    Under the agreement, SSUSA ran the tournaments and LVSSA suppliedfield workers and helped with registering teams at the tournament.

    Negotiations to resolve remaining issues are ongoing, according toSSUSA officials.

    All 2020 Winners & 2019 TOC Qualifiers Invitedto 2021 Original TOC

    POLK COUNTY, Fla. - The Crown Jewel of Senior Softball, the originalTournament of Champions, enters its 15th year here in 2021 - pitting thebest of the best on the softball diamonds.

    Due to the current pandemic, the 2021 original Tournament ofChampions will have a bit of a different feel to it.

    Teams winning ANY qualifier during the 2020 season, not just TOCspecific qualifiers, will be invited. The invitations will also be extended toteams that qualified for the TOC in 2019.

    Invitations will be emailed to managers in the next couple of weeks.

    Teams that qualified in 2019 may come to the 2021 TOC, as long as theyhave at least six players from their original qualifying team.

    The annual banquet will be for managers and a guest this year. Because of the pandemic, the banquet is limited to 300 people, downfrom the normal 1,500 person banquet for all teams, players and theirfamilies. The reason is the requirement that tables be socially distanced,due to limits on indoor dining.

    The SSUSA original Tournament of Champions remains the premiersenior softball event of the year with free rings for winners (fromJostens), bats for MVPs, gift bags for managers, and marquee events

    recovering, according to theircoaches.

    SSUSA sent the survey to all315 team managers whocompeted in the first threesessions of the Worlds and121 teams responded. Of theteams that reported noCOVID cases, most said thatat least some players weretested after they returnedfrom the tournament and allreported negative results(206 total negative tests).

    The other managers saidthey were not sure how manyof their players were tested,but they had no reports ofany players developingsymptoms. No umpires orofficials have reportedsymptoms or testing positive.

    Almost 10,000 players andspectators attended the firstthree sessions of the WorldChampionships.

    SSUSA waited until last week-- two weeks from the end ofthe third WorldChampionships session – toemail out the survey toensure that anyone infectedwith the virus had developedsymptoms.

    The fourth and final WorldChampionships session, with109 teams, will be played inthe Phoenix area from Oct.29 - Nov. 1. The Las VegasSenior Softball Associationhad offered fields they hadreserved in Bullhead City,unfortunately there were notenough fields available thereto handle the 109 teams.

    Senior Softball-USA wasrecently informed of thepassing of Eddie Gonzalez,53, of El Paso, Tex. Gonzalezdied earlier this year on May8 due to COVID-19.

    Gonzalez began playingSSUSA in 2018 as a memberof El Paso Angels 50. Hemost recently played in the2019 Winter WorldChampionships (2020 rosterevent) last November.

    The LS Warriors will be in action against the TOC All-Stars on Saturday,January 23.

    Social Security Benefits Increase in 2021By Jack Sirard

    Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits forapproximately 70 million Americans will increase 1.3 percent in 2021, theSocial Security Administration reports.

    The average retiree will get an increase of about $20 a month.

    The 1.3 percent cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will begin with benefitspayable to more than 64 million Social Security beneficiaries in January2021.

    Increased payments to more than 8 million SSI beneficiaries will beginon Dec. 31, 2020. Some people receive both Social Security and SSIbenefits.

    The Social Security Act ties the annual COLA to the increase in theConsumer Price Index as determined by the Department of Labor’sBureau of Labor Statistics.

    Other adjustments that take effect in January of each year are based onthe increase in average wages. Based on that increase, the maximumamount of earnings subject to the Social Security tax will increase to$142,800 from $137,700.

    Olney, Maryland died on Oct.6.

    Wimbrough was a long-timemember of Superior SeniorSoftball, playing on the 55,60 and 65 teams. He earnedmultiple All-Tournamentselections with the team.

    Along with All-Tournamenthonors in SSUSA,Wimbrough earned variousAll-American honors inSoftball Players Association.

    “Ray Wimbrough was one ofthe most liked players inSenior Softball,” said JimSears, manager of SuperiorSenior Softball. “He was oneof the best pitchers I haveever seen and one greatfriend! He loved the gameand his teammates. He willbe dearly missed by all thatknew him.”

    For his efforts on thediamond, Wimbrough waselected into the NationalSenior Softball Hall of Famein the Player Category aspart of the Class of 2012.

    Tom Dommel (NSSHOF ’97)had this to say of Wimbroughat the time of his NSSHOFinduction: "I believe Ray isone of the best seniorpitchers in the country. He'sa crafty, experienced pitcherwho has been participating inslow pitch softball for 41years. His pitch selection,accuracy and control, as wellas his style of pitching havebeen contributing factors tohis team's victories. Hisreflexes and competitivenessenable him to shut down themiddle, making him a doublethreat in the circle."

    Ralph Adams, 69, ofIndianapolis, died on Oct. 10.

    Adams was a long-timemember of BrickyardClassics 60. He also playedwith Job Central.com/Indy60s, and Expert Car Care 55.

    Adams last played SSUSA in2019 with KPI.

    “Ralph was my dear friend forover 30 years,” said NancyAllen, SSUSA Indiana statedirector. “He was also agreat teammate. Anyonewho knew him will miss himdearly. I remember manytimes talking with him andsolving the world’s problemsat our beloved MetroStadium. Rest in peace; Icount myself fortunate tohave had you as my friend,Ralphie.”

    Adams entered the UnitedStates Air Force at age 19,and served 24 years, retiringin 1995. He worked for theState of Indiana in theDivision of Supplier Diversityas the Deputy Director ofCertification.

    Robert (Bob) L. Lowery

    Bob Lowery, 82, died on Oct.10 in Mesa, Ariz.

    Formerly of Citrus Heights,Calif., Lowery played for anumber of years with SacBlues 70, last playing in2014. He also played withSacramento Gold 75 in 2013.

    Additionally, Lowery servedas a long-time tournamentdirector for the TournamentPlayers Association (TPA) inSacramento.

    “Bob was the manager of theSacramento Blues for manyyears,” said Jerry Johnson,current manager of SacBlues 75. “First as the 65sand over, he then created theBlues 70 and over andmanaged them for severalyears. He was not only adirector for TPA, but waspresident for over five years.Bob was the heart and soulof the Blues teams for manyyears. I know, as he was myfirst senior softball managerwhen he brought me on tothe Blues.”

    William Lenox Beshore

    Bill Beshore, 82, ofBurlingame, Calif., died onSept. 29.

    Beshore was most recently amember of Redwood CityGod Rush, last playing in2019. He was also a memberof State Roofing Systems 70and 75.

    Beshore was a graduate ofDartmouth College, where heplayed football andbasketball.

Heplayed on many tournamentteams over the years,including the Redwood CityCardinals, the State RoofingRoyals, and the RedwoodCity Gold Rush. His gifts as aplayer—strong bat, powerfularm, fast runner with stamina—made him a coveted playerfor any team. Once he agedenough to be on teams withan infielder up the middle, heplayed that role with verveand became the mostvaluable player for the manydouble plays he would turn ina game.”

    Juan Roberto “Kiro”Oaxaca

    Juan Oaxaca, 73, of El Paso,Tex., died on Aug. 8.

    In SSUSA, Oaxaca was along-time member of El PasoNine Elevens, playing on the55, 60, 65, and 70 teams. Hemost recently played in theWinter World Championshipslast November.

    He also played with El PasoLegends in the early 2000’sin the 50s division.

    Oaxaca graduated from theUniversity of Texas El Paso,with a degree in business,before moving on to lawschool at the University ofTexas Austin. He also servedin the U.S. Army.

    Oaxaca established his ownlaw practice with severaloffices in El Paso andHouston. He would later jointhe law office ofScherr/Legate and continuedto practice until medicalcomplications led to hisretirement.
