LAST MONTH IN REVIEW

Welcome home, LEAD Scholars!

The start to every successful college school year is Move-In day, and creating a home away from home! Students lugging plastic crates twice

their size and tearful goodbyes from families

dotted the campus, ending summer but beginning a

new life chapter! So, where will this year take you?

For many, this summer was composed of memorable vacations, part time jobs, lazy Saturdays and, for the unlucky amongst us, Summer classes. While most take the Summer season to relax and take a slightly slower

pace, some of our very own LEAD Scholars used their break from classes to make a real difference in the community. Once such LEAD Scholar is

Selena Houck. Selena is a second year Scholar who is also involved in the Burnett Honors College. This summer Houck had the amazing

opportunity to study abroad in Intabazwe, South Africa for a month. Selena completed sustainability work including working at an orphanage

where she introduced Kindle e-book Tablets to the youth. Houck also lead a dress distribution project, where young girls received new clothing

and dolls—some for the first time in their lives. Within the duration of her study abroad experience, Selena also participated in anti-poaching

efforts for rhinos, hiked through mountains and grasslands, and gained a new perspective on what a “summer break” really is. The work that

Selena did to increase the quality of life for the villagers in South Africa is truly inspiring!

MEET OUR FANTASTIC SPEAKERS

Who’s excited for Leadership Week coming up February 2017? Yes… we know that Leadership Week is pretty far from now (6 months, 1 semester, Winter Break and infinite mental break downs away, to be exact). However, we want you to start getting excited and knowledgeable about the events that will

take place starting NOW! One main way we will do this is by headlining the Keynote speakers who will be a part of Leadership Week, starting with:

Dr. Barbara Jenkins

Dr. Barbara Jenkins is the current superintendent for Orange County Public Schools. Jenkins, who was elected as

superintendent in 2012, has had an impressive career spanning over 25 years. In this position, Jenkins has assisted in receiving a large number of accomplishments for the district, including the

2014 Broad Prize for Urban Education, which earned half-a-million dollars for student scholarships. Additionally, the district received the Governors Sterling Award in 2014 and again in 2015.

Jenkins also served as president of the Florida Association of District School Superintendents for school year 2015-16.

Dr. Jenkins has also accomplished a variety of personal feats, including being named the Visionary Award recipient by the Girl

Scouts of Citrus Council, as well as being the Central Florida Woman of the Year by the Women’s Executive Council in 2014. In

addition, Dr. Barbara Jenkins been recognized by both the Orlando Sentinel and Orlando Magazine as one of the 10 most

powerful people in Central Florida. In 2015, the Orlando Magazine ranked her number five in 2015, and the Orlando

Business Journal honored her as CEO of the Year.

Jenkins is also very involved in the community in organizations such as The United Arts of Central Florida, Winter Park Health Foundation, Economic Development Commission, Central Florida Regional

Commission on Homelessness, and Orange County Youth Mental Health Commission.

Keep this uber successful Leadership Week speaker in mind, especially Scholars who are education majors! Her advice and advisement is an invaluable asset!

Stay tuned for more updated on Leadership Week 2017, where we will showcase…

REEL RETREAT

SEPTEMBER EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

SEE YOU NEXT MONTH!

Fall Semester is officially in full swing, and the race for finding the cheapest textbooks, assembling study groups

and attempting all-nighters has officially begun. However, it’s never too late to take a look back at the summer, or as I like to call it, “The season with less stress”. Many 1st year

LEAD Scholars concluded their summer break at the REEL Retreat, an amazing “glamping” trip which gave LEAD Scholars the opportunity to come together. Put on by a

group of spectacular REEL Counselors, REEL Retreat was two days of non-stop bonding, learning and engaging

activities. Faith Burns, LEB Director, discussed REEL’s impact on her first year as a scholar. “This was my second

year going to REEL Retreat. The first year I went I was nervous and I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but going to the Retreat really made me more comfortable with LEAD and, most importantly, made me aware of the

sense community that exists within the LEAD Scholars Academy." All around, REEL Retreat was an opportunity for personal and social growth, and has forged an unbreakable

bond between a new group of leaders!
