Welcome to Bishop’s Stortford College Senior SchoolFrom the moment your child joins us at the age of 13, he or she will be welcomed into a kind and caring community with traditional values. Manners matter to us, and relationships here are characterised by warmth, mutual respect and a sense of fun.

Naturally, we will stretch and challenge your child to ensure he or she achieves the best academic grades possible. However, to realise full academic potential your child must also be happy and fulfi lled, comfortable in his or her skin.

That’s why we monitor your child’s wellbeing and personal development just as much as his or her academic progress; the two are inextricably linked. We also encourage your child to partake in a wide array of activities beyond the classroom: the confi dence that comes from discovering and developing new talents and interests is another essential ingredient for success.

We hope you will come and visit us, to see whether Bishop’s Stortford College Senior School is the right environment for your child to spend his or her formative teenage years.

Hannah joined the College at the age of thirteen as a day pupil. The main reason I chose to travel from Enfield every day was because it’s so welcoming and I felt it would be easy to settle and define myself. I was also looking for good Art and Drama which the College has. The exam results are good and the campus is beautiful. The relationship with teachers is more personal here. You can talk to them like you can talk to your friends. They try to understand you and to develop on that. There is so much to do. The sense of belonging is special as well. Being part of a House was a new experience for me. It means there is always somewhere to chill…and your Housemistress looks after you as well as your tutor. The competitiveness between the Houses is great. We all love each other though!

Building Confidence for life

The heart of the communityWhen your child joins the Senior School he or she will be allocated to one of nine single-sex Houses. College Houses are the beating heart of the community and will be a central part of your child’s life, offering a base and, in the case of boarders, a home.

Your child’s House is the College equivalent of his or her family. Here your son or daughter will find an immense and valuable support network comprising other pupils and staff. It is in his or her House that your son or daughter will often be best known, forming lifelong friendships and receiving unstinting support. In addition to a Housemaster / mistress (Day Houses) or Houseparents (Boarding Houses) responsible for general welfare, your child will have a House-based academic Tutor who monitors progress.

Each House has its own personality and identity, and each engenders tremendous loyalty. You only have to witness the impassioned cheering at House Music and other inter-house competitions to sense the strong bonds that are formed. It is no surprise that the Houses are consistently cited by departing Sixth Formers as what they will miss most. The instant sense of belonging your child’s House provides is a considerable part of what makes the College community so special.

As a boarder your child’s House will take on even greater significance. Just as each Boarding House has its own beloved traditions, so each one also has a tried and tested approach to ensuring that their charges settle in quickly and feel cared for and valued from the outset. However they achieve it, all Houses share a common philosophy of making certain that your child feels at home and part of the family.

Our daughter has settled in really well, which is mainly down to the Housemistress who really made her focus and realise what she needed to do Parent of girl, WB, Fourth Form

I’m impressed that the staff are so caring and encouraging Parent of day boy, Fourth Form

In your first year in the Senior School, you don’t understand why everyone else is getting so excited about the House Music Competition and rehearsing really hard for it. Then on the night the atmosphere is electric and suddenly you get it. It’s fantastic Sarah, new pupil

Building Confidence for life

Confidence is an essential ingredient for success, both at school and for later life. That’s why we don’t rest until we have helped your child discover what he or she is good at, and enabled him or her to develop those talents.

In addition to opportunities for sport, music, visual art and drama, your child will be able to choose from many options in our highly regarded activity programme. We want your child to be able to pursue as many passions as possible and to leave us with self-belief and a greatly expanded horizon.

Will it be textiles, Japanese or astronomy that most appeals? Will your child opt for scuba diving, archaeology, or cookery? Perhaps bridge or badminton will be the activity that ignites a spark. Maybe one of the clubs and societies or the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme will be your son or daughter’s place to shine...

Broadening horizons, building confidence

We were impressed by how welcoming the school has been, and how well she has settled in. The other girls in the hockey team have taken her under their wings, so she has lots of friends there Parent of girl, WB, L5

Smooth transitionsOne of the many advantages of being a through-school is the continuity between the different sections of the College. During the Fourth and Fifth Form years your child will have the opportunity to sample widely from the curriculum in its broadest sense. As your son or daughter approaches Sixth Form, we give him or her considerable help in defining a more specialist direction for that crucial next stage. We strive for a balance between continuity and familiarity whilst introducing exciting new features.

In such a short time she has changed as an individual, academically, and also with her sports. She seems to have upped her game and engaged more Parent of day girl, Fourth Form
