth leader, and my first sermon in the church at the age of 14. It amazes me how supportive Pr. Bob and the congregation were of my call to ministry. The congregation encouraged me and helped me financially with seminary also. I participated in the youth group and became a student leader. I graduated from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia, SC in 1997 and received my first call in 1998 near Dayton, OH. I met my husband, Brian, at seminary and we were married here at Calvary in 1995. He is ordained and is currently called at Trinity School at Greenlawn as a teacher of Old Testament, New Testament and Church Doctrine. I am serving Christ the King Lutheran Church, South Bend, IN. We have three children, Rachael (age 13, almost 14), Keegan (age 7, almost 8) and Liam (6). I thank God for my Calvary family and the blessings we received throughout our time here.

Outreach 

Sunday Mornings At Calvary Sundays are busy at Calvary! Your are needed to help it all run smoothly. Every Sunday, 40-45 volunteers assist with Sunday morning worship, providing hospitality (greeting, welcoming, coffee service, bookstore, ushering) and in word and sacrament. The blessing in serving is in getting to know one another, sharing smiles and God's love. See the back of welcome insert for specific info, or contact Gayle Buschur, staff.

 2011/12 WELCA Bible Study 

To Follow and To Serve: The Gospel of Mark 

This year the WELCA (Women of the ELCA) Bible Study will explore the gospel of Mark. The 9 monthly studies will focus on the gospel writer’s invitation to discipleship in the 21st century. What does it really mean to follow Jesus today? The editor of the WELCA magazine which contains the monthly studies says: “I think you’ll find this a terrific study – Mark is full of amazing stories. The writer of the Bible study, Pastor Patricia Lull does an excellent job of bringing readers into the action. Her interest in this gospel began in childhood when she heard these stories and started to imagine life in that Biblical world.” Sounds like fun and a great way to learn about our Biblical heritage, The WELCA Bible studies are held at h once a month, September – May on the our Clarkston Campus 2nd Monday of each month. This year we begin on September 12 at 7:00 pm. Study guides will be available at the Welcome Center on Sunday, September 11, the night of the first session. I look forward to welcoming back those who have been a part WELCA studies in the past and I hope to see many new faces as well. All are welcome. Job Opening for Custodian – Calvary Lutheran White Lake Campus 

General qualifications include, but are not limited to: Strong focus on Christian faith and

Discipleship. Supports Calvary’s mission, vision, and

Bag of Tricks Training For Youth & Children’s Ministry Leaders, but all ministry leaders are welcome. Saturday, October 8 from 9am-3pm at the Clarkston Campus We will partner with other churches in our Synod for this training. While there is a fee for leaders from other churches, we are able to offer it at no cost for our own leaders. At this training we will take a look at the “Bag of Tricks” and see what it has to offer any leader who would like to incorporate engaging games and group building activities into their program. Come prepared to learn about how to lead games and activities with students, how to effectively debrief an activity and how to incorporate a spiritual component into games and challenges you lead. Youth & Children 

Program Registration has Begun Okay, this is for the High Schoolers that asked about dance lessons. Clarkston Community Ed is offering ballroom dancing this fall. 8 week course is $59. They also have a separate Latin/Salsa class. For more information go to www.clarkston.k12.mi.us/cec. Staff Contact: Deborah Robitaille. If there is enough interest, maybe we can organize a Calvary group to register?

Youth Ministry As we plan for Fall, the youth ministry team finds a need for: • Small group leaders for Confirmation. • Hey High Schoolers and College Students • Would love to have one or two high schoolers to

assist the Sunday Morning leadership team at the High School Coffee Hour. You would be responsible to show up a few minutes early, maybe put the DVD in and help the leader during the class. Perfect for 11th or 12th graders, college students or those that have been through leadership training.

 Photo Releases 

Parents, please review your child’s registration cards before you sign them. There is a photo release paragraph there that gives us permission to take your child’s picture during all Calvary groups and events to publish in our publications and on our websites including Facebook. If you do NOT want your child’s picture on any publications, be sure to cross this paragraph out and contact the church office with your preferences. Be assured that we use these photo’s responsibly.  Mid Week Volunteers We need volunteers to organize supplies and bins for our Sunday morning leaders. All you do is show up on Wednesday morning around 9 AM, prep for an hour and a half and you’re done! The best part is you can bring your children that aren’t in school or be done by the time preschoolers or kindergartners get home. How can you beat that! Contact Terri for more details.  White Lake Children Need Leaders 

From 9am-10:45 am. Maybe you’re looking for a new mission field to share your time and talents. White Lake is in great need of a veteran volunteer to take eight months leave from Clarkston to lead kids in White Lake. Starting this September, with training and support, we need one or more volunteers to commit their Sundays to our White Lake kids. Don’t let Satan weasel into your mind and tell you it’s not possible. Take the challenge and trust God in all the details. Talk to Terri real soon.

Super Start Can & Bottle Drive Calvary’s Super Start Preteens will be collecting cans & bottles to benefit Kids Against Hunger. They would love your help by bringing in returnables to the box located in the Welcome Center. All donations will be taken through September. Mandatory Leadership Orientation for
