Lutheran Disaster Response Nepal Area Earthquake

Devastating images and stories are coming out of Nepal following a 7.8 magnitude earthquake on April 25. Sections of Kathmandu, the nation’s capital, and surrounding areas lie in rubble. More than 3,500 people have lost their lives, and the number continues to rise as officials make their way through rural communities. Historic buildings and houses have been leveled; roads are destroyed. The need for food, water, medical care, blankets and shelter is great.

Lutheran Disaster Response is already actively networking with partners such as The Lutheran World Federation (LWF), Lutheran World Relief, and the ACT Alliance who are already on the ground. LWF’s office in Kathmandu escaped the worst of the impact of the quake and has already launched a large-scale emergency response. Your gifts are needed now. Every gift designated to the “Nepal Area Earthquake” through Lutheran Disaster Response will be used entirely – 100 percent – to help those impacted by the quake rebuild their lives and livelihoods.

If you would like to make a donation checks should be made payable to: Lutheran Disaster Response and write “Nepal Area Earthquake” in the memo line. You can include this in today’s offering plate or mail directly to Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, ELCA Gifts Processing Center, PO Box 1809, Merrifield, VA 22116-8009.

Assistance Coordinator Calvary Administration Office processes over 100 request from the community each year for financial assistance. Some of that assistance includes rent or mortgage help to keep people in their homes or utility shut off assistance, along with referrals for food or other needs. If you would like to learn about this ministry, let us know! Some computer skills 2-4 hours per week and a compassionate heart are the necessary tools. Staff Contact: Deborah Robitaille

Capital Appeal and Facility Development Updates

This past week has been a very busy one for our Capital Appeal and Facility Development teams in preparation for our combined fall 40 days spiritual growth journey and capital fund campaign to extend our mission and enhance our facilities. Our Kairos consultant Jeff Kjellberg was in town for an intensive set of meetings with our leaders last week and will return again in early June.

Various capital appeal teams are forming right now and there are many opportunities to be involved in this very important ministry working with our Kairos consultant and leaders to develop and implement the fall capital appeal. If you are excited about Calvary's mission and want to help our ministry grow into the future please consider serving with one of the teams: administration, spiritual life, children and youth, lead gifts, events, ambassadors or communication. See capital appeal leaders Chris Cortez or Rick Tyler, or staff Deborah Robitaille or Pastor Jonathan for more information.

The Facility Development Team has interviewed and selected an Stephen Auger & Associates, Architects, Inc. to work with to develop the plans for expansion and renovation of our Clarkston Campus. The team is eager to get started with this process and looking forward to working with this architectural firm due to their experience working with churches and great interest in partnering with us in this project.

Men’s Softball Opening Day is Tuesday, May 5, 7:30 pm at New Hope Bible Church for our Men’s Softball team. If you would like to be a part of this church ministry, please fill out an InTouch card and let us know. We will be posting the game schedule weekly. Ministry Leader: Rick Tyler
